Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to investigate the level of awareness and use of Web 2.0 tools by librarians in university libraries in Nigeria.

Design/methodology/approach

A questionnaire was used to collect data from 176 librarians in 49 university libraries in Nigeria.

Findings

It emerged that the librarians were more familiar with social networking sites, instant messaging, media sharing sites, blogs and wikis. The popularity of these Web 2.0 tools made them the most frequently used by the librarians. Web 2.0 tools like Flickr, RSS feeds, podcasts, social bookmarking, were among the least used. The study revealed that librarians use Web 2.0 tools mostly for reference services online, library news/events, training resources, and image and video sharing. Lack of facilities such as computers with internet access, lack of skills, and lack of time were indicated as some of the barriers in the use of Web 2.0 tools by librarians in university libraries in Nigeria.

Practical implications

These research results can be consulted by interested librarians as they plan to implement Web 2.0 applications in their libraries.

Originality/value

This study draws an overall picture of Web 2.0 applications in Nigerian university libraries and attempts to provide helpful information to better understand how librarians elsewhere are utilizing Web 2.0 technologies in rendering library services.

Abstract

Purpose

To set out internationally accepted definitions of information literacy and examine them in the Nigerian context.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper takes an initially theoretical and expository approach by setting out definitions of information literacy (IL) and contrasting other different but related concepts, such as ICT literacy, before going on to cite documented theory and practice in a variety of countries. After this, comparisons are drawn between such external standards of IL practice and prevalent approaches to information literacy acquisition in Nigeria as documented by authors and as experienced in practice.

Findings

There are important parallels in IL theory and practice between Nigeria and other countries with well‐established IL traditions, but factors such as economic instability, under‐resourcing and computer (ICT) illiteracy inhibit the full development of IL programmes.

Practical implications

The paper outlines clear steps that need to be taken to advance IL standards in Nigeria.

Originality/value

The paper offers insight into the national IL situation in Nigeria, formulates a relevant set of IL statements, and puts Nigerian practice into an international context.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the opinions and attributes about Nigerian women librarians breaking the glass ceiling that prevents them from reaching management positions in their respective libraries.

Design/methodology/approach

Descriptive survey research design was used for the study. Questionnaire was used as the instrument of data collection. The population of the study was 147 librarians at the university libraries of the six federal universities in South-west, Nigeria. Purposive and census sampling techniques were used for the study.

Findings

It was found that the opinions about women librarians occupying management positions in the libraries are negative. Women librarians do not have the required attributes and capability for management positions despite the fact that the extent of their preparedness for management positions is high. The study revealed that there is significant relationship between gender attributes and managerial capability.

Originality/value

It was recommended that there should be abandoning of organisational stereotype that characterises the opinions of librarians which make them think that women librarians are not fit for management positions. Women librarians should develop the attributes and capability that can qualify them for management positions in libraries.
