Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to give a comprehensive review and synthesis of automated textual analysis of corporate disclosure to show how the accuracy of disclosure tone has been incremented with the evolution of developed automated methods that have been used to calculate tone in prior studies.

Design/methodology/approach

This study have conducted the survey on “automated textual analysis of corporate disclosure and its impact” by searching at Google Scholar and Scopus research database after the year 2000 to prepare the list of papers. After classifying the prior literature into a dictionary-based and machine learning-based approach, this study have again sub-classified those papers according to two other dimensions, namely, information sources of disclosure and the impact of tone on the market.

Findings

This study found literature on how value relevance of tone is varied with the use of different automated methods and using different information sources. This study also found literature on the impact of such tone on market. These are contributing to help investor’s decision-making and earnings and returns prediction by researchers. The literature survey shows that the research gap lies in the development of methodologies toward the calculation of tone more accurately. This study also mention how different information sources and methodologies can influence the change in disclosure tone for the same firm, which, in turn, may change market performance. The research gap also lies in finding the determinants of disclosure tone with large scale data.

Originality/value

After reviewing some papers based on automated textual analysis of corporate disclosure, this study shows how the accuracy of the result is incrementing according to the evolution of automated methodology. Apart from the methodological research gaps, this study also identify some other research gaps related to determinants (corporate governance, firm-level, macroeconomic factors, etc.) and transparency or credibility of disclosure which could stimulate new research agendas in the areas of automated textual analysis of corporate disclosure.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to determine systematically the broader relationship between news media sentiment, extracted through textual analysis of articles published by leading US newspapers, and the securitized real estate market.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodology is divided into two stages. First, roughly 125,000 US newspaper article headlines from Bloomberg, The Financial Times, Forbes and The Wall Street Journal are investigated with a dictionary-based approach, and different measures of sentiment are created. Second, a vector autoregressive framework is used to analyse the relationship between media-expressed sentiment and REIT market movements over the period 2005–2015.

Findings

The empirical results provide significant evidence for a leading relationship between media sentiment and future REIT market movements. Furthermore, applying the dictionary-based approach for textual analysis, the results exhibit that a domain-specific dictionary is superior to a general dictionary. In addition, better results are achieved by a sentiment measure incorporating both positive and negative sentiment, rather than just one polarity.

Practical implications

In connection with fundamentals of the REIT market, these findings can be utilised to further improve the understanding of securitized real estate market movements and investment decisions. Furthermore, this paper highlights the importance of paying attention to new media and digitalization. The results are robust for different REIT sectors and when conventional control variables are considered.

Originality/value

This paper demonstrates for the first time, that textual analysis is able to capture media sentiment from news relevant to the US securitized real estate market. Furthermore, the broad collection of newspaper articles from four different sources is unique.

Abstract

A growing body of research outlines how to best facilitate and ensure methodological rigor when using dictionary-based computerized text analyses (DBCTA) in organizational research. However, these best practices are currently scattered across several methodological and empirical manuscripts, making it difficult for scholars new to the technique to implement DBCTA in their own research. To better equip researchers looking to leverage this technique, this methodological report consolidates current best practices for applying DBCTA into a single, practical guide. In doing so, we provide direction regarding how to make key design decisions and identify valuable resources to help researchers from the beginning of the research process through final publication. Consequently, we advance DBCTA methods research by providing a one-stop reference for novices and experts alike concerning current best practices and available resources.

Abstract

Purpose

Research analyzing online travelers’ reviews has boomed over the past years, but it lacks efficient methodologies that can provide useful end-user value within time and budget. This study aims to contribute to the field by developing and testing a new methodology for sentiment analysis that surpasses the standard dictionary-based method by creating two hotel-specific word lexicons.

Design/methodology/approach

Big data of hotel customer reviews posted on the TripAdvisor platform were collected and appropriately prepared for conducting a binary sentiment analysis by developing a novel bag-of-words weighted approach. The latter provides a transparent and replicable procedure to prepare, create and assess lexicons for sentiment analysis. This approach resulted in two lexicons (a weighted lexicon, L1 and a manually selected lexicon, L2), which were tested and validated by applying classification accuracy metrics to the TripAdvisor big data. Two popular methodologies (a public dictionary-based method and a complex machine-learning algorithm) were used for comparing the accuracy metrics of the study’s approach for creating the two lexicons.

Findings

The results of the accuracy metrics confirmed that the study’s methodology significantly outperforms the dictionary-based method in comparison to the machine-learning algorithm method. The findings also provide evidence that the study’s methodology is generalizable for predicting users’ sentiment.

