Abstract

Purpose

Present investigation conducts a study on the hydrothermal features of a double flow Parabolic Trough Solar Collector (PTSC) equipped with sinusoidal-wavy grooved absorber tube and twisted tape insert filled with nanofluid. This paper aims to present an effectual PTSC which is comprised by nanofluid numerically by means of finite volume method.

Design/methodology/approach

The beneficial results such as pressure drop inside the absorber tube, mean predicted friction factor, predicted average Nusselt number and hydrothermal Performance Evaluation Criteria (PEC) are evaluated and reported to present the influences of numerous factors on studied interest outcomes. Effects of different Reynolds numbers and environmental conditions are also determined in this investigation.

Findings

It is found that using the absorber roof (canopy) can enhance the heat transfer ratio of PTSCs significantly during all studied Reynolds numbers. Also, it is realized that the combination of inner grooved surface, outer corrugated surface and inserting turbulator can improve the thermal-hydraulic characteristics of PTSCs sharply.

Originality/value

Novel PTSC (N.PTSC) filling with two Heat Transfer Fluids (HTFs), inner and outer surface corrugated absorber tube, absorber roof and inserting twisted tape (N.PTSC.f) has the highest PEC values among all novel configurations along all investigated Reynolds numbers which is followed by configurations N.PTSC with two HTFs and inserting twisted tape (N.PTSC.e), N.PTSC with two HTFs and outer surface corrugated absorber tube (N.PTSC.b) and N.PTSC with two HTFs and inner surface corrugated absorber tube (N.PTSC.c), respectively. N.PTSC.f Nusselt number values can overcome the high values of friction factor, and therefore is introduced as the most efficient model in the current study.

Abstract

Numerical methods are used to solve double diffusion driven reactive flow transport problems in deformable fluid‐saturated porous media. In particular, the temperature dependent reaction rate in the non‐equilibrium chemical reactions is considered. A general numerical solution method, which is a combination of the finite difference method in FLAC and the finite element method in FIDAP, to solve the fully coupled problem involving material deformation, pore‐fluid flow, heat transfer and species transport/chemical reactions in deformable fluid‐saturated porous media has been developed. The coupled problem is divided into two sub‐problems which are solved interactively until the convergence requirement is met. Owing to the approximate nature of the numerical method, it is essential to justify the numerical solutions through some kind of theoretical analysis. This has been highlighted in this paper. The related numerical results, which are justified by the theoretical analysis, have demonstrated that the proposed solution method is useful for and applicable to a wide range of fully coupled problems in the field of science and engineering.

Abstract

Purpose

This study comprehensively examines entropy generation and thermosolutal performance of a ternary hybrid nanofluid in a partially active porous cabinet. The purpose of this study is to comprehend the intricate phenomena of double diffusion by investigating the dispersion behavior of Al2O3, CuO, and Ag nanoparticles in water.

Design/methodology/approach

The cabinet design consists of two horizontal walls and two curved walls with the lower border divided into a heated and concentrated region of length b and the remaining sections are adiabatic. The vertical borders are cold and low concentration, while the upper border is adiabatic. Two cavity configurations such as convex and concave are considered. A uniform porous medium is taken within the ternary hybrid nanofluid. This has been characterized by the Brinkman-extended Darcy model. Thermosolutal phenomena are governed by the Navier-Stokes equations and are solved by adopting a higher-order compact scheme.

Findings

The present study focuses on exploring the influence of several well-defined parameters, including Rayleigh number, Darcy number, Lewis number, Buoyancy ratio number, nanoparticle volume concentration and heater size. The results indicate that the ternary hybrid nanofluid outperforms both the mono and hybrid nanofluids in all considered aspects.

Originality/value

This study brings forth a significant contribution by uncovering novel flow features that have previously remained unexplored. By addressing a well-defined problem, the work provides valuable insights into the enhancement of thermal transport, with direct implications for diverse engineering devices such as solar collectors, heat exchangers and microelectronics.

Abstract

Purpose

The problem aims to find the effects of coupled cross-diffusion in micropolar fluid oversaturated porous medium, subjected to Double-Diffusive Chandrasekhar convection.

