Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this paper was to focus on China’s economic integration with Asia region and the world. It also attempts to find the long-run relation with short-run dynamics of China’s trade in Asia and the world.

Design/methodology/approach

The augmented Dickey–Fuller and Phillips–Perron methods are applied to test the time-series properties of the variables. Co-integration technique is used to detect the economic integration of China’s export to the USA and its import from Asian nations using monthly aggregate data from December 2005 to July 2010.

Findings

This study observed that empirically China’s export to the USA depends on exchange rate and China’s import from Asia depends on China’s export to the USA. China has double role in international trade – China acts as an attractor of all inputs from Asia, and China exports the final products in international market. This study also reveals that the speed of China’s import from Asia is faster than that of China’s export to the USA.

Research limitations/implications

This study has some limitation in terms of data availability, and choice of methodology like the Gravity model

Practical implications

The results imply that China’s trade should be treated as an engine of growth in the Asian developing countries and the trade promotion policies should be encouraged. The emerging China will create other opportunities through trade integration with Asia and the world.

Social implications

These empirical findings will help policy-makers formulate their policy and design the mechanism for application as per their targets.

Originality/value

China is economically integrated with the region and the world. The paper contributes to measure the speed of China’s export and import in short run within Asia and the world. These empirical findings will help policy-makers to formulate their policy and design the mechanism for application as per their targets.

Abstract

This study consists of an examination of productivity growth following three major technological breakthroughs: the steam power revolution, electrification and the ICT revolution. The distinction between sectors producing and sectors using the new technology is emphasized. A major finding for all breakthroughs is that there is a long lag from the time of the original invention until a substantial increase in the rate of productivity growth can be observed. There is also strong evidence of rapid price decreases for steam engines, electricity, electric motors and ICT products. However, there is no persuasive direct evidence that the steam engine producing industry and electric machinery had particularly high productivity growth rates. For the ICT revolution the highest productivity growth rates are found in the ICT-producing industries. We suggest that one explanation could be that hedonic price indexes are not used for the steam engine and the electric motor. Still, it is likely that the rate of technological development has been much more rapid during the ICT revolution compared to any of the previous breakthroughs.

Abstract

The Web is a communication and information technology that is often used for the distribution and retrieval of personal information. Many people and organizations mount Web sites containing large amounts of information on individuals, particularly about celebrities. However, limited studies have examined how people search for information on other people, using personal names, via Web search engines. Explores the nature of personal name searching on Web search engines. The specific research questions addressed in the study are: “Do personal names form a major part of queries to Web search engines?”; “What are the characteristics of personal name Web searching?”; and “How effective is personal name Web searching?”. Random samples of queries from two Web search engines were analyzed. The findings show that: personal name searching is a common but not a major part of Web searching with few people seeking information on celebrities via Web search engines; few personal name queries include double quotations or additional identifying terms; and name searches on Alta Vista included more advanced search features relative to those on AlltheWeb.com. Discusses the implications of the findings for Web searching and search engines, and further research.

IT does not require a very large crystal ball to envisage the growth of aviation during the next fifteen years. Sea travel has become too slow; air travel has become reliable and more independent of weather conditions; world trade has forced travel into the remotest areas; industrial countries have become more affluent, and the urge for private world travel has accompanied affluence. It is not surprising, therefore, to hear the Chairman of the British Airport Authority, Peter Masefield, predict a fifteenfold growth in air traffic in the United Kingdom during the next twenty years and to find the F.A.A. confidently anticipating a doubling of passenger traffic in five years and a nine‐fold increase in small jets in the same period.

Abstract

Based on a lecture prepared as part of the celebration of Cranfield University's 50th anniversary. After briefly reviewing the early years, including Cranfield University's entry into this technology, discusses the nature of this industry, Some of the technology drivers, including environmental concerns, are examined to provide a background against which the development and the future of the industry can be considered. This is followed by a brief survey of some of the possible new civil aero gas turbine applications over the next 50 years, both the very likely and some curiosities. Finally, the changes that are likely to occur within the industry as a result of wider economic and political trends are considered, as well as the implications for those working within the industry. The development of the civil aero gas turbine has contributed, in large measure, to today's, US$ 300 billion civil aviation industry and is rightly seen as one of mankind's major engineering achievements. A single paper cannot do justice to this industry.

Abstract

Looks at an aircraft engine manufacturer’s use of an electronic system to enhance an existing product. During the early 1990s Rolls‐Royce studied the changing military market and compared its range of engines with potential business opportunities. The trainer/light combat powerplant was one area where there was potential to develop its position. As a result of the continuing success of the BAe Hawk and Boeing Goshawk aircraft and the expectation of new sales well into the next century, the decision was taken to launch a new version of the Adour engine. Thus in 1996 Rolls‐Royce launched the Adour 900, based on the current, well‐proven Mark 871, but offering thrust growth, improved life cycle costs and enhanced functionality. Central to the concept of the Adour 900 is a new Full Authority Digital Engine Controller with integrated Engine Health Monitoring. Examines the features of the FADEC and EHM System, showing how they have been tailored to meet the needs of a modern trainer aircraft without sacrificing retrofit capability. Attention is also given to the development process which had to ensure the demanding design targets were met within the cost and timescale constraints.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the rationale for the lack of growth in the two‐wheeler service sector despite an exponential growth in the number of two‐wheelers on Indian roads.

Design/methodology/approach

The data of a premier manufacturer were gathered to develop a system dynamics model. Policy experimentation was carried out after validating the model.

Findings

The results corroborate that a mere increase in the number of facilities is inadequate for sustainable growth. Improving service quality is vital for sustainable growth of the service sector.

Practical implications

The system dynamics model unveils facts that otherwise would remain obscured. It is very useful for real‐world managers in carrying out policy experimentation to understand the effect of one variable on the other. Managers can design effective policies only through double‐loop learning.

Originality/value

The complexity of the system increases as the business grows. Managers need to adopt double‐loop learning to achieve true growth in capacity, revenue, and the bottom line. The paper demonstrates the essence of double‐loop learning in the two‐wheeler service sector.
