Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to study conducted electromagnetic interference (EMI) of the high-low voltage DC/DC converter based on GaN high-electron-mobility transistors (HEMTs) in electric vehicle, and design EMI filters to suppress the conducted EMI.
Design/methodology/approach
The conducted EMI propagation model is established through simulation and analysis studying the influences of parasitic parameters, operation mode, output power and near-field capacitive coupling effects on conducted EMI of the DC/DC converter and comparing the suppression effects of EMI filters with different topologies to select the best EMI filter.
Findings
It is shown that parasitic parameters, operation mode, output power and near-field capacitive coupling effects can affect the conducted EMI of the DC/DC converter, and EMI filters of the CLC topology can effectively suppress the conducted EMI below the limit of CISPR 25.
Originality/value
Analysis of conducted EMI and design of EMI filters greatly facilitate further explorations and studies on EMI problems of the high-low voltage DC/DC converter based on GaN HEMTs.

Abstract
Purpose
As a result of the ongoing globalization and commercialization of higher education, English is increasingly being used as the language of instruction in universities across the globe. Despite the growing popularity of English-medium instruction (EMI) for academic subject instruction in Kazakhstan, there is limited research on regional university undergraduate students' attitudes towards learning EMI. This article explores a case study of a chemistry undergraduate program in Kazakhstan, where EMI is used. This study seeks to identify beliefs related to EMI, student attitudes and the challenges faced when studying science in English.
Design/methodology/approach
Qualitative data were collected using open-ended questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with individuals selected using purposive sampling, which were then triangulated using classroom observations. The study employed a thematic analysis methodology to examine the gathered data, which included transcripts from interviews, audio logs from classroom observations and survey responses.
Findings
Following an in-depth look at the main themes, there were a variety of codes that made more sense when arranged in one of the four primary groups. These categories primarily focused on the possible obstacles that may be encountered when adopting EMI in Kazakhstan's higher education institutions. They are as follows: linguistic, managerial, cultural and emotional.
Originality/value
The results of this study will contribute to the development of improved EMI policies and practices that are more comprehensive, equitable and efficient.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to examine the challenges facing Japanese institutions of higher education wishing to implement degree programs taught through the medium of English.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper takes a comparative perspective in examining the rationales and policies for, and the challenges and successes associated with, the adoption of English-medium instruction (EMI) in Japan and in Europe, where EMI has a longer history. It uses government policy declarations and reports and synthesizes the research literature and information published by universities. Next, it investigates the practices that apply to the Japanese context and provides recommendations on the strategies that Japanese decision makers could adopt.
Findings
Japan does not share exactly the same rationales for adopting EMI as many European countries, however there is utility in looking to Europe for best practices. Japanese institutions of higher education can benefit from examining the linguistic, cultural and structural dilemmas that EMI poses.
Research limitations/implications
Documented evidence of the successful implementation of EMI programs is scarce, and therefore it is difficult to provide a comprehensive study of strategies that can be used to overcome the challenges which accompany EMI. This paper does not examine the introduction of EMI programs in Japan in relation to other Asian contexts.
Originality/value
As Japan is still in the early phases of introducing EMI programs, this paper provides valuable information for those involved in their implementation.

Abstract
Purpose
In response to internationalization and globalization, especially in higher education, universities in non-English-speaking countries have implemented English as a medium of instruction (EMI). The purpose of this study is to assess the satisfaction of students in terms of dimensions of EMI courses and examine the relationship between student motivation, engagement, and satisfaction with EMI courses.
Design/methodology/approach
By using a quantitative approach based on structured questionnaires of 437 Vietnamese undergraduate students, this study applied hierarchical regression analysis to examine the relationship between student motivation, engagement, and satisfaction with EMI courses.
Findings
Students have a relatively positive perception of the EMI courses that they have taken. In particular, they were most satisfied with teachers' teaching characteristics and least satisfied with students' learning characteristics. The study also confirmed that cognitive and emotional engagement have mediating effects on the relationship between motivation and students' satisfaction with EMI courses.
Originality/value
This study suggests that both educational institutions and teachers in non-speaking English countries should pay more attention to motivational factors to engage students in learning and ensure that they are satisfied with EMI courses.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the entrepreneurial marketing (EM) paradigm by empirically investigating the relationship between intra-organizational environment, EM intensity (EMI) and organizational performance in an emerging market context. Specifically, the paper identifies the elements of the intra-organizational environment that enhances EMI and also examines the impact of EMI on organizational performance.
Design/methodology/approach
The data were collected from large-sized companies in Egypt. Data were analyzed by using path analysis on Smart-PLS.
Findings
The findings suggest that the characteristics of the intra-organizational environment that support developing and increasing EMI in large-sized companies in emerging markets are cooperative competency, deep locus of planning and institutional support. Also, it was found that the long planning horizon hinders EMI. Finally, it was found that EMI is positively related to organizational performance and competitive advantage.
Practical implications
The study provides guidelines for managers of large-sized organizations, especially in emerging economies, on how to develop the intra-organizational environment to enhance EMI.
Originality/value
The study of EMI received little or no attention in previous research. Also, there is a paucity of empirical research on the impact of the intra-organizational environment on EMI and also on the impact of EMI on the organizational performance of large-sized companies in emerging markets. Therefore, the results of this research are a step toward filling these gaps.

