Abstract

Considering the gradual move into the information age, digital technologies have become the new trend in different industries ranging from agriculture, manufacturing, transportation and banking, among others. The construction industry has also evolved progressively since the last decade to explore and adopt digital transformation considering the immense contribution it has towards productivity. More so, the need to combat global warming has compelled experts to begin to seek new technologies in achieving the green effect. This has led experts and researchers in the industry to seek how digital technologies can help to achieve sustainability and further functional construction. There has been a huge gap as to maximising the impact of digital transformation as many organisations in the industry are still struggling to successfully adopt and implement digital construction. This chapter will help to fill this gap and provide clear insight into how digital can help further sustainable construction.

Abstract

Global Skills for College Completion (GSCC) offers transformative use of social media – a Guided Digital Environment – a unique set of online tools and processes to capture, consolidate, and advance the effective faculty classroom work. The ambition of GSCC is to achieve a quantum increase in the historically low pass rates of basic skills students in American community colleges. The goal is to produce a rate increase so dramatic, consistently 80%, that it is “visible to the naked eye.” This increased success rate in basic skills would have the effect of accelerating remediation and increasing the probability of college completion. We believe community college basic skills faculty possess all the wisdom necessary to figure out how to improve these rates, given the right tools. In this chapter we describe the GSCC project, the Guided Digital Environment and the Tools and Routines provided to faculty to allow them to be research-practitioners in the project, and the research we drew on to build it. We include early information and observations on the essential design elements for identifying effective basic skills pedagogy. We also describe the innovative technological tools used to create an engaged community and leave a digital trail for analysis. GSCC is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation through a grant to the League for Innovation as part of its goal to double the number of young adults in the United States with a postsecondary credential by 2020.

Abstract

Globalization has indeed created opportunities as well as socio-economic and ecological challenges for tourism economies. Digital transformation and liberalization in the financial sectors have evolved to address these needs. This chapter therefore seeks to examine the effects of digital financial transformation and legal environment for sustainable tourism development in East Africa.

The chapter adopts an interdisciplinary and pragmatic worldview on digital financial transformation and legal environment for sustainable tourism development in East Africa. This will engage qualitative research by examining recent extant literature, practitioner interviews, and secondary data.

In East Africa, the digital infrastructure for the Industry 5.0 is relatively underdeveloped hindering faster growth of digital financial economies and sustainable tourism. There is a weak legal framework in the East African countries in matters like e-business, cybercrime, and data privacy laws. The countries have gaps in their intellectual property laws which stifle innovation and these inadequate laws have led to increased digital online crime and frauds.

There is a need to strengthen and integrate a multi-sectoral approach toward a regional digital and legal policy framework in order to encourage innovation and e-business. Collaborative solutions, built on shared datasets, automate the financial services, creating efficiencies and accuracy in the financial systems.

The chapter draws on the use of interdisciplinary approaches toward developing a framework for digital financial transformation and legal environment for sustainable tourism development in East Africa.

Abstract

The development puts the problem under consideration in a strategic light and gains attention with its wide comprehensiveness on the plane of unification of the activity of several modern scientific fields, which have always had intersections, but in their essence perform rather different roles – human resources management (HRM), public relations (PR), and sustainable development (SD). Examining the possibilities of applying innovative approaches in the research of these areas, in the context of the influence of digital and smart technologies and an entirely new scientific field. In this sense, the theoretical substantiation of the thesis on the synergy between HR, PR, and sustainable development is targeted in the aspect of highlighting contemporary challenges and the relevant response to achieve organizational effectiveness, based on knowledge of the impact of digitization processes and their connection with the development of human capital in the organization.

Emphasis in the present work is placed on the relationship between the management of human capital in the organization and the influence of digital and smart technologies on these processes. Focus in the research is placed in three directions – first of all – the role of digital/smart/technologies on sustainable development. Second, the impact of digital and smart technologies on green human resource management is explored, and third, emphasis is placed on the changed role of strategic communications in the context of the digital revolution.

The development brings out some good practices and ideas in the described areas.
