This paper complements the writer's own expertise with external research and reference to large enterprise scale e‐training deployments recently implemented for global companies, including PepsiCo.

Findings

The paper finds that big business is waking up to the efficiency and cost benefits of wide‐scale e‐learning deployment.

Originality/value

This paper launches the debate for enterprise wide e‐learning architectures in large companies.

Abstract

Purpose

To explore the development of e‐learning within the context of corporate universities with the aim of informing the debate on e‐learning and establishing key areas of concern for emerging corporate universities.

Design/methodology/approach

Three case reviews of large leading edge organizations in different sectors.

Findings

Whilst e‐learning has potential, its success is significantly limited by context which influences the degree of sophistication and integration of e‐learning and its ability to contribute to the corporate university learning processes and outcomes.

Research limitations/implications

Further research is required on both the learner experience and in the wider evaluation of learning outcomes beyond simple statistical evaluation of participation.

Practical implications

Key areas of difficulty are identified as: the focus on generic e‐learning solutions; the barrier imposed by the base technology level of the organization; the overriding concern for ROI at the expense of learner experiences; and the extent to which pedagogical possibilities are not fully exploited.

Originality/value

Raises the often overlooked issues of pedagogy and learner response to e‐learning as inhibitors to the contribution that e‐learning can make to the corporate university.

Abstract

Purpose

This research aims to be one of the earliest studies to investigate tourism e‐learning in Egypt, thus, it will initially shed light on the current standing of e‐learning in Egypt before proceeding to: identify the present status of e‐learning in Egyptian tourism higher education; explore the potential advantages and drawbacks of using e‐learning in tourism higher education; and explore the suitability of e‐learning for tourism higher education.

Design/methodology/approach

Data for this research have been collected by adopting a combination of “content analysis” and “semi‐structured interviews”. However, a pilot study was initially conducted before applying the main methods of research.

Findings

Despite the relative newness of the Egyptian e‐learning experiment, the Egyptian government has succeeded in establishing the required infrastructure for e‐leaning. However, deficiencies still exist especially regarding qualifying the Egyptian academics to participate efficiently in the e‐learning process. Regarding application, tourism e‐learning is applied to a limited extent in Egypt at the present time, as only seven public colleges are currently providing some e‐learning services, which are mostly of a simple nature. Tourism private colleges are currently languid concerning the application of e‐learning despite the potentiality of success especially with regard to serving international students.

Originality/value

Despite the importance of both tourism and tourism education for a country such as Egypt. this research is the first to investigate the applicability of tourism e‐learning in Egypt.

Abstract

Purpose

To draw attention to what experience has shown are the “must consider” areas to be taken into account when considering an e‐learning intervention.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on 29 research case studies.

Findings

This article draws on the experiences of a number of companies which experienced difficulties in taking the e‐learning route. E‐learning should not necessarily be used to replace classroom training as it is not suitable for everything. You need to make sure that the learning or training needs drive the technology rather than the other way round, and the technology itself can pose a multitude of problems. The time involved is also commonly underestimated, as is the diverse range of people who should be involved in the start‐up team.

Practical implications

Attention is drawn to key areas for consideration when venturing into an e‐learning development.

Originality/value

Reflections of early adopters of e‐learning highlight areas of success and difficulty, to help other organisations avoid the same pitfalls.

The evolution of Internet Technology has influenced the basis of education by introducing new methodologies in to teaching and giving a new dimension to distance learning. On the other hand, there is an emerging need on the users part to define some standards that will be used for judging the quality and effectiveness of the educational Websites. In this project, a presentation of evaluation methodology of Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) is presented, along with basic guidelines that must be followed when evaluating a VLE. This report emphasizes the importance of evaluation in the educational practice and presents a review of the current literature in terms of helping the VLE practitioner to find his own way concerning the evaluation process.

Abstract

Feels the e‐learning industry has been the victim of a lot of hype, without producing the growth that has been expected by commentators and players within the industry. Seeks to explain why the e‐learning has fared better in the USA than elsewhere, and highlights some of the problems that e‐learning providers and clients face to prevent the expected level of growth. Shows that e‐learning has a valid and beneficial role to play, and outlines some of the areas where it can play a useful role: in particular for training in a regulatory environment, for training large numbers of geographically‐dispersed people, and for reducing time spent on topics such as induction and product training. Discusses the issue of “blended” learning in this context, showing how e‐learning is best used as a complement to traditional methods of training and should not be viewed as a replacement.

