Abstract

Explains the implications of available options in solid state imaging sensors. Focuses on features of different types of imaging sensor, citing the most general division between types as being between area scan and line scan. Looks in some depth at these two types of sensor and goes on to consider factors such as asynchronous triggering, the separation of exposure and readout time and the maintenance of spatial digitization. Provides a list of supplier addresses.

Fingerprints have been used to identify people for 100 years, and as a form of authentication for almost two centuries. Today’s computer and communications oriented world places great importance on authentication, and this article looks at how a new Swedish company, Precise Biometrics, has abandoned traditional fingerprint classification methods for authentication applications, after first describing those traditional methods used for both forensic and civil tasks.

Abstract

Europe's first exhibition and conference combining machine vision and automatic identification technology was held in Sindelfingen, just south of Stuttgart, at the end of June. The event attracted some 2,500 visitors, many from the surrounding Baden‐Wurttemberg area which has a concentration of high technology industries. Don Braggins of Machine Vision Systems Consultancy reports on the synergy between the two events.
