Abstract
THE improvement in the British standard of living is generally desired. Politicians have not only subscribed to that ideal but some of them have indicated the rate at which we should advance. There are, however, certain trends in the country's economic life which must be reversed if we are to make any progress in that direction.

Abstract
Purpose
Since its independence, Kazakhstan has been improving its corporate governance system according to recommendations of international organizations. It was promised that the adoption of shareholder primacy approach would have a positive impact on its financial market growth. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to quantitatively analyse whether Kazakhstani corporate governance is moving towards a shareholder primacy corporate governance approach and its impact on financial market growth.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper will conduct a quantitative analysis. Firstly, the changes in corporate governance that occurred between 1991 and 2017 will be analysed using 52 corporate governance variables. Thus, a questionnaire will be used to collect data. When the questionnaire is completed, all data will be converted into numbers. Then, multiple liner regression will be used to estimate the impact of change in corporate governance.
Findings
The paper finds that Kazakhstan is successfully adopting shareholder-friendly corporate governance standards and so-called convergence has also occurred. Moreover, it is suggested that reforms in Kazakhstani corporate governance system have not yet brought the desired result of prosperous financial market and high flows of foreign investments.
Originality/value
Analysis specifically considers the changes in Kazakhstani corporate governance system and uses quantitative methods, whereas there is a lack (if not complete absence) of quantitative studies regarding Kazakhstani corporate governance.

Abstract
THIS MONTH, the engine overhaul shop of Imperial Airways assumes the commitment to overhaul and repair Rolls Royce RB211 engines and modules for the Lockheed 1011. The original organisation, transferred from Croydon to near Cardiff in 1940 and now named British Airways Engine Overhaul Ltd (BEOL), a division of British Airways, now overhauls and repairs no less than 13 different series of 5 basic engine types produced by 3 manufacturers, namely:

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to minimize operating cost, adhere to pollution norms and maintain reserve and voltage levels subject to various operational concerns, including non linear characteristics of generators and fuel limitation issues, which are useful for the current power system applications.
Design/methodology/approach
Improved control settings are required while considering multiple conflicting operational objectives that necessitate using the modern bio-inspired algorithm ant lion optimizer (ALO) as the main optimization tool. Fuzzy decision-making mechanism is incorporated in ALO to extract the best compromise solution (BCS) among set of non-dominated solutions.
Findings
The BCS records of IEEE-30 bus and JEAS-118 bus systems are updated in this work. Numerical simulation results comparison and comprehensive performance analysis justify the applicability of the intended algorithm to solve multi-objective dynamic optimal power flow (DOPF) problem over the state-of-art methods.
Originality/value
Optimal control settings are obtained for IEEE-30 and JEAS-118 bus systems with the objectives of minimizing fuel cost and emission in dynamic environment considering take-or-pay fuel contract issue. The fuzzy supported ALO (FSALO) is applied first time to solve the DOPF problem.

Abstract
A description is given of the English Electric ‘Thesaurofacet’, a faceted classification and thesaurus covering engineering and related scientific, technical, and management subjects. A novel feature of the system is the integration of the classification schedules and thesaurus. Each term appears both in the thesaurus and in the schedules. In the schedules the term is displayed in the most appropriate facet and hierarchy: the thesaurus supplements this information by indicating alternative hierarchies and other relationships which cut across the classified arrangement. The thesaurus also controls word forms and synonyms and acts as the alphabetical index to the class numbers. The resulting tool is multipurpose, as easily applicable to shelf arrangement and conventional classified card catalogues as to co‐ordinate indexing and computerized retrieval systems. The reasons are given for modifying certain traditional facet techniques, including the choice of traditional disciplines for main classes, the lack of a ‘built‐in’ preferred order, and the me, in certain instances, of enumeration rather than synthesis to express multi‐term concepts. Methods of application of the Thesaurofacet in pre‐coordinate and post‐coordinate systems are discussed and a brief account is given of the techniques employed in its compilation.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to present the concept and design methodology for unified, LCL interfacing circuit intended for a high power, modular active power filtering system. The paper aims to contain simulations and selected measurements of an industry applied system.
Design/methodology/approach
The design methodology of unified LCL circuit is based on an analytical model of the system and practical requirements for an active power filter. The stability of the system is confirmed by using poles of discrete transmittance of the close loop system.
Findings
The paper reveals the topology and design methodology of the unified LCL circuit for a high power, modular active power filtering system. The circuit permits zero current ripples, high dynamics of compensating currents, and full scalability of the system.
Practical implications
The practical implications of this paper are in the industrial applications of high power, modular active filtering system.
Originality/value
The topology of unified LCL filter and its design methodology for a modular active power filtering system are of value. It also provides a stability analysis for the system with model‐based predictive current controller.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to develop a cylindrical capacitive sensor that has the advantages of high resolution, small size and designability and can be easily installed on lubricant pipeline to monitor lubricant oil debris.
Design/methodology/approach
A theoretical model of the cylindrical capacitive sensor is presented to analyze several parameters’ effectiveness on the performance of sensor. Numerical simulations are then conducted to determine the optimal parameters for preliminary experiments. Experiments are finally carried out to demonstrate the detectability of developed capacitive sensors.
Findings
It is clear from experimental results that the developed capacitive sensor can monitor the debris in lubricant oil well, and the capacitance values increase almost linearly when the number and size of debris increase.
Research limitations/implications
There is lot of further work to do to apply the presented method into the application. Especially, it is necessary to consider several factors’ influence on monitoring results. These factors include the flow rate of the lubricant oil, the temperature, the debris distribution and the vibration. Moreover, future work should consider the influence of the oil degradation to the capacitance change and other contaminations (e.g. water and dust).
Practical implications
This work conducts a feasibility study on application of capacitive sensing principle for detecting debris in aero engine lubricant oil.
Originality/value
The novelty of the presented capacitance sensor can be summarized into two aspects. One is that the sensor structure is simple and characterized by two coaxial cylinders as electrodes, while conventional capacitive sensors are composed of two parallel plates as electrodes. The other is that sensing mechanism and physical model of the presented sensor is verified and validated by the simulation and experiment.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to empirically investigate the mechanisms through which absorptive capacity (AC), trust and information systems jointly influence product innovation.
Design/methodology/approach
This study proposes a research model to examine the mediating role of AC on the impacts of trust and information systems on product innovation and the moderating roles of trust and information systems on the relationship between AC and product innovation. The hypotheses are empirically tested using regression and bootstrapping methods and data collected from 276 manufacturing firms in China.
Findings
This study finds that trust and information systems positively affect product innovation and the effects are fully mediated by AC. AC also significantly enhances product innovation, and the effect is amplified by trust as well as information systems. In addition, the results show that trust and information systems improve AC both individually and interactively.
Originality/value
The findings extend existing knowledge on the antecedents of AC and the contingent conditions under which a manufacturer’s AC is more effective than that of its rivals. The results also clarify the mechanisms through which trust and information systems improve product innovation. This study provides insights into the complex relationships among a manufacturer’s sociotechnical systems, knowledge management processes and new product development, and reveals how to design organisational systems to fully capitalise the value of AC on product innovation.
