Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research is to substantiate the processes of implementing the electronic forms of business integration under the conditions of digital transformation by market players.

Design/Methodology/Approach

The methods used in this research include cooperative game theory, systemic analysis and statistical analysis.

Findings

This research presents the substantiation of the processes of implementing the electronic forms of business integration under the conditions of digital transformation by market players. The proprietary methodology of evaluation of the set problems includes three procedures: analysis of the electronic forms of business integration that are used in the digital economy in the world, which envisages their systematisation; evaluation of the effectiveness of implementing the processes of business integration with the use of such forms and their forecast estimation under the condition of individual development of the market environment's players, as well as determination of advantages; and development of the practical implications for managing the electronic forms of business integration for the national companies of developing countries (with forecasting based on the cooperative game theory). The modern electronic forms of business integration include electronic cash (e-cash), electronic data interchange, electronic banking (e-banking), electronic marketing (e-marketing), electronic insurance (e-insurance) and electronic trade (e-trade). Analysis of the effectiveness of implementing the processes of business integration with the use of the electronic forms is performed based on electronic trade, which is used under the conditions of the functioning of digital trade platforms (Internet stores). Such digital trade platforms, as the forms of business strategies, are Amazon and eBay Inc. These two American companies were selected because the United States has the leading position in this sphere. The comparative analysis showed the advantages of participation of players in partnership with the use of electronic trade within two digital platforms, connected to cost saving on advertising and organisation of trade. The practical implications of implementing the electronic forms of business integration for the national companies of developing countries are also presented; they are formed based on the practice of implementing the advantages revealed in the activities of the digital trade platforms Amazon and eBay Inc.

Originality/Value

The originality and value of this research are due to the further development of provisions on the specifics of the process of implementing the electronic forms of business integration under the conditions of digital transformation by market players.

Abstract

Electronic commerce enables business development for marketing channel intermediaries and strengthens their existing operations and strategic management. This research shows that electronic commerce provides stepwise business development refinement and repositioning in the form of process change and increased customer service. Based on marketing and logistics literature, a business development model with three developmental phases is proposed in this paper. The findings are based on the electronic commerce development of three intermediaries providing industrial products and services in the northern European market. Refinement is achieved through a focus on activities for internal efficiency, and through changing processes for increased integration, shorter time and lower costs. Repositioning involves extended focus on service improvements, image and customer tailored services. It is found that electronic commerce has not radically reshaped and developed the role of marketing channel intermediaries. Instead, it has strengthened existing business. Future electronic commerce efforts need to be viewed in a business wide development context, including structural change and reaching new segments or markets, to utilise fully the development potential of electronic commerce.

Abstract

Electronic commerce (e‐commerce) is the new buzzword for doing business on the Internet. A main problem for business‐to‐business e‐commerce lies in the need for the information systems of the involved organizations to exchange meaningful information. For letting the information systems of business partners accomplish electronic business communication, semantic interoperability is necessary to ensure that exchange of information makes sense – that the provider and receiver of information have a common understanding of the “meaning” of the requested services and data. Traditional EDI is not sufficient to solve electronic business communication problems in an open and dynamic environment. Summarizes the development from traditional EDI towards new advanced electronic business communication approaches offering agent‐based e‐commerce marketplaces in which the meaning of business messages is managed by means of shared repositories for formally specifying the semantics of business messages. Within this framework, XML is the practical foundation for structuring the information to be interchanged.

Abstract

This study seeks to explore and report international business students’ perceptions and expectations of electronic library services at the University of Illinois at Urbana‐Champaign. A total of 143 international business students on campus volunteered to fill out a survey. The results were analyzed using descriptive statistics as well as inferential statistics such as t‐tests and correlation. A significant portion of international business students has no prior experience with electronic library services in their home countries. Moreover, about a half of international business students go to libraries other than the Business and Economics Library, partly because they provide better environment for study. Although electronic resources are available without the constraint of location, providing reference services for those who do not use the Business and Economics Library becomes a challenge. Virtual reference is an excellent tool, but most international business students do not see it as an important library service. Based on the results, implications for information literacy and virtual reference service are discussed.

Abstract

An electronic business to business procurement marketplace is an inter‐organizational information system through which multiple buyers and sellers interact to accomplish market‐making activities for corporate purchases. In this study, the extent to which organizations had plans to utilize electronic marketplaces for purchases was investigated. A survey was conducted in Norway. Survey results indicate that most organizations had plans, only 3 percent had no plans while 34 percent had concrete plans to utilize electronic marketplaces for purchases. Responding organizations planned to purchase significantly more indirect goods than indirect services on electronic marketplaces. The main benefit expected from utilizing electronic marketplaces for purchases was reduced transaction costs. Strategic importance of business to business electronic markets can significantly predict the extent to which responding organizations had plans to utilize electronic marketplaces for purchases.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this article is to examine how electronic commerce can fundamentally change the inter‐organisational processes at the interface between the buyer and supplier.

Design/methodology/approach

First, an overview is provided of the evolution of B2B commerce and the typical business models that have been developed. Second, a number of factors are identified which impact on the buyer‐supplier interface in B2B commerce. Finally, the conclusions will examine the implications for managers involved in B2B commerce who have to interact across organisational boundaries.

Findings

Electronic commerce not only enables the redesign of internal organisational processes but is extended into both the buyer and supplier organisations. Innovations in electronic commerce have a key role to play in managing inter‐organisational networks of supply chain members. It is also found that in many instances electronic commerce is radically changing the way in which organisations have traditionally traded. As well as impacting the external trading arrangements between buyers and suppliers, electronic commerce is also affecting the traditional roles of the functions involved in managing the buyer/supplier relationship.

Practical implications

It is essential for top management to understand that the internet is more than a tool or technique, but rather something that is woven into the fabric of the organisation and the relationship with its environment. Adopting such an approach represents a drastic change from traditional management thinking and, more importantly, for management's behaviour.

Originality/value

This paper provides an improved understanding of how the internet represents a powerful technology for commerce and communication at the buyer‐supplier interface. This will be a useful insight for academics and practitioners alike.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to show how the functionality of electronic marketplaces can facilitate collaborative supply chain planning. Supply chain planning processes are identified and analysed using a supply chain management focus. The paper also gives a brief introduction to a framework for supply chain management and to the typical structure of electronic marketplaces. Furthermore, three collaborative supply chain planning scenarios are defined, and it is shown how collaborative supply chain planning typically could be implemented on an electronic marketplace by the means of a Web‐based demonstration. As such, the paper shows how electronic marketplaces can be used to enable supply chain integration.
