Abstract

An emergency shelter design as an immediate response to assist people in disaster situations was evaluated in this study. The design experiment concerns the use of recyclable paper tubes and simple construction techniques so that unskilled labor can quickly and readily assemble the shelter where required. The design exercise is a result of a joint effort of a group of architecture students at Inha University with the help of an architect, Shigeru Ban, who is renowned for his innovative work with paper tubes. In the first phase, five different design alternatives for a short term recovery option are proposed and in the second phase, a design was selected and developed on the full scale to demonstrate its design and assembly technique.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to establish an assembly accuracy analysis model of deployable arms based on Jacobian–Torsor theory to improve the assembly accuracy. Spacecraft deployable arm is one of the core components of spacecraft. Reducing the errors in assembly process is the main method to improve the assembly accuracy of spacecraft deployable arms.

Design/methodology/approach

First, the influence of composite connecting rod, root joint and arm joint on assembly accuracy in the tandem assembly process is analyzed to propose the assembly accuracy analysis model. Second, a non-tandem assembly process of “two joints fixed-composite rod installed-flange gasket compensated” is proposed and analyzed to improve the assembly accuracy of deployable arms. Finally, the feasibility of non-tandem assembly process strategy is verified by assembly experiment.

Findings

The experiential results show that the assembly errors are reduced compared with the tandem assembly process. The errors on axes x, y and z directions decreased from 14.1009 mm, 14.2424 mm and 0.8414 mm to 0.922 mm, 0.671 mm and 0.2393 mm, respectively. The errors round axes x and y directions also decreased from 0.0050° and 0.0053° to 0.00292° and 0.00251°, respectively.

Originality/value

This paper presents an assembly accuracy analysis model of deployable arms and applies the model to calculate assembly errors in tandem assembly process. In addition, a non-tandem assembly process is proposed based on the model. The experimental results show that the non-tandem assembly process can improve the assembly accuracy of deployable arms.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to synthesize a modular deployable truss antenna with the lower degree of freedom (DOF) and larger folding ratio. Because of the advantages of this kind of new truss antenna, the modules that make up the antenna can be deployed together by the synchronous motor drivers instead of twist springs to realize the controllable deployment.

Design/methodology/approach

The closed-loop branch equivalence method is proposed to synthesize the single DOF module and the large deployable reflector. The complex mechanism can be equivalently replaced by a simpler mechanism based on screw theory. The motion pairs are synthesized and optimized to make the curved surface achieve to the maximum folding ratio when the modular parabolic truss antenna is folded.

Findings

The results show that the 3(3RR-3RRR)-3RRR-3RRR planar module is a single DOF mechanism. Additionally, the adjacent parts of every two modules are connected with universal joints to obtain the new truss antenna when the modules are networked.

Practical implications

The configuration of this new modular deployable truss antenna can be synthesized to design the structure, and the proposed method can be applied to other space multi-loop coupling mechanism and other spacecraft.

Originality/value

This paper presents an approach to synthesizing the motion pairs, as well as the DOF analysis. The results lay a foundation for the further analysis of the deployable control and dynamics of this kind of antenna. And the new modular truss antenna has a practical application in aerospace engineering.

Abstract

Purpose

In order to make the aperture of spatial deployable antenna larger, this paper proposed the study on a spatial annular tensegrity structure with 100 m large scale, which could be one of the ideal solutions to improve the dimension of the antenna. This study is aiming to figure out the dynamic characteristic of ultra-large annular tensegrity and address the problem of insufficient rigidity with local modes that many ring truss-type deployable antenna structures have faced.

Design/methodology/approach

This work is carried out based on the nonlinear dynamic modelling when fully considering the effect of bending and torsion deformation of beams, as well as the pretension of cables. Additionally, the structural stability analysis based on the proposed stability criterion is also presented to evaluate the tensegrity configuration with different distribution of cable groups.

Findings

This research results verify that the modified structure with radial ribs could eliminate the effect of the local vibration mode on stiffness and is suitable to meet the requirements of the annular tensegrity structure. Additionally, the calculation results demonstrate that the structural configuration of annular tensegrity with 36 groups of cables which share the nodes with radial ribs is more appropriate to enhance the stiffness and structural stability.

Originality/value

A new large annular tensegrity structure with radial ribs and tensioned cables is proposed. Based on the proposed structural configuration, the positive definiteness of the tangent stiffness matrix is carried out as the criterion of stability and the composition of the analytical expression of the tangent stiffness matrix is analyzed. Four levels of tensegrity structure stability have been carried out and the influence of the structural parameters on the stability and the rigidity has been analyzed. A scaled-down prototype is developed to verify the feasibility of the design of the hoop-column-rib configuration by the deployment and dynamic experiment.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to build a new deployable antenna with folded scissors ribs and to evaluate the reasonable characteristics of this new structure.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the TerrStar-1 satellite, virtual design and shapes forming are considered in this paper with the structure design of the new antenna. Considering the relaxation units in net surface, form-finding evaluation is used to build mathematical model and operate the optimization algorithm so that the design of the new antenna with folded scissors ribs is achieved. Simulations are carried out to verify the antenna proposed.

Findings

It is found that the antenna with folded scissors ribs can be developed smoothly in the space.

Practical implications

The proposed the antenna with folded scissors ribs can be considered as a fall-back alternative for large antenna, with a diameter of over 10 m in the space, or is seen as another option for the system with a simple rigid structure.