Practical implications

The study developed and validated a methodology for generating reliable lexicons that can be used for big data analysis aiming to understand and predict customers’ sentiment. The L2 hotel dictionary generated by the study provides a reliable method and a useful tool for analyzing guests’ feedback and enabling managers to understand, anticipate and re-actively respond to customers’ attitudes and changes. The study also proposed a simplified methodology for understanding the sentiment of each user, which, in turn, can be used for conducting comparisons aiming to detect and understand guests’ sentiment changes across time, as well as across users based on their profiles and experiences.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the field by proposing and testing a new methodology for conducting sentiment analysis that addresses previous methodological limitations, as well as the contextual specificities of the tourism industry. Based on the paper’s literature review, this is the first research study using a bag-of-words approach for conducting a sentiment analysis and creating a field-specific lexicon.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper seeks to examine the further integration of machine translation technologies with cross language information access in providing web users the capabilities of accessing information beyond language barriers. Machine translation and cross language information access are related technologies, and yet they have their own unique contributions in handling information in multiple languages. This paper aims to demonstrate that there are many opportunities to further integrate machine translation with cross language information access, and the combination can greatly empower web users in their information access.

Design/methodology/approach

Using English and Chinese as the language pair for studying, this paper looks at machine translation in query translation‐based cross language information access at multiple important aspects, which include query translation, relevance feedback, interactive cross language information access, out‐of‐vocabulary term translation, and data fusion. The goal is to obtain more insights about the wide range usages of machine translation in cross language information access, and to help the community to identify promising future directions for both machine translation and cross language access.

Findings

Machine translation can be applied effectively in many places in the whole cross language information access process. Queries translated by a machine translation system are high quality and are more robust in handling potential untranslated terms. Translation enhancement, a relevance feedback method using machine translation generated returned documents, is not only a valid technique by itself, but also helps to generate more robust cross language information access performance when combined with other relevance feedback techniques. Machine translation is also found to play a significant role in resolving untranslated terms and in data fusion.

Originality/value

This set of comparative empirical studies on integrating machine translation and cross language information access was performed on a common evaluation framework, and examined integration at multiple points of the cross language access process. The experimental results demonstrate the value of further integrating machine translation in cross language information access, and identify interesting future directions for both machine translation and cross language information access research.

Abstract

Purpose

To investigate whether additional information of the permanent news flow, especially reporting intensity, can help to increase transparency in housing markets, this study aims to examine the relationship between news coverage or news sentiment and residential real estate prices in Germany at a regional level.

Design/methodology/approach

Using methods in the field of natural language processing, in particular word embeddings and dictionary-based sentiment analyses, the authors derive five different sentiment measures from almost 320,000 news articles of two professional German real estate news providers. These sentiment indicators are used as covariates in a first difference fixed effects regression to investigate the relationship between news coverage or news sentiment and residential real estate prices.

Findings

The empirical results suggest that the ascertained news-based indicators have a significant positive relationship with residential real estate prices. It appears that the combination of news coverage and news sentiment proves to be a reliable indicator. Furthermore, the extracted sentiment measures lead residential real estate prices up to two quarters. Finally, the explanatory power increases when regressing on prices for condominiums compared with houses, implying that the indicators may rather reflect investor sentiment.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first paper to extract both the news coverage and news sentiment from real estate-related news for regional German housing markets. The approach presented in this study to quantify additional qualitative data from texts is replicable and can be applied to many further research areas on real estate topics.

Abstract

Purpose

Estimating product cost at the design stage, often referred to as product costing, is vitally important in the product configuration process in the mass customization paradigm. There are three research streams in this field: analogous, statistical, and analytical methods. However, in a mass customization environment, these methods suffer the drawbacks of poor accuracy, low‐agility and an undesirable degree of detail. It is imperative to develop an efficient framework for product costing in mass customization. The paper aims to address these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

Activity‐based costing (ABC) becomes a new trend in product costing which alleviates the shortcomings discussed above. However, the complexity of ABC probably increases in mass customization with a high degree of variety. In this research, a framework is formalized for product costing in mass customization, in which a generic activity definition is proposed to simplify and catalyze ABC practice in high‐variety production. Moreover, an activity dictionary with a hierarchical structure is developed to bring commonality and modularity to the storage and retrieval of activity data.

Findings

A generic activity‐dictionary‐based method for product costing in mass customization is developed.

