Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose and demonstrate a novel surface plasmon resonance (SPR)-sensing approach by using the fundamental mode beam based on a graded index multimode fiber (GIF). The proposed SPR sensor has high sensitivity and controllable working dynamic range, which expects to solve the two bottlenecks of fiber SPR sensor, including low sensitivity and the difficulty in multichannel detection.

Design/methodology/approach

The low-order mode of the GIF to SPR sense, which keeps the sensitivity advantage of the single-mode fiber SPR sensor, is used. By using this new SPR sensor, the effect of light incident angle and gold film thickness on working dynamic range was studied. According to the study results, the smaller is the incident angle, the larger is the SPR working dynamic range and the longer is the resonance wavelength with a fixed gold film thickness; the larger is the gold film thickness, the longer is the resonance wavelength with a fixed grinding angle. After the parameter optimization, the sensitivity of these two parameter-adjusting methods reach 4,442 and 3031 nm/RIU.

Originality/value

When the grinding angle of the GIF increases, the dynamic range of the resonance wavelength increases and has a redshift, sensitivity increases, and the resonance valley becomes more unobvious with a fixed gold film thickness. Similarly, when gold film thickness increases, the dynamic range of the resonance wavelength increases and has a redshift, sensitivity increases, and the resonance valley becomes more unobvious with a fixed grinding angle. These adjusting performance aforementioned lay the foundation for solving of the fiber-based SPR multichannel detection and increasing of the fiber-based SPR sensor sensitivity, which has a good application value.

Laser based cameras must meet very strict design criteria if they are to operate at long ranges; these criteria are explored. High‐speed laser cameras produce vast quantities of image data; it is shown that this data can be converted swiftly into a 3‐D CAD model.

Abstract

Purpose

Although information technology (IT) governance and IT capability have been extensively examined, the impact of IT governance mechanisms on IT-enabled dynamic capability (ITDC) with moderators has received less attention. This study investigates how the impact of IT governance mechanisms on firm performance is achieved through an ITDC through the moderating role of IT governance decentralization and a turbulent environment.

Design/methodology/approach

This study extends from the traditional view of IT capabilities and integrates dynamic capability theory to propose that IT governance is vital for the ITDC. Path analysis, hierarchical regression analysis and moderation analysis were performed using partial least squares (Smart PLS 3.0) as the data analysis methods. This study empirically tests the proposed mediated moderation model by using data collected from 254 firms in China to test the hypotheses.

Findings

Significant and impactful relationships are found in the model that includes turbulent environment moderating effects. Contrary to expectations, IT governance decentralization is also significant but not very strong.

Research limitations/implications

This study’s findings have implications for investigating IT governance, IT-enabled capabilities and moderators. Accordingly, this study has implications for board and executive management to capitalize on dynamic IT capability, to keep pace with the challenges and turbulent conditions associated with business needs and for the productivity paradox in the context of Chinese firms.

Originality/value

This country-specific research study theoretically contributes to the IT governance, dynamic capabilities and turbulent environment in the information systems literature and proposes many practical guides to the board and executive management of companies in the Chinese context.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to categorize and organize dynamic capabilities that have been inductively identified in empirical research into a comprehensive taxonomy. Thus, it addresses calls in the literature for a better understanding of dynamic capabilities and integration of scattered empirical findings into theory.

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic literature review approach was adopted, with a total of 34 articles published between August 2007 and April 2020, from which 240 idiosyncratic dynamic capabilities were identified. The taxonomy was constructed using the Gioia-method.

Findings

The main finding is a three-level taxonomy of dynamic capabilities (DC). Level DC-1 is based on the existing triad of sensing, seizing and transforming. Level DC-2 is newly introduced to the literature by this study, consisting of 19 dynamic sub-capabilities that categorize and organize all 240 idiosyncratic dynamic capabilities in the sample (level DC-3). The taxonomy supports the existing claim that dynamic capabilities are common in key features and idiosyncratic in details. Moreover, theoretical connections to business model innovation and ambidexterity are indicated.

Practical implications

This study integrates scattered empirical findings of specific dynamic capabilities and translates them to a practitioner audience. The taxonomy allows the strategic manager to understand what they specifically are and, thus, assess the dynamic capability endowment of the firm which allows deploying, developing and fostering them.

Originality/value

The taxonomy provides a comprehensive and tangible picture of what dynamic capabilities look like in practice. It improves existing knowledge and understanding by bridging the rigor-relevance gap between rather rigorous conceptual literature and rather relevant empirical research as it integrates them. As such, it can serve as a “map” of dynamic capabilities for scholars and practitioners.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate a simple design of a fiber optic displacement sensor using a multimode plastic fiber coupler based on reflective intensity modulation technique.

