Abstract

Purpose

Local organisations have been established on participatory approach whose central purpose is to establish development activities bringing about positive change as four pillars of developments: to establish decentralised robust local organisation for sustainable forest management to enhance livelihood of rural people, to meet the forest products basic needs of local people, targeted interventions for poverty alleviation and social mobilisation initiatives and biodiversity conservation climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Design/methodology/approach

Local organisational elites designed/conceptualised the concept, where it can be operated organisationally and in local organisational context that provides new ways and methods to develop conceptual framework (Table I), which sheds light on involvement of poor and underprivileged members in decision-making process and distribution of benefit on equity basis.

Findings

The findings will lead to a positive change through the organisational elite model through both reorganising organisations and restructuring of power with change in the society and reduce the impact of rational choices, vested interests of elites (leaders of local organisation) and political factors, which are otherwise playing a game or tragedy of commons.

Research limitations/implications

Because of the limited resources and time, the authors are unable to verify it on the other development line agencies such as drinking water scheme, livestock, health and cooperative.

Practical implications

It considerably appears that the impacts are very sound to conclude from the review of above models of elites that provide a very clear understanding and useful conceiving lens to formulate how participation occurs in the executive committee of the community forestry user groups (CFUG) and community-based organisations based on three key elements. First are the caste and the caste structure of the community. Second is the wealth status of the individual, and third is power created both from wealth and caste. This should be determined from the local organisational elite model (Table I) about the nature of interactions on the executive of the CFUGs and other vehicles of local community-based development organisations.

Social implications

Local organisations will provide an opportunity in reality to both elites and non-elites to considerably change, make aware and create a realistic situation to determine the dialectical opportunity to develop relationship, interaction and configuration between elite and non-elite members both outside and inside of the local organisations.

Originality/value

It has not been found in literatures yet such sort of concept developed in development field particularly in the development activities performed by participation of local users. Hence, it is certainly original conceptual framework.

Abstract

Purpose

The existence of disadvantaged sub-populations whose talents are under-leveraged is a problem faced by developing and developed countries alike. Life history data revealed that a large proportion of elite business leaders in the Caribbean emerged from childhood poverty (families subsisting on US$1-2 a day, 40 percent). The purpose of this paper is to examine the key factors supporting the career development of elite leaders from a broad socioeconomic spectrum and both genders in order to build a model of career development for elite leadership.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected via in-depth interviews from a deliberately gender-balanced sample of 39 male and 39 female elite business leaders. Thematic analysis identified consistencies across independent interviews and resulted in a model identifying factors supporting pre-career development as key to eventual attainment of elite leadership.

Findings

Findings indicated that in childhood and youth, proactivity plus talent recognition and mentoring by adults enhanced access to early developmental opportunities. Early career mentoring guided talented youth to build personal drive, self-esteem, altruism, and integrity, which created a foundation for developing career capital through values-based action. Altogether, these findings indicate the importance of pre-career relational capital to attainment of elite career success.

Originality/value

Difficult-to-access elite leaders provided rich information emphasizing the importance of pre-career development in childhood and youth to eventual elite leadership attainment. Virtually all of the elites in the sample remember being identified as talented early in life and consider early messages about drive to achieve as well as support received from parents, teachers, and other interested adults to be critical to their success. Hence, a process of talent recognition and encouragement to excel appear to be crucial for connecting young people to important relational capital allowing them to eventually achieve elite status, particularly those individuals hailing from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The purpose of this study is to show under what conditions a special economic zone will succeed at spurring development and at sparking broader liberalization.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors use a combination of formal modeling and case studies.

Findings

Most special economic zones fail because of rent-seeking. Successful zones create positive economic and political externalities to other regions. Credible reforms are associated with turning the opposition to the zones into supporters, as a consequence to the positive externalities.

Originality/value

The authors add heterogeneity to the model of political elite dynamics, which leads to significant enhancements of the model and removes the pro-centralization bias of the Blanchard and Shleifer's (2001) model. They also criticize Weingast's federalism model as applied to China. Success of China is explained by a different mechanism, which we put forth in this paper.

