Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to analyze Kickstarter data along with social media data from a data mining perspective. Kickstarter is a crowdfunding financing plataform and is a form of fundraising and is increasingly being adopted as a source for achieving the viability of projects. Despite its importance and adoption growth, the success rate of crowdfunding campaigns was 47% in 2017, and it has decreased over the years. A way of increasing the chances of success of campaigns would be to predict, by using machine learning techniques, if a campaign would be successful. By applying classification models, it is possible to estimate if whether or not a campaign will achieve success, and by applying regression models, the authors can forecast the amount of money to be funded.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors propose a solution in two phases, namely, launching and campaigning. As a result, models better suited for each point in time of a campaign life cycle.

Findings

The authors produced a static predictor capable of classifying the campaigns with an accuracy of 71%. The regression method for phase one achieved a 6.45 of root mean squared error. The dynamic classifier was able to achieve 85% of accuracy before 10% of campaign duration, the equivalent of 3 days, given a campaign with 30 days of length. At this same period time, it was able to achieve a forecasting performance of 2.5 of root mean squared error.

Originality/value

The authors carry out this research presenting the results with a set of real data from a crowdfunding platform. The results are discussed according to the existing literature. This provides a comprehensive review, detailing important research instructions for advancing this field of literature.

Abstract

In this chapter, the authors consider the role of time for research in occupational stress and well-being. First, temporal issues in studying occupational health longitudinally, focusing in particular on the role of time lags and their implications for observed results (e.g., effect detectability), analyses (e.g., handling unequal durations between measurement occasions), and interpretation (e.g., result generalizability, theoretical revision) were discussed. Then, time-based assumptions when modeling lagged effects in occupational health research, providing a focused review of how research has handled (or ignored) these assumptions in the past, and the relative benefits and drawbacks of these approaches were discussed. Finally, recommendations for readers, an accessible tutorial (including example data and code), and discussion of a new structural equation modeling technique, continuous time structural equation modeling, that can “handle” time in longitudinal studies of occupational health were provided.

Abstract

Purpose

Cables are widely used, and they play a key role in complex electromechanical products such as vehicles, ships, aircraft and satellites. Cable design and assembly significantly impact the development cycle and assembly quality, which is be-coming a key element affecting the function of a product. However, there are various kinds of cables, with complex geo-metric configurations and a narrow assembly space, which can easily result in improper or missed assembly, an unreasonable layout or interference. Traditional serial design methods are inefficient and costly, and they cannot predict problems in installation and use. Based on physical modeling, computer-aided cable design and assembly can effectively solve these problems. This paper aims to address virtual assembly (VA) of flexible cables based on physical modeling.

Design/methodology/approach

Much research has focused recently on virtual design and assembly-process planning for cables. This paper systematically reviews the research progress and the current state of mechanical models, virtual design, assembly-process planning, collision detection and geometric configuration and proposes areas for further research.

Findings

In the first instance, the main research groups and typical systems are investigated, followed by extensive exploration of the major research issues. The latter can be reviewed from five perspectives: the current state of mechanical models, virtual design, assembly-process planning, collision detection and geometric configuration. Finally, the barriers that prevent successful application of VA are also discussed, and the future research directions are summarized.

Originality/value

This paper presents a comprehensive survey of the topics of VA of flexible cables based on physical modeling and investigates some new ideas and recent advances in the area.

Abstract

Purpose

Owing to the excellent performance, giant magnetostrictive materials (GMMs) are widely used in many engineering fields. The dynamic Jiles–Atherton (J-A) model, derived from physical mechanism, is often used to describe the hysteresis characteristics of GMM. However, this model, despite cited by many different literature studies, seems not to possess unique expressions, which may cause great trouble to the subsequent application. This paper aims to provide the rational expressions of the dynamic J-A model and propose a numerical computation scheme to obtain the model results with high accuracy and fast speed.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper analyzes different published papers and provides a reasonable form of the dynamic J-A model based on functional properties and physical explanations. Then, a numerical computation scheme, combining the Newton method and the explicit Adams method, is designed to solve the modified model. In addition, the error source and transmission path of the numerical solution are investigated, and the influence of model parameters on the calculation error is explored. Finally, some attempts are made to study the influence of numerical scheme parameters on the accuracy and time of the computation process. Subsequently, an optimization procedure is proposed.

Findings

A rational form of the dynamic J-A model is concluded in this paper. Using the proposed numerical calculation scheme, the maximum calculation error, while computing the modified model, can remain below 2 A/m under different model parameter combinations, and the computation time is always less than 0.5 s. After optimization, the calculation speed can be enhanced with the computation accuracy guaranteed.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this paper is the first one trying to provide a rational form of the dynamic J-A model among different citations. No other research studies focus on designing a detailed computation scheme targeting the fast and accurate calculation of this model as well. And the performance of the proposed calculation method is validated in different conditions.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to clarify the dynamic principle of internal structure of a complex morphing wing and control the wing to change configurations rapidly and smoothly. It includes modeling the dynamics of the morphing wing and designing a rational morphing control system.

Design/methodology/approach

The dynamic model of the morphing wing is developed based on Lagrange method of analytical mechanics. The generalized forces are obtained by virtual work principle. Since the morphing wing is a strongly coupled, over‐actuated and nonlinear system with multi‐input and multi‐output, the control system design includes a control allocator, a dynamic inversion controller and two PID controllers. The control allocator is designed based on pseudo inverse method; the dynamic inversion controller is applied to make the original system decoupled into two independent linear systems by proper nonlinear feedback transformation; two classical PID controllers are adopted for the linearlized systems.

