Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present the design of a compact microstrip bandpass filter (BPF) in dual-mode configuration loaded with cross-loop and square ring slots on a square patch resonator for C-band applications.

Design/methodology/approach

In the proposed design, the dual-mode response for the filter is realized with two transmission zeros (TZs) by the insertion of a perturbation element at the diagonal corner of the square patch resonator with orthogonal feed lines. Such TZs at the edges of the passband result in better selectivity for the proposed BPF. Moreover, the cross-loop and square ring slots are etched on a square patch resonator to obtain a miniaturized BPF.

Findings

The proposed dual-mode microstrip filter fabricated in RT/duroid 6010 substrate using PCB technology has a measured minimum insertion loss of 1.8 dB and return loss better than 24.5 dB with a fractional bandwidth (FBW) of 6.9%. A compact size of 7.35 × 7.35 mm2 is achieved for the slotted patch resonator-based dual-mode BPF at the center frequency of 4.76 GHz. As compared with the conventional square patch resonator, a size reduction of 61% is achieved with the proposed slotted design. The feasibility of the filter design is confirmed by the good agreement between the measured and simulated responses. The performance of the proposed filter structure is compared with other dual-mode filter works.

Originality/value

In the proposed work, a compact dual-mode BPF is reported with slotted structures. The conventional square patch resonator is deployed with cross-loop and square ring slots to design a dual-mode filter with a square perturbation element at its diagonal corner. The proposed filter exhibits compact size and favorable performance compared to other dual-mode filter works reported in literature. The aforementioned design of the dual-mode BPF at 4.76 GHz is suitable for applications in the lower part of the C-band.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a dual-mode online optimization method (OOM) for trajectory tracking of the redundant manipulators. This method could be used to resolve the problem of the kinematics redundancy effectively when the manipulator moves in a limited space or its movements go through a singular point.

Design/methodology/approach

In the proposed method, the physical limits of the manipulator in the torque level is considered as inequality constraints for the optimal scheme. Besides, a dual-mode optimal scheme is developed to yield a feasible input in each control period during the path tracking task of the manipulator, especially when it moves under the limited space or around the singular point. Then, the scheme is formulated as a quadratic programming; the computationally efficient quadratic programming solver based on interior method is formulated to solve the kinematic redundancy problem.

Findings

The traditional pseudo inverse method (PIM) for the kinematic resolution to the redundant manipulator has some limitations, such as slow computation speed, unable to take joint physical limits into consideration, etc. Relatively, the OOM could be used to conquer the deficits of the PIM method. Combining with the dual-mode optimal scheme and considering the physical constraints in the torque level, the online method proposed in this paper is more robust and efficient than the existing method.

Originality/value

In this paper, dual-mode OOM is first proposed for the resolution of the kinematics redundancy problem. Specific design of its model and the discussion of its performance are also presented in this paper.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a dual-mode proximity sensor composed of inductive and capacitive sensing modes, which can help the robot distinguish different objects and obtain distance information at the same time. A systematic study of sensor response to various objects and the function of cooperation sensing is needed. Furthermore, the application in the field of robotic area needs to be discussed.

Design/methodology/approach

Numerical modeling of each sensing modes and simulations based on finite element analysis method has been carried out to verify the designed dual-mode sensor. A number of objects composed of different materials are used to research the cooperation perception and proximity sensing functions. In addition, the proposed sensor is used on the palm of a mechanical hand as application experiment.

Findings

The characteristics of the sensor are summarized as follows: the sensing range of inductive mode is 0-5.6 mm for detecting a copper block and the perceive range of capacitive mode is 0-5.1 mm for detecting a plastic block. The collaborative perceive tests validated that the non-ferromagnetism metals can be distinguished by inductive mode. Correspondingly, ferromagnetism metals and dielectric objects are differentiated by capacitive mode. Application experiments results reveal that both plastic bottle and steel bottle could be detected and differentiated. The experimental results are in agreement with those of simulations.

Originality value

This paper provides a study of dual-mode proximity sensor in terms of design, experiments and application.

Abstract

Purpose

Focusing on the global trade collapse and the subsequent recovery period, the purpose of this paper is to examine the export performance of firms that are involved in complex internationalization strategies.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors use a random-effects probit model with panel data and a dynamic panel data model (GMM system) for Spanish manufacturing firms from 2006 to 2013 period.

Findings

It is found that, once firm characteristics are controlled for, complex internationalization plays an important role in continuing to export and, additionally, positively influences the level of exports. Firms active in a complex mix of internationalization strategies have an added advantage, which enables them to confront the uncertainty of foreign markets in better conditions and translates to a lower likelihood of ceasing exporting and to higher export values.

Practical implications

The present paper throws light on this question by showing that the negative impact of trade collapse in 2009 on the export level was lower for firms inserted in complex internationalization strategies and the subsequent recovery was more intense.

Originality/value

The analysis goes one step further and investigates whether the impact is different during the trade collapse in 2009 and the following recovery. Here, previous empirical research at firm level on the role of complex internationalization strategies in trade is contradictory.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to design a dual mode X-band substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) bandpass filter in the conventional SIW structure. A pair of back-to-back square and split ring resonator is introduced in the single-layer SIW bandpass filter. The various coupling configurations of SIW bandpass filter using split square ring slot resonator is designed to obtain dual resonant mode in the passband. It is shown that the measured results agree with the simulated results to meet compact size, lower the transmission coefficient, better reflection coefficient, sharp sideband rejection and minimal group delay.

