Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to find out how to model the effect of mechanical stresses on the magnetic properties of electrical steel used in electromagnetic devices and especially in electrical machines. Further, the effect of these stresses on the operation of the machines should be studied.

Design/methodology/approach

The constitutive equation of the electrical steel is usually modeled as a non linear relation between the magnetic flux density and the magnetic field strength. In this research, this constitutive equation is developed to account for the mechanical stresses through a parametric relationship, the parameters of which are estimated from measurements. Further, the constitutive equation is used in a magnetomechanically coupled numerical simulation of an induction machine.

Findings

The mechanical stresses degrade the properties of the electrical steel and increase the magnetization current in electrical machines. This leads to a decrease in the efficiency of these machines.

Research limitations/implications

The effect of mechanical stresses is studied from the point of view of magnetization properties. This work does not model the effect of stresses on the specific losses of the material. Such a research is still going on.

Originality/value

The effect of mechanical stress on the magnetic properties of the materials used in electrical machines is modeled in an easy and original way, which allow for its application in numerical simulation and analysis of these machines.

The purpose of this paper is to develop and systemize the 3D finite element (FE) description of electromagnetic field in electrical machines.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop and systemize the 3D finite element (FE) description of electromagnetic field in electrical machines.

Design/methodology/approach

3D FE models of electrical machines are considered. The model consists of FE equations for the magnetic field, equations describing eddy currents and equations, which describe the currents in the machine windings. The FE equations are further coupled by the electromagnetic torque to the differential equation of motion. In the presented field‐circuit model, the flux linkages with the windings are expressed by two components. Attention is paid to the description of machine winding. Both scalar and vector potential formulations are analysed. The FE equations are derived by using the notation of circuit theory. The methods of movement simulation and torque calculation in FE models are discussed.

Findings

Proposed circuit description of electromagnetic field in electrical machines conforms to the applied method of electric and magnetic circuit analysis. The advantage of the presented description is that the equations of field model can be easy associated with the other equations of the electric drive system.

Originality/value

The applied analogies between the FE formulation and the equivalent magnetic and electric network models help formulate efficient field models of electrical machines. The developed models after coupling to the models of supply and control system can be successfully used in the analysis and design electric drives.

Abstract

Purpose

The thermal modelling of an electrical machine is difficult because the thermal behavior depends on its geometry, the used materials and its manufacturing process. In the paper, such a thermal model is used during the sizing process by optimization of a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV). This paper aims to deal with the sensitivities of thermal parameters on temperatures inside the electrical machine to allow the assessment of the influence of thermal parameters that are hard to assess.

Design/methodology/approach

A sensitivity analysis by Sobol indices is used to assess the sensitivities of the thermal parameters on electrical machine temperatures. As the optimization process needs fast computations, a lumped parameter thermal network (LPTN) is proposed for the thermal modelling of the machine, because of its fastness. This is also useful for the Sobol method that needs too many calls to this thermal model. This model is also used in a global model of a hybrid vehicle.

Findings

The difficulty is the thermal modelling of the machine on the validity domain of the sizing problem. The Sobol indices allow to find where a modelling effort has to be carried out.

Research limitations/implications

The Sobol indices have a significant value according to the number of calls of the model and their type (first-order, total, etc.). Therefore, the quality of the thermal sensitivity analysis is a compromise between computation times and modelling accuracy.

Practical implications

Thermal modelling of an electrical machine in a sizing process by optimization.

Originality/value

The use of Sobol indices for the sensitivity analysis of the thermal parameters of an electrical machine.

– The purpose is to implement and compare different approaches for modelling the magnetostriction phenomenon in iron sheet used in rotating electrical machines.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose is to implement and compare different approaches for modelling the magnetostriction phenomenon in iron sheet used in rotating electrical machines.

Design/methodology/approach

In the force-based approach, the magnetostriction is modelled as a set of equivalent forces, which produce the same deformation of the material as the magnetostriction strains. These forces among other magnetic forces are computed from the solution of the finite element (FE) field computation and used as loads for the displacement-based mechanical FE analysis. In the strain-based approach, the equivalent magnetostrictive forces are not needed and an energy-based model is used to define magnetomechanically coupled constitutive equations of the material. These equations are then space-discretised and solved with the FE method for the magnetic field and the displacements.

Findings

It is found that the equivalent forces method can reproduce the displacements and strains of the structure but it results in erroneous stress states. The energy-based method has the ability to reproduce both the stress and strains correctly; thus enabling the analysis of stress-dependent quantities such as the iron losses and the magnetostriction itself.

Research limitations/implications

The investigated methods do not account for hysteresis and other dynamic effects. They also require long computation times. With the available computing resources, the computation time does not present any problem as far as they are not used in everyday design procedures but the modelling of dynamic effect needs to be elaborated.

Originality/value

The developed and implemented methods are verified with measurements and simulation experiments and applied to as complex structure as an electrical machine. The problems related to the different approaches are investigated and explained through simulations.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate an alternative simplified analytical approach for the design of electric machines. Numerical-based finite element method (FEM) is a powerful tool for accurate modelling and electromagnetic performance analysis of electric machines. However, computational complexity, magnetic saturation, complex stator structure and time consumption compel researchers to adopt alternate analytical model for initial design of electric machine especially flux switching machines (FSMs).

