Abstract

This chapter examines the lack of diversification in higher education administration and specifically focuses on the scarcity of women of color in formal, high-level positions of leadership at predominantly White Institutions (PWIs) in the United States. Four main questions fuel the discussion: (1) What theoretical definitions are useful for understanding the social constructed meanings of women of color? (2) How does the concept of stereotypes contribute to the underrepresentation of women of color in higher education administration? (3) How do leadership paradigms and subsequent theories influence perceptions of leadership? and (4) What leadership paradigms and theories better address the exclusion of women of color from decision-making positions of leadership in higher education and therefore take into consideration dimensions of diversity and the changing face of leadership?

Abstract

Murder is overwhelmingly a male affair (UNODC Global Study on Homicide, 2019). So, when women kill, their crimes gain a lot of attention and even more hysteria in both courts and media. This chapter will analyse the cases of Sally Challen, Belinda van Krevel and Maxine Carr to show that portrayals of women who are involved in killing exist on a continuum, from abused victims to those simply ‘born evil’ to the incomprehension of those whose crimes render them outside society altogether; or in simple terms, from sad, to bad, to mad. In all cases, the agency of the women is presented as incomplete or impossible, indicating our inability in heteropatriarchy to acknowledge that women are as capable as men of exhibiting the full spectrum of human behaviour. Denying agency, particularly to violent women, allows Western societies to avoid having to face and thus, attempt to understand, the female capacity for aggression.

Abstract

India faces a critical phase of its post-independence existence with an alarming besiege of hostile states and violent non-state actors. The existential security predicament has emerged in an irony that features India’s steady and solid economic growth and development. Despite the robustness of the economic and strategic macro-fundamentals, India is in the throes of a critical siege of violent asymmetric conflict in a South Asian region besieged by state-failure and economic fatigue. A United States and allied strategic dilemmas vacillate in Afghanistan, a Pakistan in the throes of a new round of critical internal destabilisation with a massive spurt in radicalisation threatening to engulf the Afghanistan–Pakistan region and a China that exploits India’s unsettled boundary issues leveraging support to Pakistan, all present India its double jeopardy.

The employ of the term ‘Double-Jeopardy’ is a legalistic term that connotes that a person cannot be penalised twice for the same crime. The employ of ‘Double-Jeopardy’ in this analysis reflects India’s existential threats of violent asymmetric conflict and its pathological consequences and the perilous impact of nuclear weapons associated with such groups and their state sponsors.

This chapter endeavours to examine (a) India’s critical security vulnerabilities and responses emergent from the worsening Afghanistan–Pakistan situation; (b) the consequences of a US retreat from Afghanistan and the Chinese assertive rise in the South Asian region; (c) critical imperatives and operational safeguards in India’s nuclear security; and (d) future pathways of India in the region.

Both declining job security and the need for dual careers constitute two complicating factors in the lives of middle-class American families. Rarely, however, are these two phenomena investigated simultaneously. Drawing on both survey and in-depth interview data of a sample of middle-class couples in upstate New York, we document the pervasiveness of couple-level job insecurity, and the extents at-risk couples anticipate job loss and employers prepare workers for job termination. We argue that the new middle-class job insecurity is effectively doubled for dual-earner couples, reshaping the temporalities of career development across the life course.

This essay explores a radical shift in how the relationship between the power to punish and sovereignty has been conceived in modern American law; specifically focusing on the quiet death of comity as an operative principle in the exercise of criminal jurisdiction. While this essay attends to certain legal issues arising from historical intersections of federal, state and Indian sovereignty in the field of criminal law, this essay is not an attempt to directly evaluate the history of federal policies applied to Indian tribes or tribal lands. Nor is this essay in any strict sense a legal history of federal-tribal relations, or federal penal policy in relation to Indian tribes. Rather, I am concerned here with a series of liminal moments in the American legal tradition in which the power to punish came to be understood ever more one-sidedly, as an atomizing attribute of sovereignty rather than an identifying feature of community within a pluralistic legal framework.

Abstract

We stand on the shoulders of our predecessors is the motto for women of color as they navigate the waters of higher education. Success now and the promise for the future in this journey for women of color in higher education is only possible because of the struggles and obstacles faced by those before trying to gain entry into the academy, typically reserved for white males. The waters in the past have been turbulent because of the chilly climate faced by many women faculty and marginalization of faculty of color in the academy. Women of color faced double and triple jeopardy due to the pernicious effects of racism, sexism, and classism as they strived to ascend to positions of leadership. They made history for themselves as they paved the way for others to follow. With so many more women of color today as students and faculty, and even in leadership roles, they are still underrepresented and not part of the privileged elite that define the ranks of leadership within higher education.

Abstract

Purpose

This chapter assesses how gender and disability status intersect to shape employment and earnings outcomes for working-age adults in the United States.

Methodology/approach

The research pools five years of data from the 2010–2015 Current Population Survey to compare employment and earnings outcomes for men and women with different types of physical and cognitive disabilities to those who specifically report work-limiting disabilities.

Findings

The findings show that people with different types of limitations, including those not specific to work, experienced large disparities in employment and earnings and these outcomes also varied for men and women. The multiplicative effects of gender and disability on labor market outcomes led to a hierarchy of disadvantage where women with cognitive or multiple disabilities experienced the lowest employment rates and earnings levels. However, within groups, disability presented the strongest negative effects for men, which created a smaller gender wage gap among people with disabilities.

Originality/value

This chapter provides quantitative evidence for the multiplicative effects of gender and disability status on employment and earnings. It further extends an intersectional framework by highlighting the gendered aspects of the ways in which different disabilities shape labor market inequalities. Considering multiple intersecting statuses demonstrates how the interaction between disability type and gender produce distinct labor market outcomes.

Abstract

Purpose: This paper aims to gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between gendered ageism and sustainable work in Croatian context through the perspective of the founders of the Association of Women 50+, the first association which gathers women aged 50 and above in the Republic of Croatia.

Method: Using a case study approach, semi-structured interviews with four founders of the Association of Women 50+ were conducted and the questions were divided into three sets. The Transcripts were analysed through unitising data and then the answers were fit into those three sets.

Findings: Gendered ageism represents a serious obstacle to employability and work progression for older women. Looking at the gendered ageism in the realm of the workplace through the eyes of four women, founders of Association of Women 50+, the first association in the Republic of Croatia which empowers women aged 50 and above discovers that gender ageism must not be ignored.

Research limitations: The results derived from this case study cannot be generalised since they are based on a single case in one country and the interview sample is small.

Social implications: The results derived from this case study can serve as a valuable resource for national political decision-makers to get a deeper understanding of the relationship between gendered ageism and sustainable work in the Republic of Croatia.

Originality/value of paper: The paper represents the first research on the relationship between gendered ageism and sustainable work in the Republic of Croatia for women aged 50 and above.
