Abstract

Purpose

Given the limited understanding of the process of transgenerational entrepreneurship and that knowledge is a fundamental antecedent of entrepreneurial endeavors, this study aims to shed light on how entrepreneurial families (EFs) nurture entrepreneurship across generations, which knowledge is required within the EF to spur new entrepreneurial activities, and how is this knowledge acquired.

Design/methodology/approach

Considering the paucity of empirical evidence on the topic under investigation and the related exploratory nature of this study, the authors adopted a qualitative approach by conducting a case study on an Italian wine-making family business.

Findings

The case analysis reveals that EF members are required to acquire different types of knowledge at different generational stages to spur new entrepreneurial activities, specifically technical knowledge in the second generation and business knowledge in the third generation. Moreover, the data analysis shows two mechanisms, namely, trust among generations and role separation, that, during both generational transitions, enabled and empowered the younger generations to exploit their knowledge to explore entrepreneurial opportunities and engage in new entrepreneurial activities.

Originality/value

This study provides novel insights into the role of knowledge in transgenerational entrepreneurship, particularly looking at knowledge acquired by EF members across generations. Accordingly, this research contributes to the literature streams of transgenerational entrepreneurship, knowledge management in family businesses and broader knowledge management research.

Abstract

Purpose

In the new global economy, environmental degradation is still among the crucial struggles braving policymakers. The intention of the current analysis, therefore, is to investigate the asymmetric impact of energy use, trade openness, population changes and urbanization, on the ecological footprint (EF) in four ASEAN countries by using time span data extending from 1972 to 2018.

Design/methodology/approach

The stationarity of the variables was first demonstrated by using a quantile autoregression unit root test. Then the cointegration relationship among quantiles was verified. In the third step, this study investigated the pattern of causality in quantiles which allowed them to model any locational asymmetry in such a relationship. In the final part of the paper, the asymmetric quantile approaches the methods adopted to address the ways in which the considered variables impacted on the EF.

Findings

The outcomes demonstrated that the estimated coefficient of the variables was generally found significant and in line with the expected impact sign. Likewise, locational asymmetry was detected from the fact that the considered variables at the upper tails did not operate in the same way as those in the lower ones. In this case, the results suggest that a rise in energy consumption, as well as a negative shock to economic growth and/or trade openness, all diminish environmental quality. In contrast, promoting economic growth, a positive shock to trade openness, and human capital reduce environmental degradation.

Originality/value

As far as is known, the current study among the early attempt to explore the asymmetric impact of trade openness, energy use, population changes and urbanization, on the EF in the ASEAN countries.

Abstract

Purpose

Given that 45% of new businesses fail in their first five years (US Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2020), individuals often observe others' entrepreneurial failures (EFs) in their vicinity. The purpose of this paper is to review the effects of vicarious EFs on individuals by proposing both entrepreneurial self-efficacy and entrepreneurial identity aspiration as mediators, which are widely studied proximal antecedents of entrepreneurial intent.

Design/methodology/approach

Using structural equation modeling, the authors empirically test survey data collected from 10,020 college students across 46 colleges or universities in Brazil. The hypothesized model examines the mediating effects of vicarious EFs on individuals' entrepreneurial intent via entrepreneurial self-efficacy and entrepreneurial identity aspiration.

Findings

The findings confirm that vicarious EFs negatively affect one's entrepreneurial self-efficacy and that entrepreneurial self-efficacy mediates the effect of vicarious EFs on one's entrepreneurial intent. On the other hand, vicarious EFs positively affect one's entrepreneurial identity aspiration, and entrepreneurial identity aspiration mediates the effect of vicarious failures on entrepreneurial intent.

Originality/value

The entrepreneurship literature focuses mainly on the consequences of EF on those entrepreneurs who have experienced failure. However, there is a lack of knowledge regarding how that failure impacts others in its vicinity. This study provides new insight into the effects of vicarious EFs in facilitating individuals' entrepreneurial intent and presents theoretical and practical implications to promote greater levels of entrepreneurial intent in individuals.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper presents an overview of embedded finance. It identifies the applications, use case examples, benefits and challenges of embedded finance. The paper also analyzes global interest in embedded finance and compares it with interest in related finance concepts such as open finance, open banking, decentralized finance, financial innovation, Fintech and digital finance.

