Abstract

This chapter examines the relationship between team routines and temporal entrainment. While the process of entrainment generally reinforces the routines that teams follow temporal entrainment also creates opportunities for externally focused teams to change their routines. Entrainment creates team rhythms that include pauses in activity that can act as triggers to change. These pauses alone are not enough to impel teams to change; managers must also employ temporal design to make use of these opportunities for change. Both the rhythms of temporal entrainment and the pauses that accompany them are part of a team’s task environment. By uncovering key rhythms, as well as by managing the pauses, managers can both reinforce desired routines and change problematic ones.

Abstract

Purpose

To provide ways of how organizations can benefit from entrainment, the purpose of this paper is to create a better theoretically grounded understanding of entrainment in organizations by reviewing the literature, describing managerial implications and identifying future research directions.

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic literature review of relevant literature based on peer-reviewed research papers published in highly ranked scientific journals.

Findings

It provides a clear understanding as to what constitutes entrainment in organizations and emphasizes its complexity. Further, six benefits of entrainment are highlighted, including the positive relationship between entrainment and organizational outcomes. The review may also provide entrepreneurs and practitioners a scientific basis for developing innovative tools to help managers’ foster entrainment in organizations.

Research limitations/implications

The review indicates that entrainment plays a much larger role in organizations than we think. Change leaders' actions may impact the emotions and actions of change recipients through entrainment. The selected keywords used in the search and the researcher's bias of including or excluding articles for this review are the major research limitations.

Originality/value

It is one of the first papers, to our knowledge, to provide a structured overview and understanding of the entrainment phenomenon in an organizational context, based on 41 peer-reviewed articles.

Abstract

Purpose

Digitally oriented firms are faced with new opportunities and risks in today’s ever-changing world. Drawing upon organisational entrainment theory, this study investigates how supply chain (SC) entrainment improves the effects of digital orientation on firm performance through absorbing risks and exploiting opportunities.

Design/methodology/approach

Survey data were collected from 307 Chinese manufactures and analysed using structural equation modelling and regression analysis.

Findings

The results show digital orientation absorbs risk through evoking three SC entrainment dimensions (i.e. internal entrainment, entrainment with customers and entrainment with suppliers). Entrainment with customers and suppliers mediate the relationship between internal entrainment and firm performance. An opportunity exploitation mechanism is evidenced by the moderating effects of internal and external entrainment on the relationship between digital orientation and firm performance.

Practical implications

The empirical findings provide timely insights for managers to fully harness the benefits of digital orientation by using SC entrainment, i.e. to match the tempo and pace of internal and external cyclical activities to reduce the risks and increase the benefits of adopting advanced digital technologies. The authors show managers how to adjust their organization’s actions to keep tempo and synchronous phase with their SC partners.

Originality/value

The study introduces and conceptualizes a construct (i.e. SC entrainment) to understand how risks and opportunities arising from digital transformation can be addressed to maximize the value of advanced digital technologies.

Abstract

Entrainment is a theory of causality wherein different but proximate actants are tied to one another in complementary rhythms. Entrainment proposes a naturalism of interrelatedness. Manuel DeLanda has explored the logic of social entrainment. Opposing assumptions are found in Actor Network Theory. ANT merges the sociology of knowledge and an analysis of power into a theory of pragmatic causality. Social causality is in ANT (micro‐) politically constructed. The goal of this paper is to examine entrainment as a generative theory of social construction wherein linkages of ideas, persons, actions, events and objects, unlike in ANT's translation are not saturated by (principles of) social power. Illustrations of how entrainment and ANT hold up in practice are provided.

Abstract

Purpose

The dent is one of typical surface defects on the surfaces of the machine elements and it is not in fact inerratic. This work aims to investigate the effect of a single dent with a marginal bump on the film shape in elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) point contacts.

Design/methodology/approach

The experimental investigations of a single dent with marginal bump were carried out using multi-beam interferometry in EHL point contacts. In the meantime, its numerical simulation was also finished using multi-level method and multilevel multi-integration method. The effects of the entrainment velocity and the applied load as well as the slide-roll ratio on the film were chiefly discussed. Meanwhile, the comparison of films between smooth and dented surfaces was conducted under simple sliding conditions.

Findings

Under pure sliding conditions, the minimum film thickness presents itself near the marginal bump at lower entrainment velocity. The inlet dimple before the marginal bump is subjected to the operating conditions. Under pure rolling conditions, the shape of the dent is almost unchanged when it is passing through the contact region at lower entrainment velocity. The dent depth hardly depends on the applied load under static conditions. However, larger load enhances the inlet dimple and the elastic deformation of the dent with the marginal bump under pure sliding conditions.

Originality/value

This work is helpful to understanding the effect of the marginal bump before the single dent on point contact EHL films.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to describe and observe the influence of boundary slip associated with an arbitrary entrainment angle on the contact lubrication properties of ellipses.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the modified Reynolds equation, the boundary slip of any angle is considered in the elliptic contact, and numerical simulation is carried out. In the above calculation, the progressive mesh densification method is used, which greatly reduces the computation time.

Findings

The results indicate that the variation of film thickness corresponding to different entrainment angles is distinct from those without considering boundary slip. In addition, boundary slip reduces the central film thickness and minimum film thickness, which makes the hydrodynamic pressure distribution smoother.

