Abstract
In this chapter, we draw on social capital and role theories to develop a theoretical model of global leader initiative and reputational effectiveness in spanning structural holes. We define global leaders as those assigned to work locations outside the borders of their home country. Global leaders (by virtue of their global work assignments) occupy structural holes that span geographical boundaries. By definition, this position provides them with special opportunities to use their social capital to span these structural holes. Our model aims to make two key contributions. First, we focus on firm and individual factors that influence the extent to which global leaders proactively use their social capital. Second, we address local, corporate, and personal factors that influence the relationship between spanning behavior and reputational effectiveness. We discuss research implications for testing our propositions and practical implications for applying the model to work organizations, with an emphasis on the benefits of more effectively leveraging the social capital of global leaders.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to describe the characteristics of severely psychiatrically impaired adolescents requiring day hospital management and the effectiveness of the service using standardised outcome measures.
Design/methodology/approach
The data was collected on adolescents aged 13‐17 years in two London boroughs, attending the day service over a period of one year. Outcome measures were HoNOSCA, CGAS, SDQ and qualitative data from feedback forms from adolescents and parents.
Findings
The adolescents (n=22) had varied disorders, but mainly depression, (n=9) and psychosis (n=4). HoNOSCA score on admission was mean 18.14 (SD 3.78) but by discharge it had reduced to mean 15.39 (SD 7.31) (p=0.07), and CGAS reduced from initial mean score of 43.83 (SD 9.90) to 53.17 (SD 12.04) (p=0.003). Attendance for 19 (86 per cent) adolescents was for less than six months. Following discharge 14 (64 per cent) returned to education or employment. Adolescents and their carers reported high levels of satisfaction. The findings indicate substantial improvement and satisfaction with the service. The size of the improvement in outcome scores and the consistency across the HoNOSCA and CGAS associated with high service satisfaction also suggest that the data is reliable.
Research limitations/implications
The small size of the sample and loss of data made it difficult to extrapolate from the results to other groups of impaired adolescents. There was no control group in the study and therefore it was not possible to demonstrate whether the improvement was due to spontaneous changes over time, Tier 3 CAMHS input or the attendance at the day service. It is difficult to demonstrate what proportion of adolescents who were admitted to the day service would have required a Tier 4 in patient admission had the service not been available. A larger study using a more robust design involving randomisation to the day‐service or in‐patient service would provide important comparative data regarding the service benefits.
Originality/value
Currently there is little provision for severely psychiatrically impaired adolescents who require a day treatment programme. Day patient programmes appear to offer a useful and accessible treatment method. The service is much cheaper than an in‐patient service, and may also reduce the demands for or duration of inpatient admission. Unfortunately the service did not obtain continuation funding in view of NHS funding cuts, rather than dissatisfaction by local commissioners, and so needed to close. The data presented here can hopefully be used to support the case for child and adolescent psychiatric day programmes.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to describe, analyze and understand international users' library experience in the Digital Age in order to inform library service design and ensure it provides an inclusive environment. In this study, the behavioral and experiential aspects of user library experience are merged to develop essential interconnections between information behavior (IB) and user experience (UX) in the context of the academic library with the goal of constructing a more holistic understanding of ‘library experience.
Design/methodology/approach
The study was built on the concept “library experience” through analyzing its essential components of IB and UX. It was developed through findings from mixed methods research, consisting of the quantitative investigation from a library log analysis, and qualitative investigations via cognitive mapping exercises and semi-structured interviews, both targeted on the largest single group of international students in United Kingdom – international Chinese students.
Findings
The findings demonstrated the complexity and multilayered characteristics of international Chinese students' library context, and three unique contexts emerged from the data shaping their library experience. Building on the previous findings on the connections between IB and UX, the work attempted to redefine “library experience” by joining both behavioral and experiential aspects. It is found that the key components of cultural library experience are the multilayered context, cultural group's perception needs, sense-making process and subjective evaluations.
Originality/value
This study joins the behavioral and experiential perspectives together to explore library experience in a more holistic way and proposes a systematic structure to understand and analyze library experience, especially that of international users in a cross-cultural context, which, in turn, will better serve their information needs and inform the design of a more equal and inclusive library system.

Purpose
The study examines the relationships between the dimensions of psychological empowerment and organizational citizenship behavior (OCB). The purpose is to identify specific dimensions of psychological empowerment that are linked to above average or “beyond the expected” citizenship behaviors.
Design/methodology/approach
A theoretical basis for a linkage between the four dimensions of psychological empowerment and dimensions of OCB was developed. Using a sample of 137 participants, these theoretical relationships were tested with hierarchical linear multiple regressions.
Findings
There are differential relationships between the dimensions of psychological empowerment and the dimensions of OCB. The OCB dimensions of contentiousness, altruism and obedience are linked to the psychological empowerment dimension of meaning: conscientiousness is also linked to competency.
Research limitations/implications
The study sample was single industry and single organization to avoid interindustry and interorganizational contamination, and the results may lack generalizability. Therefore, researchers are encouraged to test the study hypotheses in other industries and occupations.

Originality/value
This paper reports the first known study of the relationships between Spreitzer's psychological empowerment dimensions and OCB. The value is the identification of manipulable relationships that can explain actual empowerment and provide pragmatic guidance for managers to increase empowerment and thus hopefully organizational effectiveness.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to address the issue of how university students address learning through playing wicked games.
Design/methodology/approach
Using a case study run by the author of a university undergraduate education module, qualitative data are provided to support a pragmatic model of addressing the issues of realistic behavior and outcomes.
Findings
Through a combination of elements – mainly, integration of more conventional academic research, use of repeated points of contact between students and the lecturer and extensive reflection after the activity by the student – it is possible to provide for a gameplay experience that more closely follows real-world outcomes than would otherwise occur.
Research limitations/implications
The use of a single case study clearly limits the ability to generalize and implies the need to replicate the work in new iterations and in new contexts.
Practical implications
The paper highlights the importance of grounding wicked gameplay in reality, if they are to maximize their utility as a teaching practice. It also stresses the high level of engagement, not only on the part of the students but also on the part of the lecturer, who must be an active part of the gameplay structure.
Originality/value
The consideration of a continuous process of grounding wicked games in reality is one that has not been explored by the existing literature, so it offers useful insights into practice that will be of value to both practitioners and theorists in the field.

Two issues ago, The Bottom Line (TBL) included an article by American Library Association president‐elect Betty Turock, entitled “Three business trends that strengthen library operations”. These trends involved: creating organizations in which innovation can flourish, creating organizations which prepare and live by strategic plans, and creating organizations which participate in the national political arena.