Abstract

Purpose

The main purpose of this paper is to propose a strategy to promote the culture of peace in the Palestinianā€Israeli struggle. The Bangladesh approach to peacemaking offers a dual strategy: conflict management in the Israeliā€Gaza situation and conflict resolution in the Israeliā€West Bank case. The first is designed to reduce the level of violence in intensified conflict. The second intends to build the foundations of a peaceful social order.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper develops and elaborates the second part of the Bangladesh approach. It offers a strategy to build the foundations for a peaceful social order in the Israeli Westā€Bank situation. The paper includes theoretical background, examples from other cases of intractable conflict, and lessons from the ā€œMinds of Peace Experimentā€ ā€“ a simulation of a potential Palestinianā€Israeli public negotiating congress ā€“ which was conducted at the University of Missouriā€St Louis.

Findings

The paper presents two competitive models of peacemaking and proclaims them complementary: the political Ć©lite and the public assembly. The first intends to reach a peace pact through interactions between political Ć©lites. The second intends to prepare the people for a reasonable peace process through the establishment of a major institution for conflict resolution ā€“ a public negotiating congress.

Originality/value

The publicā€assembly model is new in the Palestinianā€Israeli experience. The paper offers a program to create the conditions for establishing a major Palestinianā€Israeli public assembly: a public negotiating congress. It is the first time in the history of the struggle where ordinary people are intended to be substantially involved in the negotiating and the peacemaking process.

Abstract

Purpose ā€“ While important changes have been made in the American workplace, gender inequality persists. Contemporary analyses of occupational segregation suggest that gendered roles and identities may be playing a role, yet few studies explicitly tackle the effects of occupational identity on female disadvantage at work. Moreover, most previous research ignores the structured, multidimensionality of occupational identity focusing on more overt one-dimensional forms of status differentiation. Using sociological work as a case, these analyses delineate how occupational identities contribute to and differentiate publication success ā€“ and thus status hierarchies ā€“ for men and women in the sociological field.Findings ā€“ Net of human capital, results demonstrate the pronounced effect of the structure of occupational identity on publication: An often hidden form of job-queuing, occupational identities are gendered and influence the publication process. Differential rewards based on subtly gendered distinctions prove an important source of persistent inequalities.Social implications ā€“ While gender alone may not directly influence publication in premier research journals for more recent cohorts of sociologists, the gendered nature of research specialization and the distribution of rewards based, in part, on specialization present a troubling, more subtle stratifying mechanism.Originality/value of the chapter ā€“ This chapter contributes to our understanding of the puzzling pertinence of gender inequality in the academy by pinpointing how the organization of research into specialties is gendered and how this gendering of research affects important outcomes, such as publication. The paper also contributes to our broader understanding of inequality at work as an example of how occupational identity is multidimensional and networked.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to discuss the cost of eā€participation from the managerial perspective.

Design/methodology/approach

The use of digital media to consult and engage citizens and companies in the decisionā€making process is a way of improving the design and legitimatization of decisions, as well as potentially increasing the likelihood of successful implementation of policies. This paper discusses if the potential economic benefits from increased or qualitatively improved involvement inherently are long term and have to compete with other activities undertaken by government.

Findings

There are great uncertainties regarding the magnitude of the positive effects on governance since there are not only positive, but also negative externalities of eā€participation; thus, there are major challenges in measuring and capitalizing on the eā€participation. Part of the reason for the uncertainty is the lack of explicit awareness of the choice of technology, communication style and institutional approach to implementing eā€participation. Further, there is the need to be aware of the administrative costs in transferring eā€participation practices and techniques.

Originality/value

The perspective on cost of eā€participation is not well explored. The discussion raised emphasizes the urgency of the issue.