Abstract
Purpose
Present 3D electromagnetic simulators have high accuracy, but they are time and memory expensive. Because of that, fast and simple expression for impedance is also necessary for initial inductor design. In this paper new efficient method for total impedance calculation of ferrite electromagnetic interference (EMI) suppressor is given. By using an algorithm, it is possible to predict correctly all variations of electrical characteristics introduced by varying geometry parameters of EMI suppressor.
Design/methodology/approach
The starting point for calculation of electrical characteristics of EMI suppressor is Greenhouse theory. Greenhouse decomposed inductor into its constituent segments. Basically, all segments of conductive layer are divided into parallel filaments having small, rectangular cross sections. The self‐ and mutual‐inductance were calculated using the concept of partial inductance. Total impedance of EMI suppressor is calculated taking care of dimension of chip size, material that are used and geometry of conductive layer.
Findings
The Simulator for Planar Inductive Structures (SPIS™) simulates effects of ferrite materials and geometrical parameters of planar inductive structures. With proposed software tool, designers can predict performance parameters quickly and easily before costly prototypes are built. SPIS™ software offers substantially reduced time to market, and increases device performance. The computed impedances, given by our software tool are compared with measured data and very good agreement was found.
Practical implications
Applied flexible efficient methods for impedance calculation of EMI suppressor are able to significantly increase the speed design of multilayer suppressors for universal series bus, low‐voltage differential signaling and in other high‐speed digital interfaces incorporated in notebooks and personal computers, digital cameras and scanners. Also, ferrite suppressors have been successfully employed for attenuating EMI in switching power supplies, electronic ignition systems, garage door openers, etc.
Originality/value
The paper presents realized structures of ferrite EMI suppressors. New geometries of conductive layer are proposed. In addition, using simple model of inductor, the paper develops a CAD simulation tool SPIS™ for calculation of electrical characteristics of EMI suppressors with different geometry of conductive layer.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to describe a support course for English-medium instruction (EMI) which continues to expand in European higher education (HE). While the phenomenon of teaching through English is not novel, support for university teachers appears to remain limited despite recognised challenges of EMI such as language proficiency and pedagogical considerations.
Design/methodology/approach
In the course non-native university lecturers in Finland were provided a course to practice various elements of English for academic purposes and receive feedback on their teaching. A pre-course needs analysis was used to determine the main causes for EMI concerns with non-native lecturers, and which elements of English they wished to develop during the course. The course itself consisted of six joint meetings, followed by individual teaching demonstrations, and concluded with a post-course analysis.
Findings
Findings suggest that Finnish university lecturers were pre-course most concerned about the accuracy, fluency and pronunciation of their academic English. Based on the post-course analysis, the most beneficial elements of the EMI support course were the reflective discussions about EMI, the language practice and receiving individual feedback.
Practical implications
The study suggests that support courses for university lecturers involved with EMI should not cover only language but allow lecturers to share their concerns and experiences and to practice in authentic teaching situations in English.
Originality/value
This study describes a pedagogically effective method to assist and encourage lecturers in HE to the use of English in their instruction.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to contribute to the ongoing debate about the instructional languages in Moroccan education through exploring graduate students’ attitudes towards the potential use of English-medium instruction (EMI) in Moroccan science universities.
Design/methodology/approach
In this study, 17 master and doctoral students have been interviewed to explore attitudes towards EMI implementation in Moroccan higher education. The data were collected and analysed based on constant comparative method, which belongs to the grounded theory methodology. The method is based on organizing the raw data into categories according to shared attributes while constantly comparing the parts of the data as they occur. The objective is to formulate new hypotheses and theories about the phenomenon of interest.
Findings
The findings of this study reveal that although graduate students hold positive attitudes towards the future implementation of EMI in higher education, they think students are not prepared for such a switch in the language of instruction given that they have been taught through either Arabic or French in lower levels. Hence, they suggest gradual implementation of EMI in lower levels and introduction of English as a foreign language instead of French at primary level.
Originality/value
Most of the previous studies on bilingual education and EMI have investigated non-Anglo-Saxon contexts, where English is the major foreign or second language. The researchers could not have located any study which investigates the possibility to implement EMI in post-colonial contexts, where other foreign languages, bearing colonial conations, are more dominant than English. This study presents the case of Morocco, where French, rather than English, is the dominant foreign language not only in education but also in different other domains of life.

Abstract
Thick film symmetrical LC cells with two pairs of terminations were printed on alumina using PdAg paste and crossover dielectric. Planar inductors such as meander, spiral, bispiral, and solenoid in plane were distributed over planar capacitors such as sandwich, interdigitated and segmented. Attenu‐ation and Smith charts of symmetrical EMI LC cells were measured on network analyzer in the range of 1 MHz to 3 GHz. Two or three main LC cells were joined in series to sum attenuation. The obtained results were compared mutually, at first, and than with the cubic (chip) EMI LC filters. The obtained EMI noise suppression was similar, but the filter band of thick film LC cells was much wider.

The EMI case is intended to serve as an engaging introduction to corporate financial policy and themes in managing the right side of the balance sheet. The case contrasts EMI's storied success with artists such as the Beatles, the Beach Boys, Pink Floyd, and Norah Jones with its recent inability to succeed in financial markets. In light of takeover threats and restructuring costs, EMI's CFO Martin Stewart must recommend EMI's dividend policy.
