Abstract
For more than 30 years Goodyear has been a leader in solvent paint resin technology for the building sector, with the Pliolite range of resins. Today however, the paint industry is moving into a new era of social awareness of the environment. Goodyear, determined to maintain their lead by bringing new technology to the industry, is now in a position to announce the first of the new Plioway range of acrylic copolymer resins soluble in low odour, “aromatic free” solvents. The principal idea behind the development program of Plioway resins is to obtain for the first time solubility in non‐aggressive, low toxicity solvents while maintaining the very highest level of performance associated with solvent paint systems.

Traditionally aerospace coatings have been formulated for performance. In an extreme case a faulty coating could contribute to an accident on a catastrophic scale. The demands on aerospace coatings are severe because aircraft have unusual requirements. These requirements are dictated by the environment in which modern aircraft operate, the nature of the structure of the airframe, the way they are painted and the way in which they are used. As a consequence of all this, the paints which have been formulated for aerospace use usually differ from paint used in other industrial areas. It has often meant using ingredients which are regarded as hazardous either to health, such as chromate pigments, or to the environment, such as large quantities of strong solvents. Bearing this in mind, modern formulations have had to evolve, improving performance and taking into account the results of using hazardous ingredients which might affect users of the coatings, innocent bystanders and the environment. Here we consider the conflict between these influences and show the position reached within the industry.

Safety and the environment are the two areas to which Volvo will be giving top priority in future development work. By introducing water‐borne metallic paint the discharge of solvents will be substantially reduced. In conjunction with other measures this will help to improve the environment as a whole and enable the company to adapt itself more effectively to increasingly stringent environmental requirements.

Making Fine Powders ‐ Extremely fine and uniform particles, of 5–50 nanometers, have been produced by a process being developed at Battelle Pacific Northwest Laboratories. Researchers have used the technique to synthesize new, highly dispersed catalysts with a high surface area. It offers a way to make other products which have improved properties: ceramic ball bearings and gears which are stronger and more durable than those available today, and pigments for paints and inks.

Changes in regulations aiming at reducing the impact that technologies such as coatings, adhesives, cleaners have on the environment is leading to large advances in these end‐use technologies. In achieving the required quality of the end product, and irrespective of whether this is in areas such as high solids paints or water‐based coatings, solvents keep on playing an important role. At the same time different requirements are set for the solvents employed. The changing role of solvents and the technological benefits solvents are bringing are discussed. It is shown that the computer programme BLENDPRO is an effective reformulation tool which assists in the efficient development of new formulations in these areas.

Correct selection of the resin is therefore of fundamental importance if long‐lasting protection is to be provided against corrosive elements. Among the paint resins that are well established, chlorinated rubber is now being used to an increasing extent because it meets the essential requirements for anti‐corrosion protection.