Design/methodology/approach

A spurious suppression of wideband response is suppressed using an open stub in the transmission line. The width and length of the stub are tuned to suppress the wideband spurs in the stopband. The measured 3 dB bandwidth is from 8.76 to 14.24 GHz with a fractional bandwidth of 48.04% at a center frequency of 11.63 GHz, 12.59 GHz. The structure is analyzed using the equivalent circuit model, and the simulated analysis is based on an advanced design system software.

Findings

This paper discusses the characteristics of resonator below the waveguide cut-off frequency with their working principles and applications. Considering the difficulties in combining the resonators with a metallic waveguide, a new guided wave structure – the SIW is designed, which is synthesized on a planar substrate with linear periodic arrays of metallized via based on the printed circuit board.

Originality/value

This study has investigated the wave propagation problem of the SIW loaded by square ring slot-loaded resonator. The electric dipole nature of the resonator has been used to achieve a forward passband in a waveguide environment. The proposed filters have numerous advantages such as high-quality factor, low insertion loss, easy to integrate with the other planar circuits and, most importantly, compact size.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper is aimed to study the design of a miniaturized filter with tri-band characteristics. In this paper, perturbation is used to realize circuit miniaturization and multi-band by exploiting the inductive property. During this process, vias are added for twofold benefit, namely, circuit miniaturization and enhanced frequency selectivity at high frequency. Thus, with the introduction of the shorting via, the single-band dual-mode bandpass filter is converted into a tri-band filter with a smaller electrical size.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper presents the design and characterization of a miniaturized two-port filter with tri-band operating characteristics. The proposed filter is constructed using a square patch resonator operating at 5.2 GHz with a capacitively coupled feed configuration. A square perturbation is added to the corner of the square patch to achieve diagonal symmetry and to excite dual mode. The perturbation offers a sharp transmission zero defining bandwidth of the proposed filter. In addition, a shorting post is introduced to achieve an 88% size reduction by lowering the operating frequency to 1.8 GHz.

Findings

The prototype filter has insertion less than 1.2 dB and return loss better than 12 dB throughout all the realized frequency bands. The prototype filter is fabricated and the simulation results are validated using experimental measurements. The realized fractional bandwidths of the proposed bandpass filter are 11/5.6/1 at 1.8/4.6/5.85 GHz, respectively. The quality factor of the proposed antenna is greater than 80 and a peak Q-factor of 387 is realized at 5.85 GHz. The high Q-factor indicates low loss and improved selectivity. The rejection levels in the stopband are greater than 20 dB.

Originality/value

The results indicate that the proposed filter is a suitable choice for low-power small-scale wireless systems operating in the microwave bands. The realized filter has the smallest footprint of 0.36λeff  × 0.19λeff where λeff is the effective wavelength calculated at the lowest frequency of operation.

Abstract

Purpose

Applying media synchronicity theory (MST) as a theoretical foundation, this paper aims to examine whether teams using multiple communication modes perform better on a complex intra-team task than those using a single mode.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors adopted a mixed-methods explanatory design. Data were collected from 44 teams directly following participation in the Everest Leadership and Team Simulation. Teams were assigned a specific mode of communication: virtual (text-chat only), face-to-face (FTF) or dual (FTF and chat).

Findings

No significant differences in team goals achieved were found when comparing dual modes to single modes, counter to predictions based on MST. Qualitative data indicated that FTF communication is dominant and might lead to “medium inertia” when multiple modes are available. FTF teams reported higher perceptions of team effectiveness than text-chat-only teams.

Research limitations/implications

This study was conducted on a small number of teams in an artificial environment; therefore, generalizability is limited. Future research should consider other measures of team performance and test teams in a virtual setting where distance, as well as time, are factors.

Practical implications

FTF communication tends to be dominant to a point where virtual options are ignored, suggesting that greater awareness around communication processes required for complex tasks, and ways to appropriate different media for conveyance or convergence, is key to team performance.

Originality/value

This study highlights the importance of determining processes by which teams shift between media to maximize conveyance and convergence processes. Additionally, distinguishing between objective performance and perceptions of performance highlight an additional challenge for teams that can be explored.

Purpose

The paper aims to design of dual-mode boost converter with integrated low-voltage control circuit is introduced in this paper. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

The converter is operated either with LC filter or with charge pump circuit by the switch control. The control stage with error amplifier, comparator, and oscillator is designed with the supply voltage of 3.3 V and the operating frequency of 5.5 MHz. The compensator circuit exploits a pole compensation for a stable operation.

Findings

The simulation test in 0.35 μm CMOS process shows that the charge pump regulator and DC-DC boost converter are accurately controlled with the variation of number of stages and duty ratio. The output-voltage is obtained to be 6-15 V within the ripple ratio of 5 percent. Maximum power consumption is about 0.65 W.

Originality/value

This dual-mode is useful in the converter with a wide load-current variation. The advantage of the dual-mode converter is that it can be used in either high or low load current with a simple switch control. Furthermore, in charge pump regulator, there is no degradation of output voltage because of the feedback control circuit.

Purpose

This paper aims to address the spacecraft attitude regulation problem in the presence of extrinsic disturbances and actuator faults.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on adaptive backstepping design technique, a new concise adaptive dual-mode control scheme is proposed, which can either use the fault information detected by fault diagnosis mechanisms or switch to the fault-unknown mode when the fault diagnosis information is non-existent for control signal generation. These two modes share an adaptive mechanism that reduces the complexity of the algorithm.

Findings

The new fault-tolerant attitude control algorithm can accommodate both modes with and without fault diagnosis mechanisms.

Originality/value

The proposed algorithm in this paper can be applied to both cases when the attitude control system is equipped with or without fault diagnosis capability. This also enhances the robustness of attitude control algorithm. This study performs numerical simulations and verifies that the algorithm could effectively adapt to both modes.
