Abstract

Purpose – The purpose of this paper to immobilization provides biosorbent particle with density and mechanichal strength, immobilization can save the cost of separating from biomass, can be regeneration and to increase adsorption capacity for metal ions.

Design/Methodology/Approach – The parameters affecting the adsorption, such as initial metal ion concentration, pH, contact time, and temperature, were studied. The analysis of biosorbent functional group was carried out by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, SEM-EDX, for elemental analysis.

Findings – Optimum pH condition for biosorption Cd(II) was pH 5, contact time was 45 min, and initial concentration was 250 mg/L. Biosorbent analysis was characterized using SEM-EDX and FTIR analysis. Kinetics adsorption was studied and analyzed in terms of the pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intraparticle diffusion kinetics models. The result showed that the biosorption for Cd(II) ion followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Biosorption data of Cd(II) ion at 300°K, 308°K, and 318°K was analyzed with Temkin, Langmuir, and Freundlich isotherms. Biosorption of Cd(II) by durian seed immobilization in alginate according to the Langmuir isotherm equation provided a coefficient correlation of r2 = 0.939 and maximum capacity biosorption of 25.05 mg/g.

Abstract

Purpose – The purpose of this study was to invent morphological North Aceh durian data as germplasm information.

Methodology – The research was conducted at Langkahan and Sawang, North Aceh Region, from March to August 2014. The material used was the durian plant that should be 20 years and preferred by the local community. Exploration as the first step of experiment was done by purposive sampling. Identification was done on the source of durian germplasm. The source of durian germplasm as the experimental object was observed for its growth and morphology. Data analysis for morphological characteristics was done by using NTSYSpc (Numerical Taxonomy and Multivariate Analysis) NTSYSpc versi 2.02.

Originality – The results showed that there were 25 accessions superior durian in Langkahan and 26 accessions superior durian in Sawang. They had different characters in the vegetative parts of the plant. The durian coefficient value of similarity in Langkahan ranged from 0.33 to 0.94, while in Sawang, it ranged from 0.24 to 0.86. The diversity of the morphological character in superior durian of Langkahan and Sawang was seen from the qualitative character (surface and color of bark, crown shape, top surface color of leaves, and leaf shape) and quantitative character (plant height, stem diameter, crown diameter, length, width, and leaf area).

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to determine the physicochemical and rheological parameters of Albizia lebbeck gum.

Design/methodology/approach

Physicochemical analysis was carried out using recommended methods. Gas chromatography mass spectrophotometer and Fourier transformed infra red (FTIR) analyses were carried out using their respective spectrophotometer. Scanning electron microscopy was carried out using scanning electron microscope, while rheological measurements were carried out using Ubbelohde capillary viscometer, digital Brookfield DV 1 viscometer and a rheometer.

Findings

Albizia zygia gum is an ionic gum with unique physical and chemical properties. Scanning electron micrograph revealed that the internal structure of the gum is porous with irregular molecular arrangement. Thermodynamic parameters of viscous flow indicated the existence of few inter- and intra-molecular interactions, and the attainment of transition state was linked to bond breaking. Coil overlap transition studies revealed the existence of dilute and concentrated regimes. The viscosity of the gum was also found to decrease with decrease in the charge of cation (such that Al3+ > Ca2+ > K+) and with increase in ionic strength.

Research limitations/implications

The paper provided information on physicochemical and rheological characteristics/behaviour of Albizia zygia gum, of Nigerian origin. From this information, possible application of this gum in the food and pharmaceutical industries can be deduced.

Originality/value

The paper is original since information concerning Albizia zygia gum of Nigerian origin are not well documented as established in the work. It also adds values on the use of Albizia zygia gum, either on its own or in combination with other gums for industrial purpose.

Abstract

Integrated pest management (IPM) is a well‐known innovation that accords with modern environmental management “best practice”. In this paper it is examined as an example of the theory and practice underpinning workplace learning and andragogy. Particular attention is focused on the role of agricultural extension workers (AEWs) as learning facilitators in a non‐formal setting. As contextual background, a recent IPM diffusion project in a region of Thailand, where durian is extensively grown, as a process of innovation adoption is outlined. In sum, the intelligent way IPM knowledge was transferred, though the mediating role of AEWs reflected the current emphasis on collaborative partnerships in “real‐life” workplace learning contexts as an effective means of managing change in complex environments.
