Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the determinants of learners' satisfaction with a new blended learning method, namely online video presentations.

Design/methodology/approach

The study tests the proposed model using responses from 353 students who were exposed to the new method. Regression analysis was used to test the hypotheses.

Findings

The results show that both the perceived social (e.g. reduction in comparison bias) and utilitarian (e.g. presentation originality) benefits increase satisfaction with the online video presentation method, from both the creator's and the learner's perspectives.

Practical implications

This study provides several guidelines to instructors employing blended learning methods, as well as designers of platforms that enable blended learning.

Originality/value

This study provides a model to understand the determinants of learners' satisfaction with a new blended learning method. It looks at these determinants from both the content creators' perspective and the content viewer's perspective.

Abstract

Purpose

The importance of smartphones in enhancing students learning, research and development is well-established in many published studies. Nevertheless, due to numerous challenges, Nigerian students are yet to reap from the benefits of smartphones in terms of accessing vital information for learning and development. Therefore, this study aims to develop a framework that will enhance Nigerian students’ ability to use smartphones for learning.

Design/methodology/approach

The SERVQUAL Theory Framework is adapted to actualize the research aim. Moreover, a qualitative (in-depth interview) research approach was used to interview 60 students from 3 public universities in Nigeria. Purposive sampling technique was used to select the interviewees, and the interview data were analysed using thematic content analysis.

Findings

The findings identified the critical constraints that deter Nigerian students from reaping the full potential of smartphones for learning. The constraints are categorized into three groups which include telecommunication companies’ hiccups, such as high cost of internet, poor network services and coverage; government obstacles, such as high tax policies, insufficient electricity supply and lack of basic infrastructure; and university barriers, such as unavailability of Wi-Fi connection for students, lack of equipped university libraries and poor management.

Originality/value

Thus, a holistic Framework for Enhancing Students Smartphones Learning Ability was established to provide fundamental recommendations to the Nigerian Government, telecommunication companies in Nigeria and Nigerian universities to tackle the pressing issues hindering Nigerian students from using their smartphones for learning. This will enhance the smartphone learning experience of Nigerian students.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to determine employees' perception of the dimension of culture toward organizational learning readiness. The study also seeks to compare employees' work experience (longevity), work shifts and their perception toward the dimension of culture in enhancing organizational learning readiness.

Design/methodology/approach

A questionnaire was administered to 150 employees of a manufacturing enterprise. ANOVA was utilized to investigate the relationship between longevity, work shift, and perception toward the dimension of culture in enhancing organizational learning. To determine which of the work shifts had a significant relationship with the dependent variable employees' perception toward the dimension of culture in enhancing organizational learning, a posteriori contrasts were established.

Findings

The independent variables longevity and work shift were statistically significant, while the interaction effect was nonsignificant. Omega‐squared test statistic revealed longevity and work shift each accounted for 9 percent and 7 percent, respectively of the variance in the dependent variable employee perception toward the dimension of culture in enhancing organizational learning. Moderate effect sizes for independent variables longevity and work shift were also established.

Research limitations/implications

The application of the results of this study is limited to the one small business enterprise that participated in this study and cannot be generalized to other similar organizations. But the findings are important since they reveal that employees' work experience and work shifts make a difference when compared to the participants' perception toward the dimension of culture in enhancing organizational learning readiness of the small business enterprise studied.

Practical implications

Findings of this study show that it is important to determine the perceptions of employees toward the dimension of culture in enhancing organizational learning readiness. In addition, managers of this small business enterprise should find the results of this study useful in designing work shifts intended to promote organizational learning practices. Emphasis should be directed towards shift interface issues, knowledge dissemination, and evaluation.

Originality/value

Organizational learning has been well researched in large business enterprises. However, limited research in small business enterprises exists. This study set out to determine the employees' perception of the dimension of culture in enhancing learning readiness in a small business enterprise.

Abstract

This chapter synthesizes findings from the reviews of education using Web 2.0, social networking, mobile learning, and virtual worlds, in light of the earlier chapters on context, technology, pedagogy, content, and design. Benefits and issues associated technology-enhanced learning are generalized, with an important finding being the quite different ways that different technologies contribute to each. Twenty technology-enhanced learning design principles are derived from abstracting the Web 2.0, social networking, mobile learning, and virtual worlds literature. The benefits, issues, and technology-enhanced learning design principles are then related to one another by virtue of 13 clusters of concerns, namely pedagogy, access, communication, content representation, collaboration, motivation and engagement, vicarious learning and reflection, digital learning capabilities, assessment and feedback, student-centered learning, learning communities, protecting students, and teacher support. The analysis enables the general learning technology literature to be linked to concrete examples and evidential sources, so that educators and researchers can construct a deep and connected understanding of technology-enhanced learning design.