Design/methodology/approach

The performances of this sensor are investigated by correlating the detector output with different light sources, coupling ratios and various real objects with different reflectivity properties namely aluminum, brass and copper. In contrast to the output profile produced by probes with multiple fibers placed adjacently together, this sensor uses only one fiber for sending and receiving the light and therefore only the back slope exists.

Findings

Aluminum exhibit the highest performance among the real objects when coupled with a red He‐Ne laser and a coupling ratio of 50:50 with a sensitivity, linear range, resolution and dynamic range of 1.7 mV/mm, 1.5 mm, 16 μm, and 5.0 mm, respectively.

Originality/value

This is the first demonstration of a fiber optic displacement sensor using fiber coupler probe with successful examination of the correlation between the detector output, variation in coupling ratios and reflectivity properties of the tested real objects.

Abstract

This paper presents our development of a novel force and force rate sensory system to advance applications in micromanipulation using an in situ polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) piezoelectric sensor. To allow close monitoring of magnitude and direction of microforces acting on microdevices during manipulation, PVDF ploymer films are used to fabricate highly sensitive 1D and 2D sensors to detect real‐time microforce and force rate information during the manipulation process. The sensory system with a resolution in the range of sub‐micronewtons can be applied effectively to develop a technology on the force‐reflection microassembly of surface MEMS structures. In addition, a tele‐micromanipulation platform, which can be used to perform tele‐microassembly of the MEMS structures and tele‐cell‐manipulation with force/haptic feedback via Internet was also built successfully.

Abstract

Purpose

There is an emerging recognition in the strategy field that differences in organization forms represent firms’ capability to gain benefit from investing in technology. This study has intention to add to this stream of research by proposing the technological turbulence (TT) as a primary contingency factor focussing on strategic orientation (SO) as main determinant of firm performance (FP). The purpose of this paper is to provide considerable suggestion on how to match SO with various level of TT.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses quantitative approach with structural equation model to understand the moderating effect of information TT on the relationship between SO and FP. The 390 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Indonesia contributes to the research as randomly selected respondents.

Findings

The result shows how the TT influences managerial decision-making processes under an opportunity-based paradigm. However, SME managers face lack of capability to deal with high TT.

Research limitations/implications

This study uses cross-section data at the SMEs context in Indonesia.

Practical implications

This study suggest that the initiative to encourage SMEs to adopt information technology (IT) should consider the SME capability to utilize the IT.

Originality/value

The research gap challenges a question from previous literature on how long firms retain a given capability to deal with dynamic environment. This study has intention to add to the stream of research by proposing the information TT as a primary contingency factor focussing on SO as main determinant of FP.

Abstract

On the basis of certain simplifying assumptions a general equation can be developed that provides an estimate of the flutter speed of a binary system. The equation includes aerodynamic stiffness derivatives, and in the absence of reliable derivatives for oscillatory motion it is suggested that derivatives derived from steady flow measurements can be used. The equation is applied to derive specific formulae for main surface flexure‐torsion flutter. The effects of compressibility on the derivatives for this particular case is deduced, and the derivatives are then used to estimate certain general effects of compressibility on flutter. It appears that many of the generally accepted features of flutter in the transonic region can be established by this approach, but the application of the formula is limited by the lack of reliable data for aerodynamic stiffness derivatives. A concentrated effort to establish these derivative values is likely to be more rewarding in the long run than flutter tests on innumerable models to establish overall flutter trends of limited application.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to analyze the impact of price-limit hits by hit type and when such hits start and stop using intraday trades and quotes at a one-second frequency for firms included in the BIST-50 index during the 13-months starting with March 2008. Like the recent COVID-19 period, this period includes the heightened stress in global financial markets in September 2008.

Design/methodology/approach

Using intra-day trades and quotes at a one-second frequency, the authors examine the market effects of price limits for firms included in the BIST-50 index during the global financial crisis. The authors compare the values of various metrics for 60 min centered on price-limit hit periods. The authors conduct robustness tests using auto regressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) models with trade-by-trade and with 3-min returns.

Findings

The findings are supportive of the following hypotheses: magnet price effects, greater informational asymmetric effects of market quality and each version of price discovery. Results are robust using samples differentiated by cross-listed status, same-day quotes instead of transaction prices and equidistant and trade-by-trade returns.

Originality/value

The authors use intraday data to reduce measurement error that is particularly pronounced when daily data are used to assess price limits that start and/or stop during a trading session. The authors contribute to the micro-structure literature by using ARIMA models with trade-by-trade and 3-min returns to alleviate some bias due to the autocorrelations in returns around price-limit hits in the presence of a magnet effect. The authors include some recent regulation changes in various countries to illustrate the importance of circuit breakers using price limits during COVID-19.