Design/methodology/approach

Normal mode and perturbation technique have been employed to determine the critical Rayleigh number. Non-linear analysis is carried out by deriving the Lorenz equations using truncated Fourier series representation. Heat and Mass transport are quantified by Nusselt and Sherwood numbers, respectively.

Findings

Analysis related to the effects of various parameters is plotted, and the results for the same are interpreted. It is observed from the results that the Dufour parameter and Soret parameter have an opposite influence on the system of cross-diffusion.

Originality/value

The effect of the magnetic field on the onset of double-diffusive convection in a porous medium coupled with cross-diffusion in a micropolar fluid is studied for the first time.

Abstract

As a first example of the application of the cut‐out procedure to fuselage problems and the selection of appropriate cut systems, the elimination of a complete ring is discussed in detail. ‘Minimal’, ‘maximal’ and ‘dismembering’ techniques are all applied to singly and doubly connected rings, and attention is drawn to some inadmissible and critical combinations of cuts in order to guide the most effective choice. The second fuselage example treats similarly the removal of a portion only of the ring.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to provide a limited, but selective bibliography on modelling heat and mass transfer in composite fluid‐porous domains.

Design/methodology/approach

Since the pioneer study by Beavers and Joseph, the problem of interface continuity and/or jump conditions at a fluid‐porous interface has been of interest to the fluid mechanics and heat and mass transfer community. The paper is concerned both with numerical simulations of heat and fluid flow in such systems, and with the linear stability problems.

Findings

The one‐ and two‐domain formulations are equivalent. Using the Darcy‐Brinkman extension instead of the Darcy model reduces the number of ad hoc parameters in this configuration.

Research limitations/implications

The problem of double diffusive convection has still to be solved and analyzed.

Practical implications

The discussion on the interface conditions is of great relevance to many industrial and practical situations.

Originality/value

The important question of the macroscopic formulation of the problem is tackled in the paper.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to assess steady, two-dimensional natural convection flow of a viscoelastic, incompressible, electrically conducting and optically thick heat-radiating nanofluid over a linearly stretching sheet in the presence of uniform transverse magnetic field taking Dufour and Soret effects into account.

Design/methodology/approach

The governing boundary layer equations are transformed into a set of highly non-linear ordinary differential equations using suitable similarity transforms. Finite element method is used to solve this boundary value problem. Effects of pertinent flow parameters on the velocity, temperature, solutal concentration and nanoparticle concentration are described graphically. Also, effects of pertinent flow parameters on the shear stress, rate of heat transfer, rate of solutal concentration and rate of nanoparticle concentration at the sheet are discussed with the help of numerical values presented in graphical form. All numerical results for mono-diffusive nanofluid are compared with those of double-diffusive nanofluid.

Findings

Numerical results obtained in this paper are compared with earlier published results and are found to be in excellent agreement. Viscoelasticity, magnetic field and nanoparticle buoyancy parameter tend to enhance the wall velocity gradient, whereas thermal buoyancy force has a reverse effect on it. Radiation, Brownian and thermophoretic diffusions tend to reduce wall temperature gradient, whereas viscoelasticity has a reverse effect on it. Nanofluid Lewis number tends to enhance wall nanoparticle concentration gradient.

Originality/value

Study of this problem may find applications in engineering and biomedical sciences,e.g. in cooling and process industries and in cancer therapy.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to address various works on mixed convection and proposes 10 unified models (Models 1–10) based on various thermal and kinematic conditions of the boundary walls, thermal conditions and/ or kinematics of objects embedded in the cavities and kinematics of external flow field through the ventilation ports. Experimental works on mixed convection have also been addressed.

