Abstract
Drawing on my own experiences at the University of California, Santa Barbara as a college professor of radical social change for 31 years who has been focused on the climate crisis for the past 10, I explore the crisis of higher education with respect to this most pressing existential challenge of the twenty-first century and propose various approaches, actions, activities, and projects for both classroom teachers and networks of educators.
These include the UC-CSU NXTerra Knowledge Action Network, the UCSB-developed nearly carbon neutral conference, and engaging students in designing and implementing systemic alternatives outside the classroom in their own communities such as Eco Vista in the 23,000-person community of Isla Vista just adjacent to UC Santa Barbara, among others.
The essay will end with a vision of a new type of university, exemplified in the world-spanning Ecoversities Alliance, and dreamed of in Transition U and Eco Vista U, two prototypes that I have been involved in co-creating with students, staff, faculty and community members in Santa Barbara, California, and in the Transition US movement.

Abstract

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to discuss the notion of carnival laughter in Bakhtin's examination of Rabelais's literary works. The paper suggests that what may be called, after Rabelais, the agélaste ethos, the ethos of the men and women without laughter, remains a strong influence in some domains of critical management studies (CMS) as well as mainstream organization theory.
Design/methodology/approach
The literature review discusses Russian literature theorist Mikhail Bakhtin's analysis of the writings of François Rabelais and related his concept of the agélaste to contemporary social and organization theory.
Findings
Some proponents of CMS praise the critical thinking and the outlook on society established by its foundational writers Adorno, Horkheimer and Marcuse. As a consequence, CMS tends to exclude the sources of joy, laughter and transgression and regard such social and human gestures and events as being frivolous and ephemeral. Therefore, CMS remains trapped within its own sphere of critical thinking and fails to address and understand significant components of everyday life.
Research limitations/implications
The paper suggests that the notion of “critique” needs to be explored within the community of CMS researchers.
Originality/value
Discusses the concept of critique so central for both the CMS tradition of thinking and other domains of management studies in new terms.

This study aims to examine the decisive factors that affect travellers’ intention to visit ecotourism destinations.
Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to examine the decisive factors that affect travellers’ intention to visit ecotourism destinations.
Design/methodology/approach
Convenience sampling method was used to develop a research sample. The research sample includes visitors at eight ecotourism destinations in Vietnam who were randomly approached and agreed to participate in a structured questionnaire survey. The data set consists of 431 valid responses. A multivariate analysis method was used to analyse the data.
Findings
This study finds strong correlations between three factors that are important in determining the Vietnamese travellers’ intention to visit ecotourism locations. These are environmental concern, future time perspective (defined as individual views towards the importance of future time) and eco-destinations image (understood as individual perceptions of an ecotourism place). This study also reports robust associations between eco-destination image, future time perspective and environmental concern.
Practical implications
This study suggests policymakers in an emerging economy such as Vietnam to use efficient regulations on protecting the natural environment in tourism locations while tourism providers and marketers should invest in building eco-image of travel locations. This study also recommends public organisations to encourage greater awareness of the importance of environmental protection through education, propaganda and media as this will foster the demand for ecotourism. Last but not least, this study advises tourism marketers to develop marketing materials emphasising future time perspective and eco-destination images if they wish to promote ecotourism.
Originality/value
This study highlights the influential role of travellers’ future time perspective and eco-destination image in their travel intention. The existing literature does not pay sufficient attention to the impacts that these two considerations have on travellers’ environmental concerns and consequently stimulate their intention to visit ecotourism destinations. This study suggests relevant management strategies for the development of ecotourism in emerging economies.

Abstract
Purpose
The paper aims to study the main managerial factors for evaluating the eco‐cluster approach and to promote their implementation within the environmental industry management.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper includes the authors' observations about the advantages of eco‐clustering, and their practical consideration. The empirical research shows the tendencies for developing an eco‐cluster policy in one of the most economically dynamic regions in Bulgaria: Varna‐Devnya. The study framework was discussed with managers on the basis of the environmental practices of Solvay Sodi, Devnya Cement, and Agropolihim JSC. The authors outline the possible cycle of waste management and emission exchanges in that industrial zone.
Findings
The findings show that the eco‐cluster concept in Bulgaria could be provided on micro‐ and macro‐managerial levels, discussing firm relationships and governmental policy. The principal limitation for generating the findings is the lack of concordance between the governmental interest and the business interests of the TNCs. Three negative factors are important in the implementation of the eco‐clustering concept: lack of information; financial constraints; lack of trust.
Practical implications
Common strategic agreements between TNCs and local authorities provide useful managerial and public implications for eco‐clustering. Second, the analysis outlines essential steps for the managerial behavior for creating eco‐clusters.
Originality/value
The perspectives of the eco‐cluster are studied for the first time in Bulgaria. The investigation gives motivation for a further study of the eco‐clustering approach with the support of the local authorities. The practical steps for managerial and public implications of the eco‐cluster concept as an innovative tool for Bulgarian managers are revealed.

Abstract
Purpose
To explore compatibility of natural resin shellac with acrylic resin in order to make a more eco‐friendly coating composition and also to open a new avenue for consumption of shellac.
Design/methodology/approach
Different compositions of paint were prepared by varying the contents of shellac and acrylic resin. Selection was made for the composition yielding the best combination of properties like water resistance, alkali resistance, washability, etc.
Findings
Modification of shellac with acrylic resin showed improved film performance. The modified product showed good adhesion, finish; the films were smooth, flexible and no flaking/detachment was observed from the surfaces. This resulted in from esterification linkages between shellac and acrylic resin.
Research limitations/implications
The concentration of shellac in the composition was limited to a certain extent. Increase in shellac content impairs the film performance of the composition, especially with regard to alkali resistance.
Practical implications
Shellac was found to be very compatible with acrylic resin at all concentrations, this may be adopted in developing other shellac‐acrylic based products.
Originality/value
The modification of shellac with acrylic resin has been done, for the first time, to open a new vista for the consumption of shellac in surface coating.
