Abstract

Purpose

The study examines a mediated, moderated process of students' intellectual engagement from optimism, academic self-efficacy and academic burnout.

Design/methodology/approach

Five hundred and twenty-seven participants who completed a self-reported questionnaire were selected using a convenient sampling technique. PLSc was used to test the proposed hypotheses.

Findings

Results showed that optimism positively affects students' intellectual engagement and academic self-efficacy. Additionally, academic self-efficacy correlates positively with students' intellectual engagement and further mediates the relationship between optimism and intellectual engagement. Finally, the moderation effect of academic burnout was positive and non-significant.

Originality/value

This paper is among the first to have tested a model including optimism, academic self-efficacy, intellectual engagement and academic burnout in a university setup from a developing country perspective.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to propose a mediation moderated model to examine the influence of academic reliance on students' intellectual engagement.

Design/methodology/approach

Four hundred and seventy-one respondents who completed a self-reported questionnaire were chosen to participate in the study using a convenient sampling technique. The hypotheses were tested using PLSc.

Findings

Findings from the study reveal academic resilience and academic diligence positively predicts students' intellectual engagement. Academic diligence positively predicts students' intellectual engagement and further mediates the effect of academic resilience on intellectual engagement. Finally, learning support positively predicts intellectual engagement and further moderates the effect of the association between academic resilience and academic diligence on intellectual engagement.

Practical implications

This research shows that higher education administrators must establish effective and efficient policies that integrate students' academic resilience, academic diligence and learning assistance.

Originality/value

This paper is amongst the first to have tested a model including resilience, academic diligence, intellectual engagement and learning support in a university setup from a developing country perspective.

Abstract

Purpose

The study examines a mediated mechanism for enhancing students' engagement i.e. peer, intellectual and academic engagement within a higher education setup via the interaction of hope and mindfulness.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were conveniently collected using self-reported questionnaires from a sample of 542 students. PLSc-SEM was used to test the stated hypotheses.

Findings

Results from the analysis showed hope and mindfulness positively predict student academic, peer and intellectual engagements. Furthermore, mindfulness positively mediates the effect of hope on academic, peer and intellectual engagements.

Practical implications

This study demonstrates that management of higher institutions must develop effective and efficient policies targeted at enhancing students' hope and mindful awareness.

Originality/value

This paper is the first to examine a model involving mindfulness, hope and peer, intellectual and academic engagement.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper investigates the moderating model of servant leadership (SL), customer citizenship behaviour (CCB) and Altruistic Work Value (AWV) among employees of 1-star and 2-star rated family hotels in Ghana.

Design/methodology/approach

Four hundred and fifty-two (452) respondents took part in the study. The respondents were selected using a convenient sampling technique and completed a self-reported questionnaire. Data were analysed using Partial Least Square Based Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM).

Findings

Results of the study reveal that SL positively predicts customers’ Organisational Citizenship Behaviours (OCB). In addition, AWVs (1) directly influence customer OCB and (2) further moderate the nexus of SL and customer OCB.

Practical implications

Management of 1-star and 2-star family hotels should continuously monitor and evaluate employees' AWVs so that such behaviours can be constantly reinforced to retain them within their enterprise.

Originality/value

This paper is one of the pioneers to have tested a model including SL, OCB-C and AWVs in a family hotel context.

Abstract

Purpose

The study investigates the moderating effect of personal resources, including optimism and resilience, on the link between fear of Covid-19 and perceptions of academic safety among university students in Ghana.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 618 students took part in the research by completing an online self-reported questionnaire. The respondents were chosen using a simple random sample method. The data was processed and analysed using IBM SPSS version 24 and SEM-PLS, respectively.

Findings

Results reveal fear of Covid-19 positively influence students' perception of academic safety. Furthermore, both resilience and optimism mitigate the impact of fear of Covid-19 on students' perceptions of academic safety.

Originality/value

This is the first study to examine personal resources as a moderator between fear of Covid-19 and students' perceptions of academic safety. Practical and theoretical implications are added to the text.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper examines the relationships between citizenship fatigue, organisational- and job-based psychological ownership and family management among family hotel employees in Ghana.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 479 workers took part in the study by completing either a self-reported questionnaire or an interviewer-administered questionnaire. The hotels and respondents were selected using purposive and convenience sampling techniques, respectively. IBM SPSS version 21 and partial least squares structural equation model were used to process and analyse the data.

Findings

Citizenship fatigue was found to be a negative predictor of organisational- and job-based psychological ownership. Additionally, job- and organisational-based psychological ownership were positively predicted by family management. Furthermore, family management positively moderates the relation between citizenship fatigue and organisational- and job-based psychological ownership.

Originality/value

This study appears to be one of the first to have investigated a model linking family management, citizenship fatigue and psychological ownership in the family hotel context.

This paper examines the mediating process of enhancing employees' psychological ownership among family hotel employees.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper examines the mediating process of enhancing employees' psychological ownership among family hotel employees.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 1,005 employees from 197 budget-to-three-star family hotels took part in the study by completing an either self-reported or interviewer questionnaire. The respondents were selected using a convenient sampling technique. A partial least square structural equation was used to analyse the data.

Findings

Work engagement and organisational performance were shown to significantly predict psychological ownership, except for counterproductive work behaviour. Both counterproductive work behaviour and organisational performance were found to predict psychological ownership. Finally, the relationship between (1) counterproductive work behaviour and psychological ownership and (2) organisational performance and psychological ownership is mediated by work engagement.

Practical implications

Replication of this model in different countries and other work settings is highly recommended for cross validating the reported findings in this study. The study emphasises the need for family hotel owners to create a conducive work environment devoid of conditions that promote counterproductive work behaviour among employees and encourage them to engage in higher productivity.

Originality/value

This study appears to be one of the first to have investigated a model linking counterproductive work behaviour, performance to psychological ownership through work engagement in the family hotel context.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationships between self-esteem (SE), university commitment and organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs) within a higher education setup.

Design/methodology/approach

A convenience sample of 354 students in a three-year higher national diploma awarding technical university in Ghana participated in the study via the completion of self-administered questionnaires. Descriptive statistics and partial least square-based structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) were used to analyze data.

Findings

Path results using a PLS-SEM analysis showed a positive and significant association between SE and OCBs and university commitment among the students. Furthermore, OCBs were found to partially mediate the relationship between SE and university commitment.

Practical implications

The findings of the study provide important implication for management of higher education institutions. Management of higher education institutions must orient academic and non-academic staff to adopt communication strategies that help to improve students’ self-worth and assertiveness. All students should be encouraged to participate in extra-curricular activities in order to build students’ beliefs about themselves and self-confidence.

Originality/value

This paper is one of the first to have tested a model including SE, university commitment and OCBs in a technical university setup from a developing country perspective.