Design/methodology/approach

Granger causality test and two-stage least square regression were used to assess interest over time in embedded finance.

Findings

The empirical result show that interest in embedded finance increased significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic. The United States, the United Kingdom and India witnessed the highest interest in embedded finance compared to other countries. There is bi-directional Granger causality between interest in information about embedded finance and interest in information about financial innovation. There is uni-directional Granger causality between interest in information about embedded finance and interest in information about digital finance and open finance. The findings also reveal that interest in decentralized finance and open finance are significant determinants of interest in embedded finance. On the other hand, interest in embedded finance is a significant determinant of interest in digital finance, decentralized finance, Fintech and open banking. Also, interest in embedded finance is significantly correlated with interest in digital finance, decentralized finance, open banking and Fintech.

Originality/value

Presently, there is little academic interest in embedded finance despite the fact that embedded finance is part of the on-going digital finance revolution. This paper fills this gap in the literature by assessing the benefits, use case, challenges of embedded finance.

Abstract

Purpose

Given the increased emphasis on embedding the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) in the curriculum, research, engagement activities and operations of higher education institutions, this comparative study aims to replicate an earlier international study of Turnaround Leadership for Sustainability in Higher Education (TLSHE) in the unique context of Malaysia and Japan. This paper also presents a case for closer focus on developing Education for Sustainability (EfS) leaders in institutions of higher learning.

Design/methodology/approach

This study is a quantitative comparative research. The authors collected data for EfS-related variables from lecturers affiliated with Malaysian and Japanese public and private universities. Building on the data and results from the TLSHE study, this study made a series of within- and between-sample descriptive comparisons from different angles and levels. To generalize the findings, this study used gender and experience outside higher education as control variables and compared the academics from the Malaysian and the Japanese institutions through the path modeling framework.

Findings

The comparisons showed that except for two domains, namely, contextual factors influencing EfS leadership and the EfS leadership development approaches, the means of all other domains based on the data collected from the Malaysian sample were the highest, followed by means from the international TLSHE sample, and finally the means from the Japanese sample. This study also observed that transparency, engagement with EfS initiatives at different levels, passion for teaching and learning, and creative and lateral thinking were among the top indicators. The inferential tests revealed significant differences between the academics from Japan and Malaysia as well.

Practical implications

The findings of the analyses can be used to ensure that the selection and development of EfS leaders (in this case, lecturers who may be formal or informal EfS leaders), not just at the central but at the local level in the distinctive context of Japan and Malaysia, focus on what counts and the good ideas embodied in the 17 UN SDGs are actually put into practice. This study has also highlighted the policy implications with respect to the gender and the previous work experience of lecturers outside higher education sector in more detail.

Originality/value

This study compares the perceptions of two samples of academics from Asian countries with the perceptions of the international TLSHE sampled EfS leaders in terms of EfS leadership-related issues and therefore, increases the awareness of academic community in this regard. It also highlights the role of lecturers (e.g. professors) as intellectual academic leaders in achieving SDGs. Moreover, this study shows that lecturers’ gender and previous work experience outside higher education should be considered when developing and implementing policies on EfS leadership.

Abstract

Purpose

Engaging students in environmental citizenship to promote education for sustainability (EfS) as an explicit goal of academic courses is not common, notwithstanding wide consensus on its importance. Collaborative learning has rarely been investigated using action research methods in the context of environmental citizenship in higher education; the purpose of this study is to fill the gap.

Design/methodology/approach

Adopting Bandura's (2012) theory of self-efficacy and collective efficacy, this study explores how collaborative learning, used throughout an action research-based course, encouraged students’ efficacy to implement environmental citizenship in their communities. Data were collected through multiple sources: students’ written reflections, instructors’ reflective journals and continuous discussions, interviews with students and different documents (course syllabi, lesson plans and students' scientific posters).

Findings

The findings of this study indicate that the authors succeeded in creating an appropriate social academic setting for the students to become acquainted with each other and to share ideas, successes and challenges in an accepting atmosphere, which proved beneficial to developing their self-confidence to promote EfS in practice. Adopting collaborative learning in the context of environmental citizenship also increased students' self-efficacy and collective efficacy. Self-efficacy was strengthened in the four sources discussed by Bandura (2012): mastery experiences, social modeling, social persuasion and emotional states. Collective efficacy was developed both in the academic and practical domains.

