Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to provide an in-depth understanding about the indoor-orbital electrical inspection robot, which is useful for motivating the further investigation on the inspection of electrical equipment. Currently, electric energy has a strong correlation with the economic development of the country. Intelligent substations play an important role in the transmission and distribution of the electricity; the maintenance of the substation has attracted intensive attention due to the requirement of reliability and safety. The indoor-orbital electrical inspection robot has increasingly become the main tool to realize the unmanned. Hence, a systematic review is conducted systematically reviewing the current technical status of the indoor-orbital electrical inspection robot and discuss the existed problems.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, the most essential achievements in the field of indoor-orbital electrical inspection robots were reported to present the current status, and the mechanical structures and key inspective technologies were also discussed.

Findings

Four recommendations are provided from the analyzed review, which have made constructive comments on the overall structural design, functionality, intelligence and future development direction of the indoor-orbital electrical inspection robot, respectively.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first systematic review study on indoor-orbital electrical inspection robots; it fills the theoretical gap and proffers design ideas and directions for the development of the indoor-orbital electrical inspection robot.

Abstract

Purpose

This article is aims to inform aircraft propulsion system designers of the implications which fundamental power distribution design assumptions have on the effectiveness and viability of turboelectric distributed propulsion (TeDP) systems. Improvements and challenges associated with selecting alternating or direct current for normal- and superconducting distribution systems are presented. Additionally, for superconducting systems, the benefits of bi-polar DC distribution are discussed, as well as the implications of operating voltage on the mass and efficiency of TeDP grid components.

Design/methodology/approach

The approach to this paper selects several high-level fundamental configuration decisions, which must be made, and it qualitatively discusses potential implications of these decisions.

Findings

Near term TeDP architectures which employ conventionally conducting systems may benefit from alternating current (AC) distribution concepts to eliminate the mass and losses associated with power conversion. Farther term TeDP concepts which employ superconducting technologies may benefit from direct current (DC) distribution to reduce the cryocooling requirements stemming from AC conduction losses. Selecting the operating voltage for superconducting concepts requires a divergence from the present day criteria employed with terrestrial superconducting transmission systems.

Practical implications

The criteria presented in the paper will assist in the early conceptual architecting of TeDP systems.

Originality/value

The governing principles behind the configuration of multi-MW airborne electrical microgrid systems are presently immature. This paper represents a unique look and the motivating principles behind fundamental electrical configuration decisions in the context of TeDP.

Abstract

Purpose

Using a case study for electrical power equipment, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the importance of dependence between series-connected system components in maintenance decisions.

Design/methodology/approach

A continuous-time Markov decision model is formulated to find a minimum cost maintenance policy for a circuit breaker as an independent component while considering a downstream transformer as a dependent component. Maintenance of the dependent component is included implicitly in terms of the costs associated with certain state-action pairs. For policy and cost comparisons, a separate model is also formulated that considers only the circuit breaker as the independent component. After uniformizing the continuous-time models to discrete time, standard methods are used to solve for the average-cost-optimal policies of each model.

Findings

The optimal maintenance policy and its cost differ significantly depending on whether or not the dependent component is considered.

Research limitations/implications

Data used are from manufacturer databases; additional model validation could be conducted if applied to an electric utility asset fleet within their generation, transmission, and/or distribution system. This model and methodology are already being applied in other contexts such as industrial machinery and equipment, jet engines, amusement park rides, etc.

Practical implications

The outcome of this model can be utilized by asset and operations managers to make maintenance decisions based on prediction rather than more traditional time- or condition-based maintenance methodologies. This model is being developed for use as a module in a larger maintenance information system, specifically linking condition monitor data from the field to a predictive maintenance model. Similar methods are being applied to other applications outside the electrical equipment case detailed herein.

Originality/value

This model provides a structured approach for managers to decide how to best allocate their resources across a network of inter-connected equipment. Work in this area has not fully considered the importance of dependency on systems maintenance, particularly in applications with highly variable repair and replacement costs.

