Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the variation of the specific iron loss components of electrical steel sheets when applying a tensile mechanical load below the yield strength of the material. The results provide an insight into the iron loss behaviour of the laminated core of electrical machines which are exposed to mechanical stresses of diverse origins.

Design/methodology/approach

The specific iron losses of electrical steel sheets are measured using a standardised single-sheet tester equipped with a hydraulic pressure cylinder which enables application of a force to the specimen under test. Based on the measured data and a semi-physical description of specific iron losses, the stress-dependency of the iron loss components can be studied.

Findings

The results show a dependency of iron loss components on the applied mechanical stress. Especially for the non-linear loss component and high frequencies, a large variation is observed, while the excess loss component is not as sensitive to high mechanical stresses. Besides, it is shown that the stress-dependent iron loss prediction approximates the measured specific iron losses in an adequate way.

Originality/value

New applications such as high-speed traction drives in electric vehicles require a suitable design of the electrical machine. These applications require particular attention to the interaction between mechanical influences and magnetic behaviour of the machine. In this regard, knowledge about the relation between mechanical stress and magnetic properties of soft magnetic material is essential for an exact estimation of the machine’s behaviour.

Abstract

This study builds up the case for dependency considerations in system analyses by explaining “dependency” as a concept, and proposes a methodology to predict the dependency for the components and the systems. Many a times, dependency concept is neglected in system studies in order to simplify the analysis that leads to the “satisficing” results. For systems where such negligence may cause significant deviations, the dependency has to be accounted for. The proposed methodology applies the concepts of analytic hierarchy process (AHP), directed graph, and matrices at different stages of analyses and results into an intra‐dependency index for the system. This index could help the analyst select the less dependent system from amongst the choices available without compromising on the minimum expectations of the system. The index would also help understand the level of the dependencies in the system. In this paper, the methodology is developed and described using examples, to explain the application of functional dependency and design dependency. This suggests the wide coverage and application of the proposed methodology.

Abstract

Purpose

One of the common approaches to improve systems reliability is using standby redundancy. Although many works are available in the literature on the applications of standby redundancy, the system components are assumed to be independent of each other. But, in reality, the system components can be dependent on one another, causing the failure of each component to affect the failure rate of the remaining active components. In this paper, a standby two-unit system is considered, assuming a dependency between the switch and its associated active component.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper assumes that the failures between the switch and its associated active component follow the Marshall–Olkin exponential bivariate exponential distribution. Then, the reliability analysis of the system is done using the continuous-time Markov chain method.

Findings

The derived equations application to determine the system steady-state availability, system reliability and sensitivity analysis on the mean time to failure is demonstrated using a numerical illustration.

Originality/value

All previous models assumed independency between the switch and the associated active unit in the standby redundancy approach. In this paper, the switch and its associated component are assumed to be dependent on each other.

Abstract

Being extensively used in metallurgy, rotating magnetic fields are also becoming increasingly interesting for application in crystal growth, where they are intended to act by stabilizing the melt flow. For this purpose, it is important to understand the basic interactions of the magnetically induced flow and other flow components like time‐dependent buoyant convection. So a three‐dimensional finite volume method was developed in order to numerically study the effect of a rotating magnetic field on convection in a cylindrical melt volume. The equations of mass, momentum, and heat transport are solved together with the potential equations describing the electromagnetic field. The numerical computation of the Lorenz force distribution is validated by comparison with an analytical solution. The effects of magnetic field parameters on the temperature distributions and the flow patterns in the considered configurations are analysed.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate whether and how organizational culture moderates the influence of other organizational capacities on the uptake of new mental health care roles by non‐medical primary health and social care services.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a cross‐sectional survey design, data were collected in 2004 from providers in 41 services in Victoria, Australia, recruited using purposeful sampling. Respondents within each service worked as a group to complete a structured interview that collected quantitative and qualitative data simultaneously. Five domains of organizational capacity were analyzed: leadership, moral support and participation; organizational culture; shared concepts, policies, processes and structures; access to resource support; and social model of health. A principal components analysis explored the structure of data about roles and capacities, and multiple regression analysis examined relationships between them. The unit of analysis was the service (n=41).

Findings

Organizational culture was directly associated with involvement in two types of mental health care roles and moderated the influence of factors in the inter‐organizational environment on role involvement.

Research limitations/implications

Congruence between the values embodied in organizational culture, communicated in messages from the environment, and underlying particular mental health care activities may play a critical role in shaping the emergence of intersectoral working and the uptake of new roles.