Originality/value

Different from traditional antenna, it provides a valuable reference for the further research of large deployable antenna in space. The antenna in this paper is able to develop more than 30 m of diameter. Meanwhile, the surface density and the natural frequency and the root-mean-square error in surface are superior to those of the traditional antenna.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to establish the dynamics model of a Z-folded PhoneSat considering hinge friction and to investigate the influence of disturbances, such as friction, stiffness asymmetry, deployment asynchronicity and initial disturbance angular velocity, on the attitude of PhoneSat during and after deployment.

Design/methodology/approach

For the Z-folded PhoneSat, the dynamics model considering hinge friction is established and the dynamics simulation is carried out. The effects of friction, stiffness asymmetry, deployment asynchronicity and initial disturbance angular velocity on the attitude motion of the PhoneSat are studied and the attitude motion regularities of the PhoneSat considering the disturbance factors mentioned above are discussed.

Findings

Friction has a main contribution to reducing the oscillation of attitude motion and damping out the residual oscillation, ultimately decreasing the deployment time. An increasing length of deployment time is required with the increasing stiffness asymmetry and time difference of asynchronous deployment, which also have slight disturbances on the attitude angle and angular velocity of PhoneSat after the deployment. The initial disturbance angular velocity in the direction of deployment would be proportionally weakened after the deployment, whereas initial disturbance angular velocity in other direction induces angular velocities of other axes, which dramatically enhances the complexity of attitude control.

Originality/value

The paper is a useful reference for engineering design of small satellites attitude control system.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to make the mobile robot better adapt to the patrol and monitoring in industrial field substation area, a multi-mode mobile carrying mechanism which can carrying data collector, camera and other equipment is designed.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the geometric axis analysis and interference analysis, the multi-mode mobile carrying mechanism is designed. The screw constraint topological theory and zero-moment point (ZMP) theory is used to kinematic analysis in mechanism mobile process.

Findings

The mobile carrying mechanism can realize the folding movement, hexagonal rolling and quadrilateral rolling movement. A series of simulation and prototype experiment results verify the feasibility and actual error of the design analysis.

Originality/value

The work of this paper provides a mobile carrying mechanism for carrying different data acquisition equipment and surveillance camera in industrial field substation zone. It has excellent folding performance and mobile capabilities. The mobile carrying mechanism reduces the workload of human being and injuries suffered by workers in industrial substation area.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper presents a new method for deploying RoboCrane‐type cable robots, without the need for fixed rigid cable support points. That is, the system provides its own deployable mobile overhead support points.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper presents a new RoboCrane support concept based on rigid members, cable actuation, and cable suspension. It is self‐contained and provides mobility for the required six overhead cable connections, thus extending the workspace of the existing RoboCrane. The paper presents the RoboCrane support concept overview, followed by kinematics and statics analysis, plus a case study of a specific design.

Findings

Design for kinematic horizontality, workspace, and statics are competing so the designer must make tradeoffs for the best system performance according to specific design needs.

Research limitations/implications

Since the support system plus RoboCrane are both cable‐suspended robots, there are limitations in the pseudostatic workspace, i.e. since the cables can only exert tension and cannot push, the motion range is limited.

Practical implications

Specific system design and deployment is still remaining work – practical issues such as outriggers for moment and tipping resistance, easy portability, control of the mast from the ground, and safety must be solved in the future.

Originality/value

Enables RoboCrane applications in many more arenas, such as automated construction, where rigid overhead cable support points are simply unavailable.

Abstract

Purpose

Amongst all classes of unmanned aircraft system (UAS), the rise of the Mini UAS class is the most dominant. Mini UASs are field-deployable systems and hence are not expected to operate from a runway. Therefore, the operating terrain plays an important role in the deployment and employment of the Mini UAS. However, there is limited published work in this area. The impact of terrain is more critical for military applications than civilian applications. The purpose of this paper is to explore the implications of various types of terrain on the employment and deployment of Mini UAS.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper explores the implications of various types of terrain on the employment and deployment of Mini UAS.

Findings

Mini UAS with field deployable requirements is often launched within the tactical battle area in case of military applications or in close proximity to the intended target area for civilian applications. Due to the size and weight of the Mini UAS, launch and recovery becomes an important factor to be considered. Rotary wing or fixed-wing vertical take-off and landing configuration UAS overcomes the limitations of Mini UAS and hence it is the preferred option. Impact of the terrain is significantly higher for military applications as compared to civil applications. Mountain terrain is the most challenging for Mini UAS operations.

Practical implications

This paper will help the designers configure the UAS as per the operating terrain.

Originality/value

Terrain affects the deployment and employment of Mini UAS and the capabilities of the system with respect to terrain in which it is expected to operate must be considered during the design of a Mini UAS. The paper will help the designers configure the UAS as per the operating terrain.

Abstract

This paper presents a pop-up technique based on origamic architecture as a technological design solution for post-disaster temporary shelter systems. First of all, the concepts of disaster and post-disaster are briefly introduced, and the roles and needs of post-disaster temporary shelter systems, particularly in emergency periods, are reviewed. Second, pop-up techniques based on origamic architecture are briefly discussed. Third, a formal language for opening the cards of origamic architecture is introduced, out of which a geometric elasticity has been developed. With the language, a variety of flexible and expandable designs for shelter structures can be generated by incorporating different pop-up techniques. Finally, a prototype shelter has been constructed to demonstrate the adaptability and sustainability of the shelter within the local environment and the affected society, considering portability, low-cost, and easy in assembling by any unskilled person.
