Abstract

Purpose

Comparing conventional data envelopment analysis (DEA) model with contemporary Seiford and Zhu model, this study aims to evaluate the technical efficiency (TE) of Indian banks from 1998/99 to 2016/17 in the presence of non-performing loans (NPLs).

Design/methodology/approach

To examine TE, this study has considered a novel approach, i.e. linear monotone decreasing transformation as suggested by Seiford and Zhu (2002), which treats undesirable output as a desirable output in the framework of Charnes, Cooper and Rhodes (CCR)-based output-oriented DEA approach. In particular, to remove the biasness from the estimated efficiency scores, Simar Wilson (1998, Algorithm #1) has been applied, which is perhaps the first attempt in this kind of literature till now. This study further tries to investigate the notion of sigma and unconditional β-convergence in TE using two-step system generalized method of moments model in dynamic panel framework.

Findings

Treatment of NPLs using conventional DEA model misinterprets the TE scores, while a true picture emerges when the NPLs are correctly accounted as an undesirable output in banks’ loans production process. Efficiency has declined during the crisis years, but it recovered immediately after the crisis years in India. However, a sudden and steep deterioration in efficiency scores has been seen from 2013 till the most recent study period. Public sector banks and old private banks have reported higher average efficiency scores than new private banks (NPBs) and foreign banks (FBs) in India. However, FBs are the only commercial banks that maintained their efficiency levels during crisis years in India. This study also saw the persistence and presence of σ-convergence phenomena in TE for Indian banks, reflecting the ability to reach up to “Catch-up” phenomenon owing to the lower dispersion and persistence of convergence in TE by the Indian banks.

Practical implications

The actual efficiency score can only be estimated when the NPL will be considered as an undesirable output rather than a desirable output when designing the loan production process of banks. Although the ownership clusters of all commercial banks in India need to formulate stricter policies to increase the level of assets quality and efficiency, but, NPBs need to pay some more efforts in this direction. This study’s outcome has the potential to provide useful information for regulators and policymakers, which suggests that in which direction or in which clusters improvement are needed to raise the level of asset quality and technical efficiency in the coming years.

Originality/value

For a long time, there has been the existence of trade-offs between researchers, like which is the best model for accounting for NPLs? Traditional or contemporary? Thus, our study aims to add knowledge to the limited stock of NPL modelling in the efficiency literature. Dynamic convergence in TE scores in Indian banks has yet not to be tested, which is another novelty of the study.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop an effective numerical approach to assess the nonlinear dynamic responses of a near‐bed submarine pipeline.

Design/methodology/approach

A coupled numerical approach is proposed in this paper to assess the nonlinear dynamic responses of this pipeline. The boundary‐element method is first used to get the nonlinear dynamic fluid loading induced by the asymmetric flow. The meshless technique is used to discretize the structure of the pipeline. A numerical example is first presented to verify the effectivity of the present method. Then, the coupled technique is used to simulate the nonlinear dynamic fluid‐structure interaction problem of a near‐bed pipeline. A Newton‐Raphson iteration procedure is used herein to solve the nonlinear system of equations, and the Newmark method is adopted for the time integration.

Findings

The presence of seabed results in a large negative lift on a pipeline in a horizontal current. Studies reveal that there exists a critical current velocity, above which the pipeline will become instable, and the critical velocity is significantly affected by the initial gap from the pipeline to the seabed.

Originality/value

The near‐bed submarine pipeline is a widely used structure in marine engineering. This paper originally develops a numerical approach to model this special fluid‐structure interaction problem. It has demonstrated by the examples that the present approach is very effective and has good potential in the practical applications.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present an on-line modeling and controlling scheme based on the dynamic recurrent neural network for wastewater treatment system.

Design/methodology/approach

A control strategy based on rule adaptive recurrent neural network (RARFNN) is proposed in this paper to control the dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration and nitrate nitrogen (SNo) concentration. The structure of the RARFNN is self-organized by a rule adaptive algorithm, and the rule adaptive algorithm considers the overall information processing ability of neural network. Furthermore, a stability analysis method is given to prove the convergence of the proposed RARFNN.

Findings

By application in the control problem of wastewater treatment process (WWTP), results show that the proposed control method achieves better performance compared to other methods.

Originality/value

The proposed on-line modeling and controlling method uses the RARFNN to model and control the dynamic WWTP. The RARFNN can adjust its structure and parameters according to the changes of biochemical reactions and pollutant concentrations. And, the rule adaptive mechanism considers the overall information processing ability judgment of the neural network, which can ensure that the neural network contains the information of the biochemical reactions.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper presents an analytical framework to understand the complex CSR accountability standard architecture, studying the CSR standardization cycle through the organizational studies perspective. It has two main aims: to discuss the theoretical approach to CSR governance, proposing a matrix to classify international CSR accountability standards; and to study the CSR multi-industry standardization cycle (setting and design, diffusion and implementation), creating an analytical framework to understand the innovative dynamics adopted through CSR standard-setting.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper is based on empirical research on global CSR multi-industry standards and the emergence of a regulatory dynamic based on competition-collaboration. The paper's arguments stem from a case study of the Global Reporting Initiative and its inter-linkage and convergence with the UN Global Compact and ISO 26000. The author analyzes this case based on the global governance and institutional dynamics of regulation research.

