Abstract

Purpose

Design, implementation, and evaluation are all important for integrated care. However, they miss one critical factor: education. The authors define “integrated care education” as meaningful learning that purposefully supports collaboration and the development of adaptive expertise in integrated care. The ECHO (Extensions for Community Health Outcomes) model is a novel digital health solution that uses technology-enabled learning (TEL) to facilitate, support, and model integrated care education. Using ECHO Concussion as a case study, the authors describe the effects of technology-enabled integrated care education on the micro-, meso-, and macro-dimensions of integrated care.

Design/methodology/approach

This case study was constructed using data extracted from ECHO Concussion from video-archived sessions, participant observation, and internal program evaluation memos. The research team met regularly to discuss the development of relevant themes to the dimensions of integrated care.

Findings

On the micro-level, clinical integration occurs through case-based learning and the development of adaptive expertise. On the meso-level, professional integration is achieved through the development of the “specialist generalist,” professional networks and empathy. Finally, on the macro-level, ECHO Concussion and the ECHO model achieve vertical and horizontal system integration in the delivery of integrated care. Vertical integration is achieved through ECHO by educating and connecting providers across sectors from primary to quaternary levels of care. Horizontal integration is achieved through the establishment of lateral peer-based networks across sectors as a result of participation in ECHO sessions with a focus on population-level health.

Originality/value

This case study examines the role of education in the delivery of integrated care through one program, ECHO Concussion. Using the three dimensions of integrated care on the micro-, meso-, and macro-levels, this case study is the first explicit operationalization of ECHO as a means of delivering integrated care education and supporting integrated care delivery.

Abstract

Purpose

For oil film thickness measurement using ultrasonic spring model, obtaining the isolated reflection from the oil film layer is the key point. While for oil film thickness measurement in thrust bearings with thin liner, the reflection from the substrate-Babbitt interface will overlap with the reflection from the oil film layer. This overlapping will render the ultrasonic spring model invalid. To obtain the isolated reflected signal from the oil film layer accurately, an adaptive method was developed to recover the overlapping echoes.

Design/methodology/approach

A genetic-algorithm-based support matching pursuit (GA-based SMP) was developed to provide the optimal echo number and initial parameters guesses automatically and efficiently. Then, the traditional expectation maximization (EM) model was used to fine tune the accurate results.

Findings

The developed method was tested using both simulated echoes and the overlapping echoes encountered in the ultrasonic oil film thickness measurement of thrust bearings. The results demonstrated that the developed method performed well on recovering overlapping echoes adaptively.

Originality/value

The work shows an adaptive method to recover the ultrasonic overlapping echoes. When used in ultrasonic oil film thickness measurement, it can help extend the application of traditional ultrasonic spring model to objects with four or more layers.

Abstract

In 1998, the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) model which is composed of four entities (work, expression, manifestation and item) and their associative relationships (primary, responsibility and subject), was proposed by the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA). The FRBR model can be deployed as a logical framework for proceeding metadata analysis and developing metadata format. This paper presents a case study of the National Palace Museum (NPM) in Taipei to examine the feasibility of the FRBR model. Based on the examination of case study at the NPM, the FRBR model is proven to be a useful and fundamental framework for metadata analysis and implementation. Findings show that the FRBR model is helpful in identifying proper metadata elements organization and their distribution over the FRBR entities. The model is more suitable for media‐centric and association‐rich contents. However, in order to refine the FRBR model as a common framework for metadata, it would also require supportive mechanisms for management responsibility relationships for the workflow consideration and refine the distinction between work and expression entity.

Abstract

Purpose

Digital voice assistants use wake word engines (WWEs) to monitor surrounding audio for detection of the voice assistant's name. There are two failed conditions for a WWE, false negative and false positive. Wake word false positives threaten a loss of personal privacy because, upon activation, the digital assistant records audio to the voice cloud service for processing.

Design/methodology/approach

This observational study attempted to identify which Amazon Alexa wake word and Amazon Echo smart speaker resulted in the fewest number of human voice false positives. During an eight-week period, false-positive data were collected from four different Amazon Echo smart speakers located in a small apartment with three female roommates.

Findings

Results from this study suggest the number of human voice false positives are related to wake word selection and Amazon Echo hardware. Results from this observational study determined that the wake word Alexa resulted in the fewest number of false positives.

Originality/value

This study suggests Amazon Alexa users can better protect their privacy by selecting Alexa as their wake word and selecting smart speakers with the highest number of microphones in the far-field array with 360-degree geometry.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to focus on the evaluation model of the enterprises' technological innovation system, based on the theory of complex adaptive system.

