Abstract

This paper provides a quantitative and qualitative assessment of the effects of electroplating on polymer parts made by stereolithography (SL) and laser sintering. A series of test samples were coated with copper and nickel with varying thickness. Thicker coatings (120 μm) were reproduced with a repeatability that should not adversely affect the tolerances with which such parts may be produced given the tolerances of the initial rapid prototyping processes themselves. Thinner coatings (20 μm) resulted in a smother surface finish than thicker coatings for SL parts, however the converse was true for laser‐sintered parts. Composite theory was used to predict that thicker coating would lead to higher Young's modulus in parts and this was shown to be true in physical tests although the practical values were lower than the predicted values especially for thicker coatings. Physical tests also confirmed that thicker coatings increased UTS and impact energy but had a minimal effect on the ductility of parts.

Abstract

Ion plating or ion vapour deposition has become a widely accepted process for the application of dense, uniform and very adherent aluminium coatings for corrosion protection. Because of its performance advantages, this process is expected to replace cadmium electroplating in the near future. Recently, General Engineering Radcliffe Ltd took out a UK licence from McDonnell Aircraft Corporation to manufacture commercial machines called ‘Ivadizer’ for applying aluminium coatings for corrosion protection. The purpose of this paper is to present the physical and technical aspects of the ion plating process and its unique characteristics in corrosion prevention.

Abstract

In this paper, reproduced by permission of “Metal Finishing” (New Jersey), the author enumerates the required properties of electroplated gold coatings on printed circuit boards and wire to ensure satisfactory bonding by ultrasonic means. The gold plating procedures and process control methods which are necessary to produce coatings yielding consistently high bond strengths are described.

Abstract

Presents the background to and efforts being made to find a direct production route using rapid prototype (RP) parts as the electrodes for electrical discharge machining (EDM). It would have the double effect of unlocking the potential of the EDM die sinking process and expanding the role of RP in the production environment. Thin coated stereolithography (SL) models have been used to erode hardened tool steel to a depth of 4mm. Machining efficiency of these copper coated RP models is not comparable to that of conventional machined solid copper electrodes. Parametric optimization has been applied, achieving substantial improvements in machining efficiency. At present these electrodes are suitable for semi‐roughing or finishing cuts in EDM die sinking. Electroforming copper into SL cavities shows potential for manufacture of electrodes with comparable performance to that of solid copper.

Abstract

THE potentialities of television in industry were referred to by this journal (March, 1954) when we reported on the Pye TV unit which had been installed in the National College of Rubber Technology, enabling shop floor demonstrations to be seen in detail by large numbers of students in the lecture theatre some way off.

Abstract

Jebron Ltd of Wednesbury are one of the first companies world‐wide to use the revolutionary Oztelloy electrodeposited stainless steel process, developed by BCI‐Permalite Ltd. The reliability and simplicity of the Oztelloy system is underlined by the fact that whilst Jebron had experience of anodising, they had not previously undertaken electroplating. Furthermore, the stainless steel deposition is being carried out on a mixed semi‐automatic line which is also used for chrome, brass and bright nickel plating.