Findings

Based on the study of CSR standards, the paper presents an analytical framework with various elements to analyze CSR accountability standards: scope, type of actors, performance type and mechanisms and type of legitimacy and monitoring strategies. Second, the paper advances the study of emerging inter-linkages between GRI, UNGC and ISO 26000 and analyzes the emergence of a meta-standardization process generated by the competition-collaboration dynamic.

Research limitations/implications

Further research is needed to focus on the role of agency and different stakeholders on the meta-standardization process. Other research has to focus on the institutional logic and the multi-level analysis of the convergence between CSR standards and the self-regulation advanced process. In this respect, this research serves to demonstrate the leading innovative role adopted by private actors (mostly companies) in developing private standard setting for global governance.

Originality/value

The value of this paper is its analysis of the main convergence dynamic adopted by the most popular, global-scope CSR multi-industry standards, GRI, UNGC and ISO 26000. The findings show how this standardization cycle helps a new collaborative governance dynamic to emerge based on the adoption of private standard-setting. The paper is also useful for practitioners, helping them understand the growing convergence among CSR multi-industry standards, and how the convergence of sustainability reporting processes is advancing towards the integration and drafting of homogeneous guidelines with the prevalence of the GRI model.

Abstract

The evaluation of linear dynamic response analysis of large structures by vector superposition requires, in its traditional formulation, the solution of a large and expensive eigenvalue problem. A method of solution based on a Ritz transformation to a reduced system of generalized coordinates using load dependent vectors generated from the spatial distribution of the dynamic loads is shown to maintain the high expected accuracy of modern computer analysis and significantly reduces the execution time over eigensolution procedures. New computational variants to generate load dependent vectors are presented and error norms are developed to control the convergence characteristics of load dependent Ritz solutions. Numerical applications on simple structural systems are used to show the relative efficiency of the proposed solution procedures.

Abstract

Aims to examine the issue of industrial strategy (IS), paying particular attention to the case of Britain. Sets out to assess the possibility and nature of an industrial strategy for Britain, in Europe, and within the global scene, taking into account the world we live in as we see it. Accordingly, the perspective is driven and shaped by a quest for a realistic, feasible and sustainable industrial strategy. In order to achieve these objectives, first examines the theoretical arguments behind much of British, and more generally, Western industrial policies. Following this, outlines and assesses British industrial policy post‐Second World War then compares and contrasts British industrial policy with that of Europe, the USA, Japan and the newly industrialized countries. Then examines recent developments in economics and management which may explain the “Far Eastern” miracle, and points to the possibility of a successful, narrowly self‐interested, IS for Europe and Britain, based on the lessons from (new) theory and international experience. To assess what is possible, develops a theoretical framework linking firms in their roles as consumers and/or electors. This hints at the possibilities and limits of feasible policies. All these ignore desirability which, in the author′s view, should be seen in terms of distributional considerations, themselves contributors to sustainability. Accordingly, discusses a desirable industrial strategy for Britain in Europe which accounts for distributional considerations, and goes on to examine its implications for the issue of North‐South convergence. Concludes by pointing to the limitations of the analysis and to directions for developments.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a dynamic parameter identification method based on sensitivity analysis for the 5-degree of freedom (DOF) hybrid robots, to solve the problems of too many identification parameters, complex model, difficult convergence of optimization algorithms and easy-to-fall into a locally optimal solution, and improve the efficiency and accuracy of dynamic parameter identification.

Design/methodology/approach

First, the dynamic parameter identification model of the 5-DOF hybrid robot was established based on the principle of virtual work. Then, the sensitivity of the parameters to be identified is analyzed by Sobol’s sensitivity method and verified by simulation. Finally, an identification strategy based on sensitivity analysis was designed, experiments were carried out on the real robot and the results were verified.

Findings

Compared with the traditional full-parameter identification method, the dynamic parameter identification method based on sensitivity analysis proposed in this paper converges faster when optimized using the genetic algorithm, and the identified dynamic model has higher prediction accuracy for joint drive forces and torques than the full-parameter identification models.

Originality/value

This work analyzes the sensitivity of the parameters to be identified in the dynamic parameter identification model for the first time. Then a parameter identification method is proposed based on the results of the sensitivity analysis, which can effectively reduce the parameters to be identified, simplify the identification model, accelerate the convergence of the optimization algorithm and improve the prediction accuracy of the identified model for the joint driving forces and torques.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to extend the natural neighbour radial point interpolation method (NNRPIM) to the dynamic analysis (free vibrations and forced vibrations) of two‐dimensional, three‐dimensional and bending plate problems.

Design/methodology/approach

The NNRPIM shape‐function construction is briefly presented, as are the dynamic equations and the mode superposition method is used in the forced vibration analysis. Several benchmark examples of two‐dimensional and plate bending problems are solved and compared with the three‐dimensional NNRPIM formulation. The obtained results are compared with the available exact solutions and the finite element method (FEM) solutions.

Findings

The developed NNRPIM approach is a good alternative to the FEM for the solution of dynamic problems, once the obtained results with the EFGM shows a high similarity with the obtained FEM results and for the majority of the studied examples the NNRPIM results are more close to the exact solution results.

Research limitations/implications

Comparing the FEM and the NNRPIM, the computational cost of the NNRPIM is higher.

Originality/value

The paper demonstrates extension of the NNRPIM to the dynamic analysis of two‐dimensional, three‐dimensional and bending plate problems. The elimination of the shear‐locking phenomenon in the NNRPIM plate bending formulation. The various solved examples prove a high convergence rate and accuracy of the NNRPIM.
