Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research paper is to present a performance measurement system for enterprise networks (PMS‐EN) developed within the context of a European project's context.

Design/methodology/approach

This research follows a constructivist approach, based on the following activities: recompilation, analysis and study of scientific knowledge, acquisition of main postulates and construction of initial framework.

Findings

This paper describes a performance measurement system called PMS‐EN that can be used for managing performance in the enterprise networks context. After analysing different frameworks relating to such a thematic, and once their main weaknesses were identified, it was decided to develop a PMS that will overcome these difficulties and, at the same time, provide enterprises operating within these environments, with a simple, efficient, robust and useful framework.

Research limitations/implications

This PMS has been built upon the framework called PMS IE‐GIP, but thought could be given to building it upon other frameworks existing within the literature.

Practical implications

Even though this proposal has been successfully applied to an enterprises network, it should be tested further by implementing it to other enterprises networks, with the main objective of enriching and extending it to other sectors.

Originality/value

This paper has described a new performance measurement system called PMS‐EN that can be used for managing performance in the enterprise networks context. It provides enterprises operating in this context a simple, efficient, robust and useful framework. Additionally, it is an efficient and effective tool for creating, managing and monitoring performance measures, in an analytical and graphical way, at both global and individual levels of the enterprise networks, which is lacking in most of the existing frameworks.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research is to show that small or medium enterprises (SMEs) have significant impacts on supply chain performance. They may take the roles of suppliers, producers, distributors, and customers. In this paper large firms and SMEs are compared in terms of strategic and operational choices.

Design/methodology/approach

SMEs are classified on two dimensions – chain relationship position and strategic focus. Four types of SME characteristics are discussed: efficiency, coordination, collaboration, and innovation. Also presented are the five possible growth paths of SMEs, along with theoretical and managerial implications.

Findings

The theoretical contribution of this paper to the nature of SMEs and their supply chain relationships is threefold: the differences between large enterprises and SMEs have been examined in terms of key management practices; key characteristics of four types of SMEs have been identified in terms of their supply chain relationship position and strategic focus; and the transition paths that SMEs may follow in moving from one type to another have been shown. The models presented in this paper give an informed insight and understanding of the dynamic changes that can transform SMEs within their supply chain relationships.

Research limitations/implications

The growth paths that have been outlined for SMEs display diverse patterns. In view of the sheer numbers of SMEs that comprise the global economy, and their strategic roles as suppliers, component manufacturers, service providers, and distributors, their growth patterns may not be easily discernible over a short time period.

Practical implications

Managerial implications of the study include: SME executives may diagnose their current business position and strategically plan intended changes by enhancing their operational capabilities and chain relationship positions, in view of changing market realities; most importantly, they may strive to take practical steps to evolve from Efficiency SMEs all the way to Innovation SMEs. The road‐map presented in this paper may be helpful in benchmarking current operations and in planning future transitions. In this way, SME management may take practical steps to implement desirable growth paths through appropriate management practices that utilize appropriate intra‐ and inter‐organizational capabilities.

Originality/value

These SME growth patterns provide a useful framework for meaningful case studies that illustrate the potential for the dynamic transformation of SMEs.

Abstract

The concept of supply chain is about managing coordinated information and material flows, plant operations, and logistics. It provides flexibility and agility in responding to consumer demand shifts without cost overlays in resource utilization. The fundamental premise of this philosophy is; synchronization among multiple autonomous business entities represented in it. That is, improved coordination within and between various supplychain members. Increased coordination can lead to reduction in lead times and costs, alignment of interdependent decision‐making processes, and improvement in the overall performance of each member as well as the supply chain. Describes architecture to create the appropriate structure, install proper controls, and implement principles of optimization to synchronize the supply chain. A supplychain model based on a collaborative system approach is illustrated utilizing the example of the textile industry.

Abstract

Purpose

Despite the growing and widespread importance of exploring the primary factors facilitating global value chain (GVC) and supply chain management, this topic has received surprisingly little attention to date. Drawing upon the technology–organization–environment framework and the resource-based view, this study aims to fill these important gaps in the literature by theorizing and developing a comprehensive model to explain how a foreign subsidiary of multinational enterprises can improve the upgrading of the GVC and supply chain performance in a host market.

Design/methodology/approach

Using survey data collected from 266 foreign subsidiaries of multinational enterprises operating in the Chinese manufacturing sector, this study empirically examines the theoretical framework using a structural equation modeling approach.

Findings

The results demonstrated that the relative advantages of digital technology, supplier diversification and environmental uncertainty all contribute positively to the development of foreign subsidiaries’ supply chain management capabilities. Meanwhile, supply chain management capability plays a positive role in foreign subsidiaries facilitating GVC upgrading and enhancing supply chain performance.

Research limitations/implications

The findings of this study provide many important implications and useful insights to foreign subsidiaries operating in an emerging host market by concentrating on how to develop and maintain their competitive advantages in the process of GVC reshaping and supply chain restructuring.

Originality/value

This study provides a useful guide to help firms better understand how they may develop and enhance their competitive advantages in upgrading their GVCs and implementing supply chain restructuring. In addition, this research generates important policy implications considering the recent trend toward creating more effective and sustainable global supply value chains.

This study empirically investigates how ambidextrous innovations and their balancing affect the supply chain financing performance (SCFP) of small and medium-sized enterprises

Abstract

Purpose

This study empirically investigates how ambidextrous innovations and their balancing affect the supply chain financing performance (SCFP) of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), based on signaling theory. Moreover, this study explores the moderating effect of the breadth and depth of digital technology deployment on the relationship between ambidextrous innovations and the SCFP of SMEs.

Design/methodology/approach

A mixed-methods design is used, including a qualitative study and a quantitative study. Qualitative data have been collected from six multi-cases in different industries. Questionnaire data have been collected from 259 SMEs in China, and a multiple regression model is used to verify the research hypotheses.

Findings

The findings indicate that, in supply chain financing, both exploitative innovation and exploratory innovation are helpful in improving the SCFP of SMEs. For resource-constrained SMEs, a relative balance between exploitative innovation and exploratory innovation can help improve SCFP. The breadth of digital technology deployment can strengthen the relationship between exploitative innovation and SCFP, while the depth of digital technology deployment can weaken the relationship between exploratory innovation and SCFP. In addition, increasing the depth of digital technology deployment strengthens the positive correlation between the relative balance of ambidextrous innovations and SCFP.

Practical implications

To effectively obtain supply chain financing, SMEs can either concentrate their limited resources on a single type of innovation or use relative balance strategies to simultaneously pursue two innovations. In addition, in the process of obtaining supply chain financing by ambidextrous innovations, SMEs should appropriately deploy digital technologies.

Originality/value

This study first deconstructs the impact mechanism of ambidextrous innovation capabilities on SCFP based on signaling theory, and then discusses the balancing effect of ambidextrous innovations on SCFP in the cases of resource-constrained SMEs. This study also goes further and finds the negative moderating effect of digital technology deployment in the process of supply chain financing.
