Abstract

Purpose

To explore the use of video-stimulated reflection during read aloud activities in early childhood to promote self-awareness, reading comprehension, and metacognitive literacy practices.

Methodology/approach

The increasing visibility and accessibility of video recording devices across learning environments is the cause for investigating their potential utility as effective instructional tools. This chapter outlines a pedagogical approach to the implementation of video reflection in early childhood education. Grounded theory is used to build an understanding of how video can support effective emergent literacy and metacognitive strategy instruction.

Findings

Video recordings facilitated students’ reflection. Common reflective themes include revisiting the recorded event in reflective discussion, elaboration on story elements toward increasing comprehension, and explaining students’ own thinking. These findings indicate students’ ability to engage in emergent practices fundamental to a disciplinary literacy perspective.

Practical implications

The use of tablets as a video device in early childhood can be utilized to promote reading instruction and metacognition. Video reflection can leverage practices that are necessary for disciplinary literacies.

Abstract

Research has confirmed that franchise systems may change over their lifetime. It is argued that changes to franchise systems may be the result of changes in the level of uncertainty they face in their environments. It therefore examines the developments that have occurred both in the state of the environment and the nature of the franchise systems of one group of traditional franchisors in Britain – namely, the oil companies’ petrol retailing networks – over the past 20 years in order to assess the validity of this view and to shed some light on the long‐term developments of traditional franchises. In particular it considers whether increasing environmental uncertainty encourages traditional franchisors to adopt the characteristics of business format franchise agreements in order to tighten their control over their franchisees.

Abstract

As a result of an increasingly competitive petrol retailing environment and the rise of convenience stores in the food retailing sector, oil companies in Britain in the 1980s began to diversity into food retailing and convert their petrol stations into forecourt convenience stores. Drawing on case study evidence of Shell Retail, the paper examines how the company attempted to build its organisation into a strong brand by rebranding its forecourt outlets and introducing business format franchising to manage them. Utilising franchising, branding and food retailing literatures, the work investigates not only why Shell Retail believed business format franchising was more appropriate than traditional franchising or in‐company management for its rebranded forecourts but also the factors that eventually caused the arrangement to fail. In particular, the paper analyses the problems relating to business format franchising that Shell Retail encountered in order to provide guidance for other retailers who may be considering using it as an instrument in the rebranding process.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate how the physical and sensory environmental triggers interact with subjective consumer evaluations in the production of shopping experiences, an under-investigated theme, despite its relevance.

Design/methodology/approach

An interpretative multi-method approach was used by combining video observation with camera eyeglasses and in-depth interviews with 30 customers of a department store.

Findings

Results offer a holistic framework with four-dimensional axial combination involving physical comfort, psychological comfort, physical product evaluation and sensorial product evaluation. Based on this framework, results highlight the role of comfort and products in producing shopping experience in ordinary store visits.

Research limitations/implications

The findings contribute both to consumer experience studies and to the retail marketing literature in shading a light on experience production in ordinary store visits. Specifically, we detail these visits not as a static response to a given environment stimulus, but as a simultaneous objective and subjective combination able to produce experience.

Practical implications

The results encourage managers to understand the experience production not just as an outcome of managerially influenced elements, like décor or odor. It involves considering subjective elements in the design of consumers’ physical and sensorial retail experiences.

Originality/value

Adopting an innovative method of empirical data collection, results generated a framework that integrates the objective shopping environment and subjective consumer responses. This research considers the role of comfort and product features and quality both physically and sensorially to develop experiences in a holistic manner in ordinary shopping visits.

Abstract

Within the past few years, responsible educators, librarians, parents, counselors, social workers, therapists, and religious groups of all sexual persuasions and lifestyles have recognized the need for readily available reading material for lesbian and gay youth. Unfortunately, this material is often buried, because it is embedded in larger works. To meet this need, I have compiled and annotated 100 of the best works for young homosexuals, bisexuals, and heterosexuals. I have also included a few of the best works currently available on heterosexuality as a much needed source of knowledge for all young adults whether they are gay or straight, whether they remain childless or eventually become parents.
