This study proposes targeted modernization of the Department of Defense (DoD's) Joint Forces Ammunition Logistics information system by implementing the optimized innovative information technology open architecture design and integrating Radio Frequency Identification Device data technologies and real-time optimization and control mechanisms as the critical technology components of the solution. The innovative information technology, which pursues the focused logistics, will be deployed in 36 months at the estimated cost of $568 million in constant dollars. We estimate that the Systems, Applications, Products (SAP)-based enterprise integration solution that the Army currently pursues will cost another $1.5 billion through the year 2014; however, it is unlikely to deliver the intended technical capabilities.

The shipbreaking sector in Bangladesh has spurred extensive academic and policy debates on relations between shipbreaking industries, environmental degradation and the health security of their workers. As shipbreaking is an economically significant industry in Bangladesh, it needs to implement both domestic and global mechanisms for environmental conservation and the protection of the labourers’ health from environmental risks. The purpose of this paper is to primarily explore the environmental and health security issues in shipbreaking activities in Bangladesh. It also identifies the challenges in implementing the rules and regulations for protecting the health of the workers at shipbreaking yards in Bangladesh and preserving the marine environment.

This is a qualitative paper based on secondary materials, including journal articles, books and national and international reports. It critically reviews the existing literature, rules, regulations and policing on shipbreaking with a particular focus on the environment and health security of the workers.

This paper finds that the implementation of the rules and regulations in shipbreaking in Bangladesh is complicated because of weak implementation mechanisms, political and economic interests of the yard owners, lack of coordination among different agencies, lack of adequate training and awareness among the workers and workers’ poor economic condition, which contribute to the degradation of marine and local environments and trigger health hazards among the workers. Therefore, degrading the environment and undermining occupational health and safety regulations have become regular; thus, accidental death and injury to the workers are common in this sector.

This paper is an important study on the issues of workers' health and safety and environmental hazards in the shipyard. It reports how the health security of the workers in shipbreaking yards in Bangladesh is vulnerable, and environmental rules are challenged. Finally, this paper frames some policy implications to safeguard the workers’ health rights and the marine environment.

Notes the recent increase in interstate shipments of hazardous materials, by road, in Malaysia following rapid expansion in the manufacturing sector. Although there has been no major accident involving transportation of hazardous materials, the high rate of road accidents has raised great concerns concerning motor vehicles carrying hazardous goods and petroleum products. Determines the emergency preparedness and response plans of the transportation companies. Data were obtained from management and drivers, and the results revealed that the companies did not have a proper management system of safe transportation, had inadequate training of personnel, and the transport vehicles were not provided with appropriate tools and equipment for emergency response during mishaps. The drivers lacked general awareness and principal knowledge of hazardous material emergency response. Suggests that there is an urgent need to stipulate legal requirements for hazardous material transportation in Malaysia.

Purpose – The purpose of the paper is to show that environmental management integration to a small Estonian enterprise which main activities are freightage services and vehicles' maintenance and repair works, implementing a visual, simple and practical tool – Eco‐mapping. Design/methodology/approach – The paper shows that Eco‐mapping is a practical, visual and easy‐to‐use toolbox, which gets employees, involved in good environmental practice. It is the first step towards integrating environmental considerations into the day‐to‐day activities of small SMEs. Eco‐mapping is a step‐by‐step process to gather useful information and to immediately trigger environmental action. In total, 80 percent of environmental information is location‐based. There are ten basic steps, which identify environmental aspects, significance of the problems, environmental targets and an action programme of the considered field. Findings – The findings in this paper show the implementation steps of Eco‐mapping tool into the small Estonian company. During the case study all hazardous impacts on human health and environment have been evaluated and the workers awareness was raised. Practical implications – The paper shows that after the overall analysis the company has received clear picture of the problem areas. The most worrying was connected to material storage handling that might had heavy influence to environment as well as to health and safety in particular leakages, risk of explosion, health hazard, emissions. The preventive measures that can be easily taken may decrease these risks in many times. They are the following: fire system integration; electrical system approval; correct utilization of hazardous wastes; and legal issue studying. Originality/value – The paper presents the practical example of implementation of the Eco‐mapping tool in one small Estonian company. This paper gives an overview of the implementation process, describes the main concerns and suggests possible solutions. The project helps managers and other workers to understand that careful relation to the environment might be favorable from an economic point of view, as compliance with regulation and preparing sustainable principles for future generations.
