Abstract

Purpose

Editorial boards of academic journals represent a key institutional mechanism in the governance and functioning of the academic community. Board members play an important role in knowledge production and development of the discipline. The purpose of this paper is to enquire into the diversity characteristics of boards of accounting journals.

Design/methodology/approach

Drawing on a diversity framework that distinguishes between societal diversity and value of diversity, the paper examines two board characteristics: gender diversity and internationalisation. Moreover, it examines the influence of three journal and two editor characteristics on board diversity and analyses trends over time.

Findings

On gender, overall board trends are consistent with societal diversity and value of diversity: boards reflect the gender profile of senior academics. Further, female representation on boards is broadly consistent across the different journal nationalities; has improved over time; has experienced a convergence in “gender sensitive” sub-disciplines; and is influenced by female editorship. However, inequities appear to be present at the highest level: women appear to be less well represented than men as editors and women also have a lower representation on boards of higher ranked journals than on those of lower ranked journals. On internationalisation, once again, overall trends broadly reflect societal diversity and value at diversity. However, international scholars are less well represented on 4* boards than on 2* and 3* boards and on US boards than on Australian and UK boards. Further, there are signs of weakening US dominance in non-US journals.

Originality/value

Drawing on the diversity framework, this is the first study to comprehensively examine gender diversity and internationalisation of accounting boards.

Abstract

We report with regret the resignation of Miss E. M. R. Ditmas from the editorship of both Aslib Proceedings and the Journal of Documentation. This is the last issue of Aslib Proceedings that will appear under Miss Ditmas's editorship and she will no longer be Managing Editor of the Journal of Documentation after publication of the June 1962 issue. Miss Ditmas, who was Director of Aslib until 1950, is resigning in order to be able to devote more time to her own research work and writing. Aslib would like to record its deep appreciation of the excellent work which Miss Ditmas has done to establish and uphold the standard of both these periodicals since their first appearance.

To provide an outline of an editor's experiences in the early years of publishing IJOPM.

Abstract

Purpose

To provide an outline of an editor's experiences in the early years of publishing IJOPM.

Design/methodology/approach

Provides a brief summary of the author's experiences.

Findings

Being a new journal, it was found that there was insufficient copy, and this was not helped by the limited number of potential authors. However, the objective of increasing the number of issues in a volume was achieved by the publication of an extra issue each year from 1985 to 1993, with papers of quality. Editorship of a journal subject to the scrutiny of academics is a challenging task.

Originality/value

Provides an introduction to the special issue.

Abstract

When I assumed the editorship of The Bottom Line last year, I never dreamed it would be only for three issues. Frankly, three issues is simply a very brief introduction to the editing of a journal. But, of course, I never expected to be changing jobs either! Yet both things have happened. On January 3, 1994, I will become Chief Consultant for School Media Programs for the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, a job that will have me traveling the entire state—one that will make it impossible for me to continue to direct the necessary time and energy into editing a quality publication.
