Abstract

This article features a descriptive proposal that examines the different conceptual dimensions of knowledge (basically the epistemological, ontological, systemic and strategic dimensions) that are involved in the emerging strategic process of organizations. Included in this process are aspects of information, complexity and imagination that make up the spirals of knowledge. In this study we aim to shed light on knowledge management in strategy‐making so that the different categories of knowledge may emerge and develop their potential within an organization and interact among each other. The goal is to create sustainable competitive advantages or essential competencies that help a business to succeed. Considering a constructionist approach to knowledge – specifically, the theory of knowledge creation developed by Nonaka and Takeuchi – we conclude that the formation of the strategy is a double‐loop knowledge creating process. Finally, we outline some of the main practical implications of our position.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to analyse design management as a dynamic capability.

Design/methodology/approach

This is a systematic review with paper searches conducted on the ISI Web of Science database’s Social Sciences Citation Index, complemented by a historiographical analysis developed using the HistCite software.

Findings

The analysis of paper allowed for the identification of three processes that, if integrated, construct design management as a dynamic capability, namely, design learning, design coordination and design skills. Design learning corresponds to the skill of acquiring and absorbing knowledge and practices and spreading them throughout the whole organisation, and design coordination corresponds to the capability to coordinate the activities and practices that are necessary for good design. Finally, design skills comprise a set of techniques and knowledge that generate synergy, creativity and innovation.

Practical implications

This perspective suggests a new concept of design management that allows organisations to achieve a competitive advantage in environments of rapid technological change.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the literature on design management as a dynamic capability. Another contribution is that design management presents itself as an important dynamic that is capable of creating and maintaining a competitive edge through its potential to generate innovation and creativity and to make firms more flexible and dynamic.

Abstract

This paper aims to find out the “state of the art” of research into tourism enterprises in Spain and the work carried out over the last thirty years. The methodology proposed to make this assessment is an analysis based on the research programmes, theoretical approaches and basic principles which make up the body of current Business Economics teaching. Once this has been accomplished, the contributions of the selected works — a total of ten — are subsequently analysed. These works reflect the main lines of research followed and take up the characteristic theoretical approaches and conceptual principles that comprise current knowledge of the area, particularly from the most classical perspective.

Abstract

The objective of this work is to determine the relationship between human capital and artisanal innovation. Nowadays, in Tonalá Jalisco, artisanal pieces are produced in an innovative way, either by using ceramic or any variant of the mud technique, but a substantial part of the business is what makes innovative business thinking possible. The Intellectus Model, created by Eduardo Bueno in 2011, is used as a reference, distinguishing intellectual capital in three types of capital. But for the purpose of this study, we have only analyzed the relationship of human capital with respect to artisanal innovation. The study was conducted in 2018 on 73 craft economic units. Using the Pearson chi-square technique and applying the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) program, the qualitative relationship between innovation and human capital was analyzed. The result shows a positive relationship between human capital and innovation.

Abstract

The production of steel pipes with guaranteed external collapse pressure (e.g. high collapse casings for oil wells) requires the implementation of an accurate process control. To develop that process control it is necessary to investigate how different parameters affect the external collapse pressure of the pipes. Experimental/numerical techniques implemented to investigate the collapse behavior of steel pipes are presented. The discussion of the experimental techniques includes the description of the facilities for performing external pressure collapse tests and the description of an imperfections measuring system. The numerical techniques include 2D and 3D finite element models. The effects on the value of the pipes’ external collapse pressure of their shape, residual stresses and material properties are discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to model the strain localization in J2 materials with damage evolution using embedded strong discontinuity modes.

Design/methodology/approach

In this procedure, an heuristic bandwidth scale is adopted to model the damage evolution in the shear bands. The bifurcation triggering conditions and band growth directions are studied for these materials.

Findings

The resulting formulation does not require a specific mesh refinement to model a localization, provides mesh independent results also insensitive to element distortions and allows calibration of the model response using experimental data. The formulation capability is shown embedding the strong discontinuity modes into quadrilateral and higher order elements.

Originality/value

The work described in this paper extends the use of strong discontinuity modes to materials with damage evolution.

Abstract

The rapid and well‐known evolution – considered by many observers to be revolutionary – from industrial society to knowledge society, defined by the importance of knowledge creation processes, is showing the relevance of the social capital of organizations. This study seeks to contribute to the development of this new concept. First, presents the theoretical background of social capital. Second, based on an intellectual capital approach, tests the situation of social capital in some Spanish companies, with a reference to the international landscape. The findings of the research support the convenience of the development of an integral framework for the management of intangibles that create future benefits, considering the relations with several social agents. Concludes by proposing a model of intellectual capital that expressly includes social capital.

A generalized Galerkin technique originally developed by Donea, Belytschko and Smolinski for solving the steady convection—diffusion equation using elements with quadratic interpolation has been modified to extend its application to the case of geometrically distorted 1D and 2D elements. The numerical results indicate that the modified scheme gives accurate results and presents a rather small sensitivity to element distortions.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of the present paper is to shed new light on the interactions among capitals in a model of measurement and management of intellectual capital using the theoretical lens of complexity theory. In particular, attempts to contribute to the exploration of the power of biological metaphors in the study of intellectual capital.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodology adopted in the present paper is case study research. Cases are especially suitable to answering “how” and “why” questions and are well‐suited to generating and building theory in an area where little data or theory exists. Presents the case study of Caja Madrid, a Spanish savings bank in Spain.

Findings

A new framework of analysis is proposed that may help organizations to better picture and understand dynamics of interaction between capitals and elements by defining relationships which explain the creation of wealth through intangibles.

Originality/value

Suggests that complexity theory has the potential to shed new light on the study of intellectual capital in organizations.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present the development of a simulator of oil well drilling processes.

Design/methodology/approach

The simulator incorporates the main variables that are used by drilling engineers in the definition of the drilling processes. The code is useful a priori, in the design of a drilling process, as a tool for comparing different design options and predicting their results and a posteriori of a failure to understand its genesis and therefore provide know-why to improve the drilling techniques.

Findings

The developed finite element simulator uses a co-rotational Bernoulli beam element, an explicit time integration scheme and an explicit contact algorithm. The numerical results show that the simulator is stable and provides consistent solutions.

Practical implications

During the drilling of oil wells, the fatigue damage and wear of the drilling column is of utmost concern. To determine the mechanical behavior of the drilling column standard simplified analyses are usually performed using commercially available codes; however, those standard analyses do not include a transient dynamic simulation of the process; hence, it is necessary to develop a specific tool for the detailed dynamic simulation of drilling processes.

Originality/value

A simulator able to perform a description of the drilling process in the time range will be an important contribution to the tools used by drilling engineers.