In this chapter, we discuss the use of technology to enhance learning for students with physical disabilities and other health impairments. In recent years, there has been significant growth in numbers, diversity, and academic orientation of persons with physical disabilities and other health impairments; therefore, it is incumbent on special educators to adopt and use appropriate emerging innovative technology to enhance student learning. Impactful laws (Americans with Disabilities Act [ADA], Every Student Succeeds Act, Individuals with Disability Education Act, and Title II of ADA) provide impetus for advancing the policies on the use of technology by students with physical disabilities and other health impairments in the United States. The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Standards also guide the development of educators' digital literacies and pedagogical practices that will harness technology for student learning. This chapter is organized around the ISTE Standards, US Department of Education policies, and the use of technology to aid students with physical disabilities and other health impairments.

Abstract

Purpose

In spite of the active role of continuous learning on improving organisational performance, the construction industry generally and architectural design firms (ADFs) in particular are criticised for their inability to use organisational knowledge to foster learning culture towards enhancing their performance. This paper aims to develop a framework based on knowledge management (KM) to enhance the learning culture in ADFs in developing countries.

Design/methodology/approach

To achieve the abovementioned aim, a research methodology consisted of data collection, data analysis and action required is designed to achieve four objectives. First, to examine the nature of the construction industry in developing countries, learning culture in ADFs, as well as knowledge and KM; second, to present three case studies to investigate the effectiveness of KM in enhancing the learning culture in ADFs; third, to investigate the perception and application of KM towards enhancing the learning culture in ADFs in Egypt, finally to develop a KM based framework to enhance the learning culture in ADFs in developing countries.

Findings

Through literature review, the research highlighted the fragmented nature of the architectural design process, which led to the loss of valuable information and made the process of capturing and sharing knowledge a hard task. In addition, it identified the barriers of implementing KM and the building blocks of learning culture in ADFs. Results of data analysis showed that “lack of organisational culture” and “low involvement of top management” were ranked the highest barriers for implementing KM in ADFs. Moreover, respondents mentioned that they do not share openly their information with other employees to maintain their uniqueness and that the strict working environment of their ADFs is not encouraging creativity or enhancing learning culture. Furthermore, “continuous learning and enhancement” and “experimentation, feedback and reflection” were ranked by respondents as the highest building blocks of a learning organisation.

Research limitations/implications

This research focussed on ADFs in developing countries.

Practical implications

Implementing KM strategies will facilitate the enhancement of learning culture within ADFs in developing countries. This will impact positively on improving the performance and increasing the competitiveness and market share of ADFS.

Originality/value

The research identified the barriers of KM implementation in ADFs and the building blocks of creating a learning organisations. It focusses on improving the performance of ADFs through using the capabilities of KM towards building learning culture in ADFs. The proposed framework which was designed to facilitate the implementation of KM for enhancing the learning culture in ADFs in developing countries represents a synthesis that is novel and creative in thought and adds value to the knowledge in a manner that has not previously occurred.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research is to discuss a variety of empirical findings suggesting that surprise is positively related with enhanced memory recall. This opens the door for the assumption that surprising stimuli can be used in a controlled way to enhance learning.

Design/methodology/approach

A predictive model based on a Darwinian interpretation of this phenomenon is proposed. The model is coined CLEBS, which stands for “computer‐based learning enhanced by surprise”.

Findings

A discussion on how the model can be tested is provided in the context of a finance‐oriented Web‐based learning task, where subjects learn about investment instruments such as stocks and bonds.

Originality/value

Important implications are discussed, including possible applications in a variety of areas of interest to organizations in general.

Abstract

Purpose

The main purpose of the paper is to assess and suggest the ways and means to enhance a collaborative knowledge sharing culture in academic institutions, with special reference to information technology (IT)‐related education in the Management Faculty of the University of Pune.

Design/methodology/approach

The research is descriptive and empirical in nature because the primary data were collected using the survey method through fact finding techniques such as questionnaire and interview. The main purpose of this research is to obtain information concerning the current status of the phenomena to describe “what exists” with respect to variables or conditions in a situation.