Originality/value

The findings of this study suggest that collaborative learning could serve as a powerful way to promote EfS in higher education, especially in teacher education. This contribution was achieved through integrating academic and practical knowledge foundations, which are required to implement environmental citizenship successfully, supporting learners’ initial steps towards becoming change agents in the society.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the learning effects of entrepreneurial failure (EF) among micro-women entrepreneurship in Accra.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a qualitative research method, purposive sampling was used to identify 64 micro-women entrepreneurs, and data was collected using interviews.

Findings

Linked to the experiential learning theory, the study found that consequences of EF provide an entrepreneurial learning platform that influences micro-women entrepreneurs to acquire new skills and knowledge for their entrepreneurial development, incurred costs that negatively affect operations, acquired no knowledge or take a decision to opt-out of entrepreneurship as a carrier.

Research limitations/implications

The study was based on a relatively small sample size of 64 participants which made it difficult to generalize the findings despite the benefits of the research methods adopted in the study.

Originality/value

The study contributed to the EF literature with micro-women entrepreneurs in an African context. It highlights the possible additional learning consequences of EF which are being scared of entrepreneurial venturing as a result of their failure. This negatively impacts the desire to engage in entrepreneurship as a future career. The identification of irrelevant learning consequences of EF, suggests that the existing experiential learning theory may need to be revised to further enhance its applicability in micro-women entrepreneurship in different cultural contexts, as not all experiences result in learning.

Abstract

Purpose

In this study, the authors examine how economic freedom mediates the impact of foreign direct investment (FDI) on economic growth in Africa.

Design/methodology/approach

By using data from 41 countries over the period 2000–2017, the authors invoke Seo and Shin's (2016) sample splitting approach while relying on the recently developed Seo et al.'s (2019) computationally robust bootstrap algorithm to achieve the purpose of this study.

Findings

The authors find evidence of economic freedom threshold that bifurcates the link between FDI and economic growth in Africa. More precisely, FDI does not improve overall economic growth for African countries whose economic freedom index is below the estimated threshold while significantly spurring growth for African countries with economic freedom above this threshold.

Practical implications

African countries need to strive towards improving their level of economic freedom through the strengthening of rule of law, reducing government size, promoting regulatory efficiency and further opening of the goods and capital markets.

Originality/value

The association between FDI and economic growth has been well documented. While the positive theoretical postulations are almost conclusive, empirical literature on the precise effect of FDI remains contentious and far from being settled. What is missing in the existing literature in Africa is whether countries' level of economic freedom mediates how FDI explains the variations in economic growth across African countries. The authors fill this research gap.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to report strategies towards a green campus project at Politecnico di Torino University, a 33,000-students Italian higher education institution (HEI), and estimate the avoided ecological footprint (EF) of different scenarios accounted for open spaces.

Design/methodology/approach

A consumption-based study has been developed to analyse the current EF of the main campus site. Data were collected from different departments and administrative units to identify the measure of the pressure exerted by the campus activities on the ecosystem. Then, possible scenarios were accounted for open spaces along five different design layers: energy, water, landscape, food and mobility. Acting on the spaces by means of biophilic design and user-driven design requires complex considerations on university’s anticipated future needs and a wide-ranging evaluation of the most appropriate pathways forward according to all university stakeholders, far beyond the mere accounting of avoided EF.

Findings

A reduction of the 21 per cent of the current EF can be achieved through the solutions envisaged in the green campus project along the open space layers. Moreover, universities have the opportunity to not only improve the sustainability of their facilities but also demonstrate how the built environment can be designed to benefit both the environment and the occupants.

Research limitations/implications

The acknowledgement of predicted behavioural change effects is a question left open to further researchers on methods and indicators for social impact accounting and reporting in truly sustainable university campuses.

Originality/value

This is the first research that estimates the EF of an Italian HEI. The research represents also an innovative approach integrating the EF reduction scenarios in the design process of the new masterplan of open spaces, trying to identify the connection between environmental impact reduction and improvement in users’ perception.