Abstract

While transgender people have had some success in gaining recognition and human rights in the collection of nations known colloquially as ā€˜the Westā€™, a well-financed reactionary movement is attempting to roll back these gains. A constellation of white supremacist, conservative, and heteropatriarchal organizations and movements are in collusion with so-called ā€˜gender critical feministsā€™ to resist feminist and gender-inclusive challenges to traditional gender and sexual hierarchies by targeting trans girls and women ā€“ more so than trans boys, trans men and non-binary people ā€“ for surveillance and exclusion (Sharrow, 2021a, 2021b). In the past several years, bills designed to delegitimize and exclude trans people in various ways have been introduced in many US state legislatures. Within this larger anti-trans campaign, bills designed specifically to block trans girls and women from participating in ā€˜femaleā€™ sport have been signed into law in 11 US states to date and proposed in many others. It is no accident that organized sport is a site for contesting the inclusion of transgender people and that transgender girls and women are the primary targets of these campaigns. Debates about criteria for female eligibility and a succession of pseudo-scientific forms of ā€˜sex testingā€™ in elite levels of sport highlight both the ideological nature of the two-sex system and the intense material and cultural investment in maintaining its faƧade. In this chapter, I mobilize moral panic theory to focus specifically on anti-trans campaigns in the United States aimed at preventing trans girls and women from participating in ā€˜femaleā€™ sport as evidence of a testosterone panic.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate reverse image transfer as it applies to both celebrities (actors/models) and celebrity athletes in a New Zealand context. It extends the work of Garland and Charbonneau which examined reverse image transfer (product image transferring to endorser) as it applied to celebrity athlete endorsers alone.

Design/methodology/approach

The data for the study are collected from 240 New Zealand university undergraduate students who are split equally into eight treatment groups. Using Ohanian's sourceā€credibility scale, each group rate several celebrities or celebrity athletes on their suitability for endorsing two contrasting products: orange juice (representing a positively perceived product) and cigarettes (representing a negatively perceived product). ANOVA (analysis of variance) is used to compare means between celebrities/celebrity athletes and the products they endorse. The study is a close replication of Till's work in the USA.

Findings

The results show a pronounced polarising effect for celebrity athletes, as opposed to celebrities (actors/models), for the endorsement of both products but particularly for cigarettes, the negative product. The potential for reverse image transfer is real, demanding careful attention by celebrities, agents and marketers during evaluation of endorsement opportunities.

Research limitations/implications

Though not compromising the research integrity, the sample of New Zealand students is restrictive. Further extension of the research is advisable to address limitations based on sample composition, cultural setting and time of research.

Originality/value

Aside from addressing the paucity of research on reverse image transfer, this paper signals important managerial implications for celebrity endorsers and their agents.

Abstract

Purpose

Surrogate-assisted evolutionary algorithms (SAEAs) are the most popular algorithms used to solve design optimization problems of expensive and complex engineering systems. However, it is difficult for fixed surrogate models to maintain their accuracy and efficiency in the face of different issues. Therefore, the selection of an appropriate surrogate model remains a significant challenge. This paper aims to propose a dynamic adaptive hybrid surrogate-assisted particle swarm optimization algorithm (AHSM-PSO) to address this issue.

Design/methodology/approach

A dynamic adaptive hybrid selection method (AHSM) is proposed. This method can identify multiple ensemble models formed by integrating different numbers of excellent individual surrogate models. Then, according to the minimum root-mean-square error, the best suitable surrogate model is dynamically selected in each generation and is used to assist PSO.

Findings

Experimental studies on commonly used benchmark problems, and two real-world design optimization problems demonstrate that, compared with existing algorithms, the proposed algorithm achieves better performance.

Originality/value

The main contribution of this work is the proposal of a dynamic adaptive hybrid selection method (AHSM). This method uses the advantages of different surrogate models and eliminates the shortcomings of experience selection. Furthermore, the empirical results of the comparison of the proposed algorithm (AHSM-PSO) with existing algorithms on commonly used benchmark problems, and two real-world design optimization problems demonstrate its competitiveness.