Originality/value

The present study focuses on the specific condition with the arbitrary direction of rolling and sliding velocity found in hypoid gears and worm, and some other components. The influence of boundary slip associated with arbitrary entrainment angle on the lubrication film thickness in elliptical contacts is first revealed, which improves a good understanding of elastohydrodynamic lubrication characteristics.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this work is to improve the air entrainment capacity of a concrete by using fine mineral admixtures such as fly ash (FA) and silica fume (SF) as cement substitute, and coal bottom ash (CBA) as fine aggregate substitute. Air entrainment capacity has been studied indirectly as a measure of heat resistance of concrete. Literature has suggested that mineral admixtures improve the air absorption in the paste component of the concrete, on the one hand, whereas they perform pore and grain size refinement, on the other, thereby reducing the air entrainment. CBA, which being porous, creates the possibility of air adsorption by the aggregate component. Therefore, the study finds out whether a double benefit of adding both of these materials will be achieved, or CBA will try to improve the deficiency in the air entrainment created by the mineral admixtures.

Design/methodology/approach

Air-entrained concrete (AEC) mixes were constituted in three groups. First group represents mixes with natural fine aggregates only, and second with 25% fine aggregates substituted by CBA. Progressively, the third group has 50% fine aggregates substituted with CBA. In all the three groups, cement was substituted with FA and SF @ 0%, 20% and 40%, and 0%, 5% and 10%, respectively, thereby creating four binary and four ternary mixes corresponding to each group. Compressive and flexural strength tests were conducted at 28 days on the concrete mixes pre and post high-temperature heat treatment, i.e. 100°C, 200°C and 400°C, respectively. This study also examines the microstructure characteristics of AEC after 14 days of curing via X-ray diffraction. Sorptivity test was also conducted to estimate the capillary and air-entrained voids in concrete.

Findings

It was found that a concrete mix containing 20% FA and 10% SF along with 50% CBA could give similar post-heated strength to a normal (without mineral admixtures) AEC. In AECs where only CBA is present and cement paste is not substituted, both of the pre- and post-heated strengths of concrete reduce. Also, some mixtures containing large amounts of mineral admixtures in concrete with nil CBA show a high reduction in post-heated strength though they show good pre-heated strength. Therefore, mineral admixtures and CBA complement each other in improving the post-heated strength. Air pore structure found from sorptivity test also verifies these results.

Originality/value

AEC is very helpful for insulation of buildings during summer season by absorbing heat waves. AEC containing FA and CBA reduces carbon footprint because of substitution of cement and it also helps to conserve natural resources by the use of CBA in place of fine aggregates.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the cross-sectional reshaping in transitioning/starting rectangular jets of aspect ratio 2 under various inlet perturbation conditions at the Reynolds number of Re = UDh/v = 17,750.

Design/methodology/approach

Large eddy simulation results compared with the phase-locked particle image velocimetry data exhibit the cross-sectional jet deformations from rectangular to rounder shapes. Inflow velocity oscillations are introduced at the fundamental frequency associated with the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability characterized by the spectral analysis of the hotwire data and the linear stability predictions.

Findings

The initially rectangular cross-section of the jet reshapes into the rounder geometries with increased downstream distance while the edges of the jet become distorted due to the shear layer instability more significantly observed near the high curvature corners. The different expansion rates in the longer and shorter edges of the jet and the consequent cross-sectional reshaping are found to be sensitive to small levels of random inlet perturbations. In addition, introducing controlled sinusoidal oscillations results in the formation of more organized trailing shear layer where the stronger vortex rings go through the curvature-induced deformations.

Originality/value

Spatio-temporal study of vortex dynamics in transitioning rectangular jets reveals important information about the effect of the controlled jet forcing on local entrainment. Dynamics of the leading vortex dominates the entrainment in transitioning jets which are commonly used in practical applications. Near-field entrainment is also promoted proportional to the amplitude of the controlled inlet oscillations within the trailing vortex rings.

Abstract

Purpose

To address the effects of velocity profile at the discharge air grille (DAG) on the amount of entrained air into an open refrigerated display case (ORDC).

Design/methodology/approach

The performance of an ORDC was studied by CFD, DPIV and LDV. The actual measured velocity profile at the DAG and total flow rate of the display case at its nominal operating conditions are used as guidelines throughout the CFD modeling.

Findings

It was found that a skewed parabolic profile with the peak shifted towards the inner section of the case generates the minimum entrainment and demonstrates that with simple changes to the geometry of the DAG, a significant reduction in the entrainment rate could be achieved.

Research limitations/implications

This study finds the optimum infiltration rate of a manufactured ORDC. A fundamental study is currently being done to address all the effective parameters that can affect the infiltration rate of any ORDCs.

Originality/value

This paper presents this fact that the velocity profile at the DAG has a significant impact on the infiltration rate and electricity consumption of ORDCs. In turn, the velocity profile is dependent on the geometry and shape of the air passage before DAG. Thus, the analysis of the effect of the geometry on the velocity should seriously be taken into consideration by the case manufacturers.

Abstract

As part of the developing attention being paid to time in organization science, this chapter discusses two temporal dimensions – polychronicity and speed – and develops propositions relating these two temporal dimensions to other organization science variables. The propositions are specified according to levels of analysis, at least three of which are considered in propositions presented for each dimension. Two other temporal dimensions – punctuality and temporal depth – are also described, albeit not as extensively as polychronicity and speed. A fifth temporal phenomenon, entrainment, provides insights into organizational processes as well as the four temporal dimensions. The chapter concludes by outlining some reasons for caution for both theory and practice.