This study proposes targeted modernization of the Department of Defense (DoD's) Joint Forces Ammunition Logistics information system by implementing the optimized innovative information technology open architecture design and integrating Radio Frequency Identification Device data technologies and real-time optimization and control mechanisms as the critical technology components of the solution. The innovative information technology, which pursues the focused logistics, will be deployed in 36 months at the estimated cost of $568 million in constant dollars. We estimate that the Systems, Applications, Products (SAP)-based enterprise integration solution that the Army currently pursues will cost another $1.5 billion through the year 2014; however, it is unlikely to deliver the intended technical capabilities.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to explore the competitive source of Chinese firms in an industrial sector of complex product systems. It helps to reveal the organizational innovation developed by Chinese firms in coping with international competition and technological challenges.

Design/methodology/approach

The study uses a qualitative method of research. The evidences are mainly collected through interviews, field observation and document analysis.

Findings

A pattern of engineer-centered organization is the source of competitiveness of Nanrui (NR) Electric (NREC) in this study. The firm equips its front project teams, and now its overseas branches with developmental human resources and authorizes them the power of decision-making to leverage R&D projects. It is an emerging challenge to the traditional multi-national companies (MNC) pattern, and enables the Chinese firms to build their capabilities on context-based knowledge.

Research limitations/implications

As a single-case study paper, there are limitations about the external validity of its argument. Through the in-depth discussion of the NREC case, this paper aims to generate some clues for future study in the relevant academic community, which can be a useful step to formal theorizing and modeling. That is why the authors develop the paper on a single case. As future directions of research, comparative studies covering more cases not only within the power system control and protection industry but also among different complex technology products industrial sectors are really needed.

Practical implications

For innovative firms from developing countries like China, they need to develop institutional arrangements to incentivize engineers in the frontline, which may help them to build competence upon successful interaction with customers. During the era of globalization, such a pattern may generate special competitiveness over giant multi-nationals or global production networks (GPNs).

Originality/value

The research provides an instructive case on the Chinese rise in industrial sectors of complex product systems. Its findings can not only provide enlightenment for industrial catch-up in developing countries through organizational innovation but also help to initiate a reconsideration of the traditional theorizing of MNC and GPN.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to review cotemporary maintenance programs and analyze factory production data for an SF6 gas filled circuit breaker population. Various maintenance techniques and studies are reviewed to understand the reliability of circuit breaker models and the impact manufacturing can have on long term maintenance considerations.

Design/methodology/approach

Production and field event data were analyzed using statistical analysis tools. The population data were formatted so that a recurrent event analysis could be conducted to establish the mean cumulative function (MCF) by model and product family (class). Average Field Two‐year Recorded Event Rate (AFTRER) is introduced and compared to commonly used Field Incident Rate (FIR) and Mean‐Time between Failure (MTBF) measures.

Findings

Common managerial operating questions can be answered as exhibited for the provided circuit breaker population. This includes the longevity of field issues, the anticipated life cycle of a model or class, and AFTRER for models or classes of interest. These statistical analysis tools are used to make critical production quality and asset management observations and aid in decision‐making.

Research limitations/implications

Due to limitations in existing database systems, the cost of events and explanatory variables related to event rates were not included in the analyses. There remains much work to be done in terms of the installation and retro‐fitting of breakers with conditions monitors in the field.

Practical implications

A framework to analyze maintenance data from fleet of similar assets using recurrent event data analysis is provided. The methods illustrated here would be useful for quality and asset managers to make operating decisions. This includes resource allocation decisions across a network of equipment.

Social implications

Data analyzed are for power circuit breakers which are a critical element in the operation and reliability of the US power grid.

Originality/value

Using recurrent event data analysis to review and develop solutions to production quality and asset management problems including a comparison of AFTRER to FIR and MTBF measures.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this paper was to study the initial corrosion behavior of copper in the substations of Zhanjiang and Zhuhai.

Design/methodology/approach

The copper exposed at the substation of Guangdong coastal region in southern China for up to 12 months. The rust layer formed on the copper has been examined by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray energy spectrum, X-ray diffraction and electrochemical polarization techniques.

Findings

The corrosion weight loss of copper at Zhanjiang exposure site is a little more serious than that at Zhuhai exposure site in every exposure period. The corrosion products of copper have different changes in color and composition at the two exposure sites. The tensile strength of copper has a slight decrease after one-year exposure.

Originality/value

The atmospheric exposure experiments of copper in the substations of Zhanjiang and Zhuhai have been adopted for the first time. The corrosion behavior of copper was investigated, and it can provide reference for material selection of the substation.