Findings

The validity of the dynamic model and the controller is verified according to the simulation results using ADAMS and Matlab. It suggests that integrating Lagrange equation, pseudo inverse allocation, dynamic inversion control and classical PID method, is an effective way to solve problems of dynamic modeling and control for morphing wings.

Research limitations/implications

The flexibility of the structure, the changes of the aerodynamic load, the mass and the dynamic performances of actuators are not taken into account. Therefore, researchers are encouraged to develop a more realistic morphing wing model.

Practical implications

The paper includes implications for the development of a dynamic model of a complex morphing wing and a rational morphing control system.

Originality/value

The paper fulfils a complete process from multi‐rigid‐body dynamic modeling to control system design for an over‐actuated nonlinear complex morphing wing, which could be a foundation of further researches on morphing wing dynamics and control.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to capture the dynamic variations in sales of a product based upon the dynamic estimation of the time series data and propose a model that imitates the price discounting and promotion strategy for a product category in a retail organization.

Design/methodology/approach

Time series data relating to sales has been used to model the sales estimates using moving average and proportional and derivative control; thereafter a sales forecast is generated to estimate the sales of a particular product category. This provides valuable inputs for taking lot sizing decisions regarding procurement of the products and selection of suppliers. A hybrid model has been proposed and explained with a hypothetical case, which considerably impacts the sales promotion and intelligent pricing decisions.

Findings

A conceptual framework is developed for modeling the dynamic price discounting strategy in retail using fuzzy logic. The model imitates sales promotion and price discounting strategy. This has helped minimize the inventory cost thereby keeping the profitability of the retail organization intact.

Research limitations/implications

There is no appropriate empirical data to verify the models. In light of the research approach (modeling based upon historical time series data of a particular product category) that was undertaken, there is a possibility that the research results may be valid for the product category that was selected. Therefore, the researchers are advised to test the proposed propositions further for other product categories.

Originality/value

The study provides valuable insight on how to use the real-time sales data for designing a dynamic automated model for product sales promotion and price discounting strategy using fuzzy logic for a retail organization.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper proposes a conceptualization of the e-waste domain, formalized through a metamodel, to express complex e-waste realities in a simple manner. This also enables the transition from a structural model to a behavioral model to implement analysis techniques.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodology used is design science research (DSR), a problem-solving paradigm which seeks to construct a working artifact and prove its relevance. The artifact, a metamodel for the e-waste domain, was constructed through an iterative manner and later analyzed to conclude its theoretical relevance and contributions in this domain. As part of the approach, the authors used supplementary techniques such as systematic literature review (SLR), conceptual modeling (CM) and system dynamics (SD).

Findings

The application in the e-waste domain of CM techniques such as metamodeling, model-to-model transformation and simulation is valuable for supporting decision-making, especially when combined with SD. The approach presented in this paper, the conceptual tools and different simulation techniques could also be applied in other complex domains to obtain similar results.

Practical implications

The modeling method to apply simulation techniques is targeted toward the e-waste domain experts to understand, design, implement, measure and improve strategies and public policies.

Originality/value

The use of CM techniques to model and analyze structural and behavioral e-waste scenarios.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present the development and validation of a methodology which allows modeling and solving the inverse and direct dynamic problem in real time in robot manipulators.

Design/methodology/approach

The robot dynamic equation is based on the Gibbs‐Appell equation of motion, yielding a well‐structured set of equations that can be computed in real time. This paper deals with the implementation and calculation of the inverse and direct dynamic problem in robots, with an application to the real‐time control of a PUMA 560 industrial robot provided with an open control architecture based on an industrial personal computer.

Findings

The experimental results show the validity of the dynamic model and that the proposed resolution method for the dynamic problem in real time is suitable for control purposes.

Research limitations/implications

The accuracy of the applied friction model determines the accuracy of the identified overall model and consequently of the control. This is especially obvious in the case of the PUMA 560 robot, in which the presence of friction is remarkable in some of their joints. Hence, future work should focus on identifying a more precise friction model. The robot model could also be extended by incorporating rotor dynamics and could be applied for different robot configurations as parallel robots.

Originality/value

Gibbs‐Appell equations are used in order to develop the robotic manipulator dynamic model, instead of more usual dynamics formulations, due to several advantages that these exhibit. The obtained non‐physical identified parameters are adapted in order to enable their use in a control algorithm.

A modest attempt has been made in the study to capture the relationship between the sales promotion, price discount and the batch procurement strategy of a particular product category to maximize sales volume and profitability.

Design/methodology/approach

Findings

The model captures the lag effect of sales promotion and price discounting strategy; other strategies have been formulated based upon the sales forecast that was done for taking the lot sizing decisions regarding procurement of products in the selected category. This has helped minimize the inventory cost thereby keeping the profitability of the retail organization intact.

Research limitations/implications

Abstract

Among different BPR strategies and methodologies, one common feature is to capture existing processes and represent new processes adequately. Business process modeling plays a crucial role on such effort. This paper proposes a generic structure for modeling business processes in order to capture essential concepts of business process and represent them structurally. The generic structure possesses two main features suitable for business process modeling: one is that it can represent a business process in various concerns and multiple layers of abstraction, and the other is that it lowers the barriers between process representation and model analysis by embedding verification and validation with the model. The generic modeling method is illustrated by an order fulfillment process in supply chain networks.
