Abstract
Purpose
Incorporating electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) in the design life of traditional satellites is entrenched in the satellite industry. However, EMC treatment of CubeSats has not been widely pursued, for various possible reasons. CubeSats are a young technology platform initially intended for students and researchers at universities to create awareness and excitement amongst them for space technology. This and other factors limited the need for stringent EMC planning. As CubeSats mature in complexity, the success of future missions will rely on incorporating proper EMC designs in their development. This paper aims to address the experimental investigation of known EMC culprits within a CubeSat’s context.
Design/methodology/approach
Electromagnetic interference suppression effectiveness of cable trays in CubeSats, as well as crosstalk in high-speed/frequency data links, is investigated, using the PC/104 connector stack. Some recommendations for improving the EMC and, therefore, enhancing satellite mission success are provided.
Findings
It was found that, if physically feasible in the CubeSat, cable trays are significant radiation suppressors. A further investigation into crosstalk between pins of the PC/104 connector stack showed that grounding a pin in between two signal pins leads to a significant reduction in the coupled signal.
Originality/value
This paper addresses EMC within the context of a CubeSat and outlines experiments done resulting in cost-effective methods of reducing interference by using already available material (such as unused signal pins available in the PC/104 connector).

Abstract
Purpose
Differing from previous studies trying to solve the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) issue by addressing single factor, this study aims to combine measures of shielding, filtering and grounding to design parameters with the Taguchi method at the beginning of product design to come up with the optimal parameter combination.
Design/methodology/approach
EMC-related performance such as radiated emission, conduction interference and electrical fast transient/burst immunity (EFT) are response variables, whereas the printed circuit board and mechanic design-relevant parameters are considered as control factors. The noise factors are peripherals used together with the tablet.
Findings
The optimal design parameter matrix based on results from the application and integration of multivariate analysis method of principal component grey relation and technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution suggests 14 grounding screw holes, cooling aperture of casing at diameter of 3 mm and staggered layout and 300O filter located at source of noise. Validation of this matrix shows around 10, 1 and 8 per cent improvement in radiation, conduction interference and EFT immunity.
Originality/value
The multivariate quality parameters’ design method proposed by this study improves EMC characteristics of products and meets the design specification required by customer, accelerating electronic product research and development process and complying with electromagnetic interference test regulations set forth by individual country.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to use the Taguchi Method for parametric design in the early stages of product development. electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) issues can be considered in the early stages of product design to reduce counter-measure components, product cost and labor consumption increases due to a number of design changes in the R&D cycle and to accelerate the R&D process.
Design/methodology/approach
The three EMC characteristics, including radiated emission, conducted emission and fast transient impulse immunity of power, are considered response values; control factors are determined with respect to the relevant parameters for printed circuit board and mechanical design of the product and peripheral devices used in conjunction with the product are considered as noise factors. The optimal parameter set is determined by using the principal component gray relational analysis in conjunction with both response surface methodology and artificial neural network.
Findings
Market specifications and cost of components are considered to propose an optimal parameter design set with the number of grounded screw holes being 14, the size of the shell heat dissipation holes being 3 mm and the arrangement angle of shell heat dissipation holes being 45 degrees, to dispose of 390 O filters on the noise source.
Originality/value
The optimal parameter set can improve EMC effectively to accommodate the design specifications required by customers and pass test regulations.