Research limitations/implications

The method proposed for product costing provides valuable cost data for product specifications, as well as the activities to create them. Therefore, a product configuration solution can be financially evaluated and optimized.

Practical implications

Based on the methodology proposed, a prototype system has been developed and implemented in a computer‐assembling company.

Originality/value

This paper alleviates the negative impact of activity variety on product costing.

Abstract

Purpose

This study attempts to evaluate the effect of the corpus-based inductive teaching approach with multiple academic corpora (PICA, CAEC and Oxford Corpus of Academic English) and conventional deductive teaching approach (i.e., multiple-choice items, filling the gap, matching and underlining) on learning academic collocations by Iranian advanced EFL learners (students learning English as a foreign language).

Design/methodology/approach

This is a quasi-experimental, quantitative and qualitative study.

Findings

The result showed the experimental group outperformed significantly compared with the control group. The experimental group also shared their perception of the advantages and disadvantages of the corpus-assisted language teaching approach.

Originality/value

Despite growing progress in language pedagogy, methodologies and language curriculum design, there are still many teachers who experience poor performance in their students' vocabulary, whether in comprehension or production. In Iran, for example, even though mandatory English education begins at the age of 13, which is junior and senior high school, students still have serious problems in language production and comprehension when they reach university levels.

Abstract

Sentiment analysis is a text analysis method that is developed for systematically detecting, identifying, or extracting the emotional intent of words to infer if the text expresses a positive or negative tone. Although this novel method has opened an exciting new avenue for organizational research – mainly due to the abundantly available text data in organizations and the well-developed sentiment analysis techniques, it has also posed a serious challenge to many organizational researchers. This chapter aims to introduce the sentiment analysis method in the text mining area to the organizational research community. In this chapter, the authors first briefly discuss the central role of sentiment in organizational research and then introduce the traditional and modern approaches to sentiment analysis. The authors further delineate research paradigms for text analysis research, advocating the iterative research paradigm (cf., inductive and deductive research paradigms) that is more suitable for text mining research, and also introduce the analytical procedures for sentiment analysis with three stages – discovery, measurement, and inference. More importantly, the authors highlight both the dictionary-based and machine learning (ML) approaches in the measurement stage, with special coverage on deep learning and word embedding techniques as the latest breakthroughs in sentiment and text analyses. Lastly, the authors provide two illustrative examples to demonstrate the applications of sentiment analysis in organizational research. It is the authors’ hope that this chapter – by providing these practical guidelines – will help facilitate more applications of this novel method in organizational research in the future.

Abstract

Purpose

Wine tourism is gaining increasing popularity among Chinese tourists, making it necessary to thoroughly examine tourist behavior. While online reviews posted by wine tourists have been extensively studied from the perspectives of destinations and wineries, the perspective of the tourists themselves has been overlooked. To address this gap, this study aims to identify significant attributes intrinsic to the tourism experiences of Chinese wine tourists by adopting a text-mining approach from a tourist-centric perspective.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors use topic modeling to extract these attributes, calculate topic intensity to understand tourists’ attention distribution across these attributes and conduct topical sentiment analysis to evaluate tourists’ satisfaction levels with each attribute. The authors perform importance-performance analyses (IPAs) using topic intensity and sentiment scores. Furthermore, the authors conduct semistructured in-depth interviews with Chinese wine tourists to gain insights into the underlying reasons behind the key findings.

Findings

The study identifies eleven attributes for domestic wine tourists and seven attributes for outbound wine tourists. From the reviews of both domestic and outbound tourists, three common attributes have been identified: “scenic view”, “wine tasting and purchase” and “wine knowledge”.

Practical implications

According to the results of the IPAs, there is a pressing need for enhancements in the wine tasting and purchasing experience at domestic wine attractions. Additionally, managers of domestic wine attractions should continue to prioritize the positive aspects of the family trip experience and scenic views. On the other hand, for outbound wine attractions, it is crucial for managers to maintain their efforts in providing opportunities for wine knowledge acquisition, ensuring scenic views and upholding the reputation of wine regions.

Originality/value

First, this study breaks new ground by adopting a tourist-centric perspective to extract significant attributes from real wine tourism reviews. Second, the authors conduct a comparative analysis between Chinese wine tourists who travel domestically and those who travel abroad. The third novel aspect of this study is the application of IPA based on textual review data in the context of wine tourism. Fourth, by integrating topic modeling with qualitative interviews, the authors use a mixed-method approach to gain deeper insights into the experiences of Chinese wine tourists.
