Abstract

Printed (circuit) boards have been used in the electronics industry for the past 25 years and more. The technology used to design and manufacture PCBs is well known and accepted. Recently, however, designers of electronic equipment have shown that the use of newer materials and systems, such as flexible and moulded circuits, hybrid circuits, or a combination of these, can significantly improve the cost/performance ratio for electronic interconnects. This paper examines some of the many possibilities open to electronics designers and how these new opportunities can improve the economics and performance of electronic equipment.

Abstract

The Palexpo Exhibition and Conference Centre close to Geneva Airport was the location for this timely event organised by the EIPC and sponsored by Du Pont Electronics. Participants, including speakers, chairpersons and press, totalled approximately 190—perhaps a slightly lower figure than anticipated for this first European symposium on an issue of considerable significance for the industry.

Abstract

Now formed for almost two years, the Brazilian Printed Circuit Association, ABRACI (Associação Brasileira de Circuitos Impressos), held on 17–18 September 1987 at Curitiba its first seminar on printed circuit technology. The association, with 150 members, is going from strength to strength and the 1987 Seminar was attended by 250 persons from several states. Participants included representatives from well known international companies (Du Pont, Degussa, IBM, Unisys, etc.), Government, Universities and local companies. The programme of 16 papers was divided into four sessions: Market, Quality, Manufacturing and SMT. The two‐day event proved too short for the enthusiasm of participants.

Abstract

Following the endorsement of the new plans for this year's show at the last AGM, the initial stages of the promotional campaign for CEMEX 94 have been launched. The information packs and booking forms recently circulated to CEMA members have already elicited a good response with some 25 companies making stand reservations. As before, the show will be a mix of open sites and shell scheme. Over the next few weeks members will receive additional information covering show services, special packages and promotional opportunities. The support for the move back to the Pavilion Hall has been welcomed as an ideal opening to give CEMEX a separate ‘home’ at the NEC. In a statement released with the new publicity material for the show, Chairman Fred Thorns expressed his confidence and predicted that “..we will see a stronger economy, a full turnout of CEMA exhibitors showing a broad range of equipment and materials, and greatly increased activity throughout our industry”. Members who may not have seen the CEMEX information or would like to know more should contact: SCS Exhibitions Ltd, 212 London Road, North End, Portsmouth, Hampshire PO29JE. Telephone: (0705) 665133. Fax: (0705) 670036.

Abstract

A Workshop sponsored by the EIPC in an attempt to provide insight into data transfer technology and its use for the printed circuit board industry was held in Berlin on 11–12 May. Course notes on the EIPC Electronic Data Transfer Committee (EDT Committee) and its activities were provided and the electronic host system, ECIS (EIPC Communication and Information System), was explained in detail.

Abstract

The Old Ship Hotel, Brighton, provided the venue on 4–5 June for this, the first European Printed Circuit Convention to be organised jointly by the European institute of Printed Circuits and the Institute of Circuit Technology. With the objective of providing a platform for specialists from various fields of printed circuit technology from both the UK and mainland Europe to address a wide cross‐section of British and European delegates, the two Institutes envisaged this event as being the forerunner of regular joint conventions in the intervening years between Printed Circuit World Conventions. Despite World Cup fever, over 100 delegates were present at the two‐day conference, representing the UK, USA, USSR, Hungary and the majority of West European countries.