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, simplified lumped parameter magnetic equivalent circuit (LPMEC) model is presented for newly developed segmented PM consequent pole flux switching machine (SPMCPFSM). LPMEC model accounts influence of all machine parts for quarter of machine which helps to reduce computational complexity, computational time and drive storage without affecting overall accuracy. Furthermore, inductance calculation is performed in the rotor and stator frame of reference for accurate estimation of the self-inductance, mutual inductance and dq-axis inductance profile using park transformation.

Findings

The developed LPMEC model is validated with corresponding FEA using JMAG Commercial FEA Package v. 18.1 which shows good agreement with accuracy of ∼98.23%, and park transformation precisely estimates the inductance profile in rotor and stator frame of reference.

Practical implications

The model is developed for high-speed brushless AC applications.

Originality/value

The proposed SPMCPFSM enhance electromagnetic performance owing to partitioned PMs configuration which make it different than conventional designs. Moreover, the developed LPMEC model reduces computational time by solving quarter of machine.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to reviewed analytical methodologies, i.e. lumped parameter magnetic equivalent circuit (LPMEC), magnetic co-energy (MCE), Laplace equations (LE), Maxwell stress tensor (MST) method and sub-domain modelling for design of segmented PM(SPM) consequent pole flux switching machine (SPMCPFSM). Electric machines, especially flux switching machines (FSMs), are accurately modeled using numerical-based finite element analysis (FEA) tools; however, despite of expensive hardware setup, repeated iterative process, complex stator design and permanent magnet (PM) non-linear behavior increases computational time and complexity.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper reviews various alternate analytical methodologies for electromagnetic performance calculation. In above-mentioned analytical methodologies, no-load phase flux linkage is performed using LPMEC, magnetic co-energy for cogging torque, LE for magnetic flux density (MFD) components, i.e. radial and tangential and MST for instantaneous torque. Sub-domain model solves electromagnetic performance, i.e. MFD and torque behaviour.

Findings

The reviewed analytical methodologies are validated with globally accepted FEA using JMAG Commercial FEA Package v. 18.1 which shows good agreement with accuracy. In comparison of analytical methodologies, analysis reveals that sub-domain model not only get rid of multiples techniques for validation purpose but also provide better results by accounting influence of all machine parts which helps to reduce computational complexity, computational time and drive storage with overall accuracy of ∼99%. Furthermore, authors are confident to recommend sub-domain model for initial design stage of SPMCPFSM when higher accuracy and low computational cost are primal requirements.

Practical implications

The model is developed for high-speed brushless AC applications.

Originality/value

The SPMCPFSM enhances electromagnetic performance owing to segmented PMs configuration which makes it different than conventional designs. Moreover, developed analytical methodologies for SPMCPFSM reduce computational time compared with that of FEA.

The purpose of this paper is to find out how to model iron losses in electrical machines accurately and efficiently.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to find out how to model iron losses in electrical machines accurately and efficiently.

Design/methodology/approach

The starting point was a previously developed vector hysteresis model that was designed and incorporated into the 2D time‐stepping finite‐element (FE) simulation of induction machines. The developed approach here is a decoupling between the vector hysteresis model and the 2D FE model of the machine. The huge time consumption of the incorporated hysteresis model required some new approach to make the model computationally efficient. This is dealt with through an a posteriori use of the vector hysteresis model.

Findings

In this research, it was found that the vector hysteresis model, although used in an a posteriori scheme is able to accurately predict the iron losses as far as these losses are small enough not to affect the other operation characteristics of the machine.

Research limitations/implications

The research methods reported in this paper deal mainly with induction machines. The methods should be applied for transient operations of the induction machines as well as for other types of machines. The fact that the iron losses do not affect very much the operation characteristics of the machine is based on the fact that the air gap field plays a major role in these machines. The method cannot be applied to other magnetic devices where the iron losses are the main loss component.

Originality/value

The paper is of practical value for designers of electrical machines, who use FE programs. The methods presented here allow them to use a different FE package to simulate the machine and own routines (based on the presented methods) to predict the iron losses without loss of accuracy and in a reasonably short time.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to create an extended equivalent circuit model for a compound DC motor, consisting completely of electrical parameters and quantities.

Design/methodology/approach

The dynamic model of the compound DC motor is obtained by establishing the voltage equations for the armature and excitation circuit and the mechanical equation for the mechanical part. The mechanical parameters in the dynamic model are converted into electrical parameters with an electrical circuit proposed for the mechanical part. By combining the armature and excitation circuits with the electrical circuit created for the mechanical part, the extended equivalent circuit model of the compound DC motor is obtained. Because the proposed extended equivalent model is completely an electrical circuit, simulations can be made in the circuit simulation programme. Simulations of the proposed compound DC motor circuit were carried out, and the accuracy of the proposed circuit was verified by performing experimental studies with an existing compound motor.

Findings

When comparing speed and current profiles in experiments and simulations, it is seen that compound DC motor can be modelled with the proposed equivalent circuit including completely electrical elements in a simulation programme for the circuits. The results show that the proposed equivalent circuit satisfies the dynamic model of the compound motor.

Originality/value

In DC machine models, armature and excitation circuits are given as an electrical circuit, and mechanical part of the machine is modelled by only mechanical equations. The originality of this study is converting the dynamic model of an electrical machine consisting of electrical and mechanical equations into a completely electrical circuit. With the proposed method, the dynamic model of many motors can be converted into a completely electrical circuit. In this way, motors can be simulated as an electrical circuit in simulation programmes for the circuits, and the dynamic behaviour of motors can be obtained.