Findings

The sustainability of any industry is closely linked to the manpower talent made available by the academic institutions. Therefore in order to service the needs of the industry in tune with rapidly changing trends, academic institutions have to implement innovative learning systems and be able to match up to the expectations of the industry for knowledge support. Collaborative knowledge sharing links the learning and knowledge processes to enhance organizational learning. The knowledge grows more with communication, sharing of ideas and transfer of knowledge through face‐to‐face communication, discussions, faculty development programs, industry‐institute interactions. Academic institutions should align their human resource strategies, practices and processes in such a way that collaborative knowledge sharing becomes a part of the work culture and overcome the barriers to knowledge sharing. There is need to develop systems that can recognize and reward the efforts of employees who share their knowledge. This can empower collaborative knowledge sharing culture in an academic institute.

Research limitations/implications

In the same context as the practical implications of the paper, it is also appropriate and important to study further how, and to what extent collaborative knowledge improves the performance of the academic institutes. Also, the impact of collaborative knowledge sharing on the quality of higher education.

Practical implications

The recommendations in this paper focus on factors influencing collaborative knowledge sharing culture and also the practices of collaborative knowledge sharing to enhance organizational learning in an academic institute.

Originality/value

This paper contributes original empirical data on the collaborative knowledge sharing strategy to enhance organizational learning.

Abstract

This chapter presents innovative approaches to active learning that were introduced into the teaching of preservice teachers at the Faculty of Education of University of West Bohemia, Pilsen, in the Czech Republic. Over the last three years, the Technology-Enhanced Learning course has seen substantial innovations in both the content and use of teaching strategies designed to prepare the students for their professional lives. The whole update of the course was implemented using the results of action research – all individual changes were rigorously tracked and analyzed. The state of the art in the active learning domain in education of preservice teachers is presented in this chapter.

There is a description of the procedure to update the course, based on the reflections of teachers and feedback from students, gathered during action research. Detailed evaluations of particular methods of active learning that have been proven in teaching are provided.

Besides practical activities with tablets and smartphones, during which students familiarize themselves with various types of applications and reflect on their use in teaching, the course was extended by the use of practical aids for the efficient inclusion of mobile technologies for teaching – the Czech version of Allan Carrington’s Padagogy Wheel. This aid is derived from the revised Bloom’s taxonomy and SAMR model and helps the systematic reflection of preservice teachers when preparing for technology-enhanced teaching.

A significant part of the teaching consists of cooperative projects between preservice teachers and pupils of elementary schools – for example, the preservice teachers help elementary school pupils discover possibilities of virtual reality during Google Cardboard activities, or preservice teachers in teams with elementary school pupils create digital stories together on the topic of Internet safety.

The innovative approach to active teaching in the Technology-Enhanced Learning course is apparent even during the exam. In the course of the exam, students process, present, and defend a lesson plan for the implementation of an activity using digital technologies.

Throughout the learning, as well as at the end, preservice teachers are encouraged to reflect on the teaching in the Technology-Enhanced Learning subject.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper tactics to implement the attack detection in medical Internet of things (IoT) devices using improved deep learning architecture for accomplishing the concept bring your own device (BYOD). Here, a simulation-based hospital environment is modeled where many IoT devices or medical equipment are communicated with each other. The node or the device, which is creating the attack are recognized with the support of attribute collection. The dataset pertaining to the attack detection in medical IoT is gathered from each node that is considered as features. These features are subjected to a deep belief network (DBN), which is a part of deep learning algorithm. Despite the existing DBN, the number of hidden neurons of DBN is tuned or optimized correctly with the help of a hybrid meta-heuristic algorithm by merging grasshopper optimization algorithm (GOA) and spider monkey optimization (SMO) in order to enhance the accuracy of detection. The hybrid algorithm is termed as local leader phase-based GOA (LLP-GOA). The DBN is used to train the nodes by creating the data library with attack details, thus maintaining accurate detection during testing.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper has presented novel attack detection in medical IoT devices using improved deep learning architecture as BYOD. With this, this paper aims to show the high convergence and better performance in detecting attacks in the hospital network.

Findings

From the analysis, the overall performance analysis of the proposed LLP-GOA-based DBN in terms of accuracy was 0.25% better than particle swarm optimization (PSO)-DBN, 0.15% enhanced than grey wolf algorithm (GWO)-DBN, 0.26% enhanced than SMO-DBN and 0.43% enhanced than GOA-DBN. Similarly, the accuracy of the proposed LLP-GOA-DBN model was 13% better than support vector machine (SVM), 5.4% enhanced than k-nearest neighbor (KNN), 8.7% finer than neural network (NN) and 3.5% enhanced than DBN.

Originality/value

This paper adopts a hybrid algorithm termed as LLP-GOA for the accurate detection of attacks in medical IoT for improving the enhanced security in healthcare sector using the optimized deep learning. This is the first work which utilizes LLP-GOA algorithm for improving the performance of DBN for enhancing the security in the healthcare sector.