Abstract

Purpose

The primary purpose of this research paper is to understand the role of national cultural dimensions on e‐learning practices in India. India is considered a major player in the world economy today. US multinationals are significantly increasing their presence in India and understanding cultural preferences will help global companies transition better.

Design/methodology/approach

This conceptual paper uses the national cultural dimensions of the global leadership and organizational behavior effectiveness project, which is identified as the most topical theoretical framework on culture. The national cultural scores are used to develop hypotheses for specific cultural dimensions. Examples from the literature are also used to strengthen the proposed hypotheses.

Findings

This research proposes that national cultural dimensions of power distance, uncertainty avoidance, in‐group collectivism, and future‐orientation influence e‐learning practices. This study distinguishes between synchronous and asynchronous methods of e‐learning and the role of culture on the same. Future research can definitely empirically test the hypotheses proposed.

Practical implications

This study provides strategic implications for multinationals with a guide sheet identifying the role of the various cultural dimensions on e‐learning. The suggested strategies can be implemented by multinationals in other countries with similar national cultural dimensions also.

Originality/value

This research also proposes a theoretical e‐learning model identifying the impact of national cultural dimensions on e‐learning practices. This research also provides practitioners a strategic implications model that could be implemented for e‐learning initiatives in multinationals.

Abstract

Purpose

Using information and communication technologies to deliver human resource services (also known as e‐HRM) has become an important strategy for firms seeking to achieve a competitive advantage. A case‐based study was carried out with the purpose of investigating how four of the most competitive Mexican firms are implementing their e‐HRM strategy.

Design/methodology/approach

Literature from e‐HRM and human resource management in Latin America is reviewed and integrated. Four case studies developed in Mexican firms are depicted.

Findings

Evidence suggests that, to fully understand the way e‐HRM is used in firms from emerging economies, it is important to take into consideration local idiosyncrasies.

Originality/value

This study integrates Latin American dimensions of HR management in the study of e‐HRM, a budding research stream that is under‐investigated in emerging countries.

Abstract

Purpose

Australian tertiary institutions are increasingly incorporating technologies, such as social media and Web 2.0 tools into teaching in response to changing student needs. The purpose of this paper is to revisit a fundamental question, frequently asked in marketing, “what do our ‘customers’ [students] think now?” This will help determine the effectiveness of application of these technologies in courses and teaching programs in a changing competitive educational environment.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a mixed method approach, data were collected through 31 qualitative interviews and a survey of 231 university marketing students. Quantitative techniques included summary statistics, factor analysis and t-test.

Findings

Results indicate while students’ perceived flexibility and better learning outcomes as positive aspects of e-learning, they have concerns about flexibility for self-paced learning, self-motivational issues, lack of human interaction and fostering teamwork.

Research limitations/implications

The study is limited to one Australian university operating in domestic and international markets. However, the study needs to be replicated for better generalizability across the sector.

Practical implications

The findings question the effectiveness of e-learning as an alternative approach to face-to-face learning pedagogy. However, regular review of current e-learning tools is needed to help match student and tertiary institution expectations.

Originality/value

This study re-investigates students’ perception in relation to the benefits that e-learning is expected to yield. It is one of the few studies questioning whether these promised benefits are valued by the tertiary student fraternity.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the development of a blended e‐learning pedagogical model for an undergraduate enterprise programme. The proliferation of e‐learning programmes offers new opportunities and challenges for universities to meet the learning needs of new student markets. However, the use of e‐learning as an enabling mechanism for enterprise education remains largely unexplored within academic literature.

Design/methodology/approach

The case study methodology comprises a series of focus groups with key stakeholders in the project, namely online tutors, students and scheme leaders from a number of partner colleges involved in the delivery of the course.

Findings

The study charts the evolution of the blended learning pedagogy which was found to best meet the learning requirements of non‐traditional learners on an undergraduate programme. The blended learning pedagogy strategy which was developed replicated the best informal practice that had emerged through each of the partner institutions and the learning needs of the students. Constituent elements of the pedagogy included the provision of structured face‐to‐face events, a range of student supports systems and the creation of a code of practice for online tutors. As a result, a model of best practice for blended learning is proposed.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the literature in terms of proposing a working framework for online undergraduate enterprise education with identification of critical success factors including supportive induction, viable pedagogy and effective support systems. The framework can be utilised by practitioners and theoreticians as a guide to the effective management of pedagogical issues associated with blended online education.
