Abstract

The term “destructive leadership” has been utilized as an overarching expression to refer to various “bad” leader behaviors thought to be associated with damaging outcomes for followers and organizations. Yet, there is a recognition in the broader leadership literature that leadership involves much more than the behaviors of leaders. It is a dynamic, cocreational process that unfolds between leaders, followers, and environments, the product of which results in group outcomes. In this chapter, I argue that in order to achieve a more balanced view on destructive leadership, it is vital to develop more integrative approaches that are grounded in the contemporary leadership discourse and that recognize flawed or toxic leaders, susceptible followers, and conducive environments as interdependent elements of a broader destructive leadership process. To this end, I provide a critique of the extant literature, propose a broader definition of destructive leadership, and discuss strategies to examine destructive leadership in a broader, holistic manner.

Abstract

This paper is concerned with the difficult question of what our field can contribute to preventing and resolving the sorts of destructive conflicts which are so prevalent in our world today at the interpersonal, inter‐group, interethnic, and international levels. In this paper, I outline an approach to this question. The paper is divided into three parts. The first is a brief discussion of some of the factors which determine whether a conflict will take a constructive or destructive course. The second deals with the prevention of destructive conflicts—here I consider the potential roles of government, education, the media, religion, and industry. The third is concerned with how to manage intractable, destructive conflicts.

Abstract

Purpose

To improve the efficiency and economy of electro-mechanical product's recycle process, this paper aims to propose a disassembly sequence planning (DSP) method to reduce additional efforts of removing extra parts in selectable disassembly.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodology has three parts, which includes a disassembly hybrid graphic model to describe the product disassembly information, an object inverse-directed method to optimize the disassembly design and a model reconstruction method to achieve a better DSP.

Findings

According to the disassembly cost criteria and the parameters of disassembly tools, the disassembly efficiency increases and the disassembly cost decreases due to the use of partial destructive mode compared with non-destructive mode. The proposed partial destructive DSP is more efficient and economical.

Research limitations/implications

Partial destructive disassembly mode cannot be used for the flammable or explosive component in the procedure of the DSP optimization algorithm.

Practical implications

DSP of an electric corkscrew is analyzed to investigate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method.

Originality/value

This paper proposes a partial destructive disassembly based DSP method for product disassembly, which provides a new approach for the disposal of end-of-life products.

Abstract

A novel approach is used to reverse engineer polymeric parts in a low cost, non‐destructive manner. Solids created from polymers with an index of refraction matching that of an immersion liquid are reverse engineered using a CCD camera. Serial images are taken as the part is immersed into the liquid or taken out of the liquid. The images are then used to create digital solid models from the polymeric physical model. The concept of the process, the hardware as a proof‐of‐concept demonstration, and results to understand the accuracy and limitations of the process are described.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose the organizational knowledge effects of organization routine breach response.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper reviews the routines and knowledge management literatures and applies them to the concept of organizational routine breach.

Findings

It is found that three types of organizational routine breach response affect the explicit and tacit knowledge contained within routines differently. These differences can influence organizational performance in positive and negative ways.

Research limitations/implications

Future research can be based on an enhanced understanding of the knowledge effects stemming from breaches in organizational routines.

Practical implications

Managers can use an enhanced understanding of the knowledge effects of organizational routine breach to increase their ability to manage organizational routines and the knowledge contained in them.

Originality/value

This paper links the organizational routines literature with the knowledge management literature to identify the effects of various responses to organization routine breach on organizational knowledge. This integration enables researchers and managers to better understand the implications of routine breach on organizational knowledge and performance.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to review the complexity of post‐Communist transition with regard to the processes of creating a legal and institutional environment, which will predispose social actors to cooperate to solve social problems and neutralize disparities. The paper also seeks to consider the shift from social destruction (everyone fighting with one an other) to social collaboration.

Design/methodology/approach

The focus of the paper is on the scope of the simultaneously functioning political, social and moral extremes. They are seen as the key attributes of chaotic social transition and as material for creating cooperative links.

Findings

Political and social transformation running simultaneously, and followed by legal and administrative modernization, provoked formerly unknown social conflicts in the transitional society. The case of Lithuania shows that the old methods for dealing with new conflicts were not suitable. Society became fragmented. Social costs of disintegration were high but not equal, when compared internationally. Interdependence between functionality, innovative and cultural potential of the state, and its capability to regulate conflicts and social controversies had been brought into political debates and public discussions after transition had been in progress for several years. This was a signal that political parties and the most influential social players became concerned about social outcomes of the reforms. Developing a new legal and institutional environment, empowering cooperation and conflict management in social interactions, is perceived as an indicator of the progress of the continuing transition.

Research limitations/implications

Because of its nature and size, the research does not develop insights into the processes which were in some sense dependent on, and simultaneously became incentives for, the culture of cooperation in society; for example, dynamics of cooperation and competition among authorities and citizens, business and politics.

