Abstract

IN common with virtually all manufacturing industries today, and probably more than most, aerospace companies are under increasing pressure to achieve ever greater cost‐effectiveness on their machine tool production lines. And in this particular industry, the demand is not simply for more output at less cost — it also means maintaining or even improving existing high standards of precision and quality.

Abstract

DURING most of last month and almost without exception, newspapers and journals, especially those serving trade and industry, have been referring to George Orwell's masterpiece (if that is what it was) almost as though it were divine script. This, despite the fact that at least as far as the magic date is concerned it was completely wrong. His prognostications have proved certainly no better than Nostradamus or Old Moore.

Abstract

Over 80 companies from throughout Europe and from the USA are already exhibitor‐listed in “Airmec News”, the preview for the biennial International Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Exhibition & Conference, which return to the Zuspa Halls, Zurich, from 10–13 February 1981. This preliminary list alone clearly indicates the comprehensive nature of developments in the facilities, services and support equipment employed in the maintenance of civil and military aircraft. It includes not only the repair, overhaul, maintenance and testing of airframes, engines, avionics and other equipment, but also the refurbishing of interiors, maintenance planning and management techniques and other innovative aids to efficiency and economy.

Abstract

IT was no surprise to us, that news published just as this issue was being prepared, that Clive Sinclair was in an advanced stage of examining the possibilities of his firm, known all over the world as pioneers of electronics and the one which has brought micro‐computers within the reach of every family, expanding into the production of battery‐driven electric motorcars. He has recognised, as so many other directorates have failed to do, that the recession can only be beaten by finding new markets for new products. The world of yesteryear will never return.

Abstract

War is, perhaps, mans greatest sin, which is not the same as saying war is never necessary — when an army of Argies shot up a small Royal Marine unit in the Falklands and occupied the land area against the will of the English speaking people, what does a self‐respecting country do? Well, the only answer is to ask what you would do if a renegade mob smashed into your house, abused your family and refused to leave. Let's face it, if you had not the muscle to eject them, the number dialled would be 999 and a squad car with a couple of boys in blue would be round double quick to do their duty.

Abstract

Twenty years of experience in airborne computers has resulted in the launch of the Ferranti ‘Proteus’ series — a new breed of general purpose computer for military avionic systems. Developed by the Edinburgh‐based Navigation Systems Department of Ferranti Defence Systems Ltd, Proteus introduces a flexible approach to multi‐architecture com‐puters. They are packaged as a 1/2 ATR short unit accommodating either single or multiple Central Processing Units (CPU).

Abstract

NEXT TO banking, we are informed, Business Consultancy is the most favoured profession for graduates in the United States and it is likely, as in so much else, that here in Britain the same trend will be followed. It follows, as the famous query in a one‐time quiz member put it, that ‘it all depends on what you mean by Business Consultancy’.