Design/methodology/approach

This review is based on 10 unified models on mixed convection within cavities. Models 1–5 involve mixed convection based on the movement of single or double walls subjected to various temperature boundary conditions. Model 6 elucidates mixed convection due to the movement of single or double walls of cavities containing discrete heaters at the stationary wall(s). Model 7A focuses mixed convection based on the movement of wall(s) for cavities containing stationary solid obstacles (hot or cold or adiabatic) whereas Model 7B elucidates mixed convection based on the rotation of solid cylinders (hot or conductive or adiabatic) within the cavities enclosed by stationary or moving wall(s). Model 8 is based on mixed convection due to the flow of air through ventilation ports of cavities (with or without adiabatic baffles) subjected to hot and adiabatic walls. Models 9 and 10 elucidate mixed convection due to flow of air through ventilation ports of cavities involving discrete heaters and/or solid obstacles (conductive or hot) at various locations within cavities.

Findings

Mixed convection plays an important role for various processes based on convection pattern and heat transfer rate. An important dimensionless number, Richardson number (Ri) identifies various convection regimes (forced, mixed and natural convection). Generalized models also depict the role of “aiding” and “opposing” flow and combination of both on mixed convection processes. Aiding flow (interaction of buoyancy and inertial forces in the same direction) may result in the augmentation of the heat transfer rate whereas opposing flow (interaction of buoyancy and inertial forces in the opposite directions) may result in decrease of the heat transfer rate. Works involving fluid media, porous media and nanofluids (with magnetohydrodynamics) have been highlighted. Various numerical and experimental works on mixed convection have been elucidated. Flow and thermal maps associated with the heat transfer rate for a few representative cases of unified models [Models 1–10] have been elucidated involving specific dimensionless numbers.

Originality/value

This review paper will provide guidelines for optimal design/operation involving mixed convection processing applications.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to numerically study the unsteady double-diffusive mixed convective stagnation-point flow of a water-based nanofluid accompanied with one salt past a vertical flat plate. The effects of Brownian motion and thermophoresis parameters are also introduced through Buongiorno’s two-component nonhomogeneous equilibrium model in the governing equations.

Design/methodology/approach

In the present explanation of double-diffusive mixed convective model, there are four boundary layers entitled: velocity, thermal, solutal concentration and nanoparticle concentration. The resulting basic equations are solved numerically via an efficient Runge–Kutta fourth-order method with shooting technique after the governing nonlinear partial differential equations are converted into a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations by the use of similarity transformations.

Findings

To avail the physical insight of problem, the effects of the mixed convection parameter, unsteadiness parameter and salt/nanoparticle parameters on the boundary layers behavior are investigated. Moreover, four possible types of diffusion problems entitled: double-diffusive nanofluid (DDNF), double-diffusive regular fluid (DDRF), mono-diffusive nanofluid (MDNF) and mono-diffusive regular fluid (MDRF) are considered to analyze and compare them in concepts of heat and mass transfer.

Originality/value

The results demonstrate that, for a regular fluid, without nanoparticle and salt (MDRF), the dimensionless heat transfer rate is smaller than other diffusion cases. As we include nanoparticle and salt (DDNF), the rate of heat transfer increases due to an increase in thermal conductivity and rate of diffusion of salt. Moreover, it is observed that the highest heat transfer rate is obtained for the situation that the thermophoretic effect of nanoparticles is negligible. Besides, the heat transfer rate enhances with the increase in the regular double-diffusive buoyancy parameter of salt.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a practical way to create three kinds of double emulsions such as double emulsion, double-component double emulsion and viscoelastic double emulsion.

Design/methodology/approach

A hierarchical T-junction microfluidic device is selected to simulate this phenomenon. A system of the three-phase flows consists of the inner, middle and outer phases were simulated by the direct numerical simulation (DNS) method. The dripping regime is considered for the droplet formation in both T-junctions. The adaptive mesh refinement technique is used to simulate the droplet formation and determine the interface rupture.

Findings

The one-step and two-step encapsulation are used to create the double emulsion and the viscoelastic double emulsion, respectively. In both T-junctions, droplets are created by the balance of three parameters which are instability, viscous drag and pressure buildup. The one-step formation of double emulsion is presented for encapsulates the viscoelastic fluid.

Originality/value

The simulated hierarchical microchannel shows some desirable features for creating the complex compounds. The encapsulation process is simulated in micro-scale that is useful for drug delivery applications.