Originality/value

Though great interest is shown in transitional processes in social and humanitarian studies, the rise of conflicts in society as well as the limitations of constructive ways of dealing with such conflicts are not yet the focus of social investigation.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to ascertain the impact of perceived knowledge sharing systems on destructive and constructive deviance through employee engagement. Also, this study explores the moderating role of perceived organizational support (POS).

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from 403 entry-level IT employees. Structural equation modeling and PROCESS macro by Preacher and Hayes were used to examine the proposed hypotheses.

Findings

Results specified a significant impact of perceived knowledge sharing systems on employee engagement, which in turn, exhibited a negative relationship with a destructive and positive relationship with constructive deviance, respectively. Results revealed that employee engagement significantly mediated the relationship between perceived knowledge sharing systems and destructive and constructive deviance. Concerning moderating role of POS, it was found that at a high level of POS, the effect of knowledge sharing systems on employee engagement was significant in a positive direction and reached its highest level. Finally, for moderated mediation, results only supported the indirect effects of knowledge sharing systems on destructive deviance through employee engagement at different levels of POS.

Research limitations/implications

This study infers that IT organizations must implement measures to enhance employee engagement and POS by investing in embedded knowledge sharing systems. This will not only cater to the customized needs of employees but will also reduce destructive deviance and stimulate constructive deviance.

Originality/value

Given a few studies integrating workplace deviance, this is the first study that proposes an integrated process model to overcome destructive and stimulate constructive deviance among IT employees by assessing the role of knowledge sharing systems as an antecedent, employee engagement as a mediator and POS as a moderating variable.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of psychological contract breach on destructive by developing a moderated mediation model. The model focuses on the mediating role of moral identity and moral disengagement and the moderating role of moral belief.

Design/methodology/approach

This study conducted a three-wave questionnaire survey and used 377 matched-sample data to test the hypotheses. PROCESS bootstrapping program in SPSS and confirmatory factor analysis in AMOS software were adopted in this study.

Findings

Results reveal that psychological contract breach has a positive effect on destructive leadership behavior, and the relationship is mediated by moral identity and moral disengagement; moral belief not only moderates the relationship between psychological contract breach and destructive leadership behavior, but also moderates the mediation effect of moral identity and moral disengagement.

Originality/value

First, this study enriches the destructive leadership behavior literature by verifying psychological contract breach as an antecedent. Second, this study discusses the role of morality in the formation mechanism of destructive leadership behavior by testing the mediating effect of moral identity and moral disengagement and the moderating effect of moral belief.

Abstract

Purpose

The cumulative pool of data piling through the empirical expedition around hospitals in Vietnam provides the clue on whether corporate social responsibility (CSR) influences upward influence behavior, which in turn catalyzes team processes and competitive intelligence scanning. The aim of this paper is to journey through the review of the constructs of CSR, upward influence behavior, and team processes.

Design/methodology/approach

Structural equation modeling (SEM) approach served as an analyst for 349 responses returned from self‐administered structured questionnaires despatched to 522 hospital members in the middle‐management position.

Findings

A model of team processes and competitive intelligence evolved along the process of hypothesis testing. Ethical CSR was found to cultivate organizationally beneficial upward influence behavior in the healthcare service organizations.

Originality/value

The research findings provide the insight into the CSR‐based model of team processes which underscores the role of ethical CSR initiatives and organizationally beneficial upward influence tactics in the activation of competitive intelligence scanning deeds in hospitals in Vietnam business setting.

Abstract

Purpose

In recent years, additive manufacturing (AM) technology has been acknowledged as an efficient method for producing geometrical complex objects with a wide range of applications. However, dimensional inaccuracies and presence of defects hinder the broad adaption of AM procedures. These factors arouse concerns regarding the quality of the products produced with AM and the utilization of quality control (QC) techniques constitutes a must to further support this emerging technology. This paper aims to assist researchers to obtain a clear sight of what are the trends and what has been inspected so far concerning non-destructive testing (NDT) QC methods in AM.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, a survey on research advances on non-destructive QC procedures used in AM technology has been conducted. The paper is organized as follows: Section 2 discusses the existing NDT methods applied for the examination of the feedstock material, i.e. incoming quality control (IQC). Section 3 outlines the inspection methods for in situ QC, while Section 4 presents the methods of NDT applied after the manufacturing process i.e. outgoing QC methods. In Section 5, statistical QC methods used in AM technologies are documented. Future trends and challenges are included in Section 6 and conclusions are drawn in Section 7.

Findings

The primary scope of the study is to present the available and reliable NDT methods applied in every AM technology and all stages of the process. Most of the developed techniques so far are concentrated mainly in the inspection of the manufactured part during and post the AM process, compared to prior to the procedure. Moreover, material extrusion, direct energy deposition and powder bed processes are the focal points of the research in NDT methods applied in AM.

Originality/value

This literature review paper is the first to collect the latest and the most compatible techniques to evaluate the quality of parts produced by the main AM processes prior, during and after the manufacturing procedure.