Design/methodology/approach

Combined with the status quo and recent studies of Chinese enterprises' technological innovation, the paper discusses the complex‐system features of the technological innovation. The stimulus‐response model is used to establish the two‐level framework for enterprises' technological innovation system. By means of the adaptive fitness function, the economic and social utility of enterprises' technological innovation is measured from two dimensions. Finally, the fuzzy catastrophe model is introduced to evaluate the enterprises' technological innovation.

Findings

The enterprises' technological innovation system has attributions of the subject aggregation, the systematic openness, nonlinearity and diversity. Thus, the macro‐micro based technological innovation system from the perspective of complex adaptive system is proposed. The system utility is considered based on the system subjects and system structure, and the calculation framework of the adaptive fitness for the whole system is obtained by considering the emergent property describing the system scale effect and structure effect. In fact, the fuzzy theory can well reflect the influential situation that the interactions between different factors may cause the mutation of the higher level and the interactions between enterprises can lead to the shifts of the system.

Originality/value

The paper proposes the complex adaptive system for the enterprises' technological innovation based on the special macro environment in China. A new framework for the research of technological innovation is provided by analyzing the system inner model. Fuzzy catastrophe model can reduce the evaluation irrationality due to the subjective index weights.

Takes the view that managerial decisions are made in a diversity of organizational settings which can best be explained and evaluated in the context of conceptual interdisciplinary decision‐making models, and that such models constitute an appropriate vehicle for explaining the eclectic aspects of managerial decision making in all types of formal organization. Presents a typology of conceptual decision‐making models and evaluates their similarities and differences along with their respective efficacies in various managerial decision‐making contexts. Advances the process model of managerial decision making as the ideal choice for decisions which have significant long‐term consequences for the whole organization.

The purpose of this paper is to outline a hierarchical model for developing essential e-textbook functionality and to offer important insight for e-textbook designers.

Design/methodology/approach

Guided by the SAMR model, five hierarchical functional layers are proposed in the development process for e-textbook to enable more effective and efficient teaching and learning.

Findings

Moving up from the substitution to transformation level, each layer extends the functionality of the underlying layers to unveil new features that support the learning processes and gradually transform e-textbooks from a self-directed informal learning tool to become a formal learning platform.

Originality/value

The hierarchical model provides e-textbook designers and developers with a guideline on how to surpass the present state of e-textbooks and offer additional value-added features for learners. The required technologies for each layer are also discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a method for accurate radar echo simulation of wind turbines (WTs) array. It can solve the problem of passive interference from wind farms to neighboring radar stations.

Design/methodology/approach

First of all, the equivalent model of scattering centers of a single WT is obtained by using the spatial spectrum estimation method, and the accuracy of this model is verified by the scaled model experiment; then scattering centers model of WTs array was established by using the spatial coordinate transformation method. According to the position relationship between the model and the radar, and combined with the multipath scattering theory, the radar echo equation of WTs array was deduced. Finally, the simulation analysis is carried out with the four GoldWind 77/1500 WTs as an example and compared with the traditional methods.

Findings

This paper verifies the accuracy of the equivalent model of scattering centers through the WT scaled model experiment, and through simulation analysis, it is found that the result of this method is more consistent with the multipath scattering of radar echo between WTs array in practical engineering than the traditional method.

Originality/value

Based on the theory of high-frequency scattering, this paper introduces scattering centers into the solution of radar echo and considers the multipath scattering of radar echo, then a method for solving the radar echo of WTs array based on scattering centers is proposed.

Abstract

Purpose

The notion of luxury has changed due to the democratization and the fast adoption pace of intangible luxury service providers embedding voice-controlled assistants. In particular, Amazon’s Echo Look is expected to further democratize luxury services and consumer experience; indeed, this camera-based device acts as a personal consultant as it provides fashion advices based on the pictures of its users. Nonetheless, as the Echo Look proliferates the market, concerns around its potential disruption to the marketplace alongside usage-related issues, such as privacy, will arise. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

The research adopted an exploratory approach using elite interviewing. The sample included 17 experts in the fields of digital marketing, fashion consulting, information technology security and retailing.

Findings

The study pioneers the discussion on how interactive voice-activated assistant (IVA) devices can potentially outweigh concerns around safety and privacy through providing luxury-like personalized services. To that end, the Echo Look device was taken as the key example based on the unique features and benefits it provides to its users, namely, in being perceived as a personal fashion consultant.

Originality/value

The literature on intangible luxury based on IVA devices is still nascent. This study fills a considerable gap in the literature related to retailers’ technological innovations aimed at democratizing luxury-like personalized experiences.