Abstract
Purpose
With the increasing number of onboard controlled static converters in aeronautics, methods to design lighter configurations are required. This study aims to help the designer sizing optimal electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) filters and, moreover, finding optimal voltage levels and switching frequency, which have a great impact on the design and global mass of such converters.
Design/methodology/approach
Analytical models for capacitors, inductors and heatsink are settled. Using frequency modeling, EMC can be studied analytically. To deal with frequency and voltages variations, models of perturbations sources are developed. Concerning the problem of surveilling thousands of harmonics to check the whole frequency range of EMC standards in optimization, a strategy that drastically reduces the number of computations and has a good convergence is proposed.
Findings
The methods settled in the paper allow to optimize a controlled static converter with its EMC filters along with finding optimal switching frequency and voltage levels. A study on a three-phase rectifier reveals the importance of the switching frequency on converter design with EMC filters. A 28 per cent mass reduction is predicted by increasing the switching frequency from 10 to 30 kHz. The designed converters are verified by simulations.
Research limitations/implications
Investigating the voltage levels along with the switching frequency has not been achieved yet for static controlled converters with EMC constraints. The approach lacks experimental validations, but it is currently ongoing.
Originality/value
Dealing analytically with the changes of frequency or voltages in an EMC study is a new feature. The possibility to use deterministic algorithm is essential for dealing with the important number of constraints and the numerous interactions between all the parts of the problem, especially EMC.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is performing a global sensitivity analysis for automotive electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) measurements related to the CISPR 25 setup in order to examine the effect of the setup uncertainties on the resonance phenomenon.
Design/methodology/approach
An integral equation formulation is combined with Darwin model and special Green’s functions to model the configuration. The method of Sobol’ indices is used to gain sensitivity factors enhanced with a polynomial chaos metamodel.
Findings
The proposed model resulted in by orders of magnitude lower number of degrees of freedom and runtime compared to popular numerical methods, e.g. finite element method. The result of the sensitivity study is in good agreement with the underlying physical phenomena and improves the understanding of the resonances.
Practical implications
The fast model supplemented by the sensitivity factors can be used in EMC design and optimization.
Originality/value
The proposed method is original in the sense of combining a polynomial chaos metamodel with a low-cost integral equation model to reduce the computational demand for the sensitivity study.

Abstract
Purpose
Global sensitivity analysis (SA) by means of Sobol’ indices enhanced with different surrogate modeling techniques is performed in this work. The purpose is to investigate the influence of measurement uncertainties and the environment characteristics themselves on the desired field uniformity in reverberation chambers (RCs). This yields an efficient apparatus for the stirring and chamber design process.
Design/methodology/approach
The technique of Sobol’ indices, as a candidate of global SA methods, is suitable for high fluctuations due to its robustness, which can be addressed to the stochastic nature of the RC environment. The aim of using surrogate modeling techniques is to compute the indices efficiently with a moderate number of required simulations. The powerfulness of this approach is introduced in a simple numerical example in which the physical phenomena can be identified more straightforwardly.
Findings
This method can provide useful knowledge in the lower frequency range, where the ideal properties of the electromagnetic field in RCs cannot be established, and the importance of the setup parameters can vary from configuration to configuration. In addition, it can serve as a basis for setup adaptation during parallelized electromagnetic compatibility tests, which would result in a more time- and cost-saving option in industrial applications in the future.
Originality/value
Despite the previous attempts, a profound investigation of multiple setup parameters is still a hot topic. The main contribution of this work is the extension of the application area of the method of Sobol’ indices to RCs, which has not been done so far.

Abstract
Purpose
The frequency simulation and optimisation of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) filter is often computation time consuming. The purpose of this paper is to propose an approach for easy and fast modelling and optimization of power electronics structures.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper proposes an approach for easy and fast modelling and optimization of power electronics structures. It focuses on the EMC filter design. To achieve this task time simulation, FFT and automatic frequency modelling are combined.
Findings
An automatic frequency modelling is proposed and also gives automatically the model gradients. Therefore, the model can be used to optimize the EMC filter, but also can help in choosing its topology. Several optimization algorithms are used and compared.
Research limitations/implications
The power electronics load is supposed to be a set of predefined harmonic sources, obtained by time simulation + FFT before the optimisation process.
Practical implications
The frequency model allows for the rapid designing and comparing of several structures or modelling hypothesis with regard to the parasitic elements and circuit imperfections.
Originality/value
The frequency model is automatically generated, and sizing criteria on the component (e.g. inductors, capacitor) can be added in an analytical form, for example, to deal with volume or mass criteria.