Originality/value

This study is the first to demonstrate the importance of organizational culture to intersectoral collaboration in health care, and one of very few to examine organizational culture as a predictor of performance, compared with other organizational‐level factors, in a multivariate analysis. Theory is developed to explain the findings.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose new importance measures for degrading components based on Shapley value, which can provide answers about how important players are to the whole cooperative game and what payoff each player can reasonably expect.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed importance measure characterizes how a specific degrading component contributes to the degradation of system reliability by using Shapley value. Degradation models are also introduced to assess the reliability of degrading components. The reliability of system consisting independent degrading components is obtained by using structure functions, while reliability of system comprising correlated degrading components is evaluated with a multivariate distribution.

Findings

The ranking of degrading components according to the newly developed importance measure depends on the degradation parameters of components, system structure and parameters characterizing the association of components.

Originality/value

Considering the fact that reliability degradation of engineering systems and equipment are often attributed to the degradation of a particular or set of components that are characterized by degrading features. This paper proposes new importance measures for degrading components based on Shapley value to reflect the responsibility of each degrading component for the deterioration of system reliability. The results are also able to give timely feedback of the expected contribution of each degrading component to system reliability degradation.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate age replacement policies for two-component parallel system with stochastic dependence. The stochastic dependence considered, is modeled by a one-sided domino effect. The failure of component 1 at instant t may induce the failure of component 2 at instant t+τ with probability p 1→2. The time delay τ is a random variable with known probability density function h p 1→2 (.). The system is considered in a failed state when both components are failed. The proposed replacement policies suggest to replace the system upon failure or at age T whichever occurs first.

Design/methodology/approach

In the first policy, costs and durations associated with maintenance activities are supposed to be constant. In the second replacement policy, the preventive replacement cost depends on the system’s state and age. The expected cost per unit of time over an infinite span is derived and numerical examples are presented.

Findings

In this paper and especially in the second policy, the authors find that the authors can get a more economical policy if the authors consider that the preventive replacement cost is not constant but depends on T.

Originality/value

In this paper, the authors take into account of the stochastic dependence between system components. This dependence affects the global reliability of the system and replacement’s periodicity. It can be used to measure the performance of the system et introduced into design phase of the system.

Abstract

Purpose

The traditional maintenance scheduling strategies of multi-component systems may result in maintenance shortage or overage, while system degradation information is often ignored. The purpose of this paper is to propose a multi-phase model that better integrates degradation information, dependencies and maintenance at the tactical level.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper proposes first a maintenance optimization model for multi-component systems with economic dependence and structural dependence. The cost of combining maintenance activities is lower than that of performing maintenance on components separately, and the downtime cost can be reduced by considering structural dependence. Degradation information and multiple maintenance actions within scheduling horizon are considered. Moreover, the maintenance resources can be integrated into the optimization model. Then, the optimization model adopting one maintenance activity is extended to multi-phase optimization model of the whole system lifetime by taking into account the cost and the expected number of downtime.

Findings

The superiority of the proposed method compared with periodic maintenance is demonstrated. Thus, the values of both integrated degradation information and considering dependencies are testified. The advantage of the proposed method is highlighted in the cases of high system utilization, long maintenance durations and low maintenance costs.

Originality/value

Few studies have been carried out to integrate decisions on degradation, dependencies and maintenance. Their considerations are either incomplete or not realistic enough. A more comprehensive and realistic multi-phase model is proposed in this paper, along with an iterative solution algorithm for it.

Abstract

Purpose

Drawing on theories of development economics and sustainable tourism, this research explores the differences between sovereign and nonsovereign small island tourism economies (SITEs) and identifies the antecedents and effects of overtourism in the Caribbean.

Design/methodology/approach

The research design is based on a comparative case study of selected Caribbean SITEs. Case study research involves a detailed empirical inquiry that investigates a contemporary phenomenon within its real-life context. The main purpose of a case study is to provide a contextual analysis of the conditions and processes involved in the phenomenon under study. A comparative case study is an appropriate research methodology to explore new multi-faceted concepts with limited empirical evidence.

Findings

The results confirm previous studies that nonsovereign SITEs have a distinctive overdrive toward tourism specialization. Moreover, the findings indicate that overtourism is driven by both global and domestic policy factors and generates significant economic volatility, social inequality and ecological stress. The paper discusses the tourism policy implications of the evolving economic disconnectedness, environmental decay and social tensions in SITEs in the Caribbean.

Originality/value

Policy recommendations are presented for transitioning toward a more inclusive development and strengthening the resilience of small island tourism development in the Caribbean.
