Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present a modified MEC algorithm for demagnetization modeling of the PM motor. One of the major issues that the designers of the permanent magnet (PM) motors are faced with is the demagnetization of magnets because of high temperatures and armature reaction. Demagnetization will weaken the magnetic properties of the magnet and lead to a reduction in the performance of the motor. Therefore, it is essential to provide appropriate methods for modeling this phenomenon. One of these methods that has a compromise between accuracy and time consumption is the magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC). In this paper, the MEC method is used for modeling the demagnetization phenomenon for the newly introduced ring winding axial flux PM (RWAFPM) motor. The proposed algorithm can take the demagnetization into account through a time-stepping model and also correct the value of the knee point flux density.

Design/methodology/approach

The modified MEC method is used for demagnetization modeling. The modified algorithm can take into account demagnetization and also renew the knee point at each step to increase the accuracy of the modeling. In addition, the proposed algorithm has a very high and fast execution speed so that the computation time of the MEC algorithm compared to the FEM model is reduced from 3 h to 35 s. In this case, the simulations have been performed on a core i5@ 2.3 GHz/8GB computer. The FEM model is used to verify the validity of the MEC results.

Findings

The obtained results show that at the high temperature, RWAFPM motor is severely vulnerable to demagnetization. At the temperature of 140°C, the demagnetization rate of 35% has occurred. So, it is necessary to use the high-temperature magnet in this motor or modify the motor structure in terms of demagnetization tolerant capability.

Originality/value

The RWAFPM motor is introduced for use in ship propulsion and traction systems. For this reason, an accurate estimation of demagnetization tolerant of this motor in different working conditions can show the strengths and weaknesses of this structure.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a novel simple and efficient structure for line-start axial-flux permanent magnet (LSAFPM) synchronous motor, especially regarding the permanent magnets (PMs) demagnetization reduction.

Design/methodology/approach

At first, a primitive raw scheme of the new structure for the LSAFPM motor is introduced. Considering this raw scheme, the levels of irreversible demagnetization in various regions throughout the entire volume of each PM are evaluated using 3 dimensional (3D) finite elements analysis (3D FEA) in full loading condition during startup until reaching steady state. Based on the results of these analyses, the primitive structural scheme is then modified through segmenting (cutting into four pieces) each PM from where the worst irreversible demagnetization levels occurred.

Findings

As will be demonstrated by the results of 3D FEA, the proposed modified structure is not only capable of successful startup and synchronization of the motor but also it considerably reduces the PM demagnetization level. Thus, the performance of the motor is significantly improved.

Originality/value

The demagnetization of PMs is an important effect in PM synchronous motors, which can greatly affect motor performance. Therefore, it is necessary to be considered in the motor design processes. This effect becomes much more significant in the line-start PM motors because the usual high-magnitude startup induction current produces a strong armature-reaction magnetic field, which may cause the PMs to be irreversibly demagnetized. The approach proposed in this paper provides a structural solution to mitigate the PM demagnetization effect and thereby improve the performance of an LSAFPM motor through modifying the structure of the LSAFPM motor according to an FEA-based PM demagnetization analysis. As a considerable contribution, in this analysis, the variation of demagnetization level between different areas inside each PM is computed and is considered as a basis for proposing an appropriate structural modification to mitigate the PM demagnetization effect as much as possible.

Abstract

Purpose

In order to reduce CO2 emissions of new cars many hydraulic and mechanical systems like e.g.: water pump, oil pump, power steering, clime compressor have been exchanged with pure electromechanical systems, which are driven only on request. This helps to reduce fuel consumption. This trend requires of utilization of modern brushless electric motors, which are controlled from power electronic control unit – ECU. In today's car can be found between 30 to 150 electric motors. Many of them are still simple brush type with ferrite magnets. Also in this area, drift in the direction of brushless motors can bee seen, because of higher efficiency, longer lifetime, lower noise, better EMC and more controllable torque vs speed characteristic. There are different technological solutions, which can been used in the area of brushless motors in order to reduce size and cost of single component. One major factor of BLDC/AC motor is rear earth permanent magnet material used during production. A magnet material cost could be in the range from 30 percent (basis price 2010) up to 90 percent (basis price 2011) of total material motor cost, depends on actual rear earth material price level. In order to reduce magnet cost, the aim of this paper is to find the most robust motor design, which can be resistant against maximum temperature and phase current amplitude for the same magnet material properties, coercive force – Hcj. This behaviour is called demagnetization property.

Design/methodology/approach

Analysis was performed based on review of literature, own theoretical and practical research and experience in the area of electromechanical systems for automotive application. During motor analysis computer numerical simulation method, CAD and experiment were used.

Findings

As a result, comparison of different motors' topologies with different properties of magnet materials is presented. The worked out methodology shows very good correlation between simulations and measurements. This work can be used in order to reduce test effort and reduce cost of design.

Practical implications

The presented methodology reduces for new designs test effort and development cost and gives an implication of robust motor topology for demagnetization effects.

Originality/value

It is the first paper where demagnetization effects have been studied theoretically and in laboratory in order to find the most robust design, reduce magnet cost by reduction of dysprosium content and develop simulation procedure for analysis of demagnetizations behaviours of interior and surface permanent magnet.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a novel method to identify demagnetization faults in the magnet of a permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) using some externally measurable parameter.

Design/methodology/approach

The machine is modelled by using permeance network theory. The new feature introduced in the permeance network is the subdivision of magnets into segments, modelled as bidirectional elements. These bidirectional elements allow taking into account the effect of one element on the other. To detect the demagnetization faults, a gradient‐based algorithm is also developed. This algorithm uses the permeance network model of the PMSM and measurement data of some parameter to find the distribution of remanent induction in the magnet segments.

Findings

The methodology presented is able to detect the demagnetization fault using an external data. The measurement data in this paper is obtained through finite element simulations. The fast and accurate convergence of the algorithm makes the model to find its place in magnet fault diagnosis. Results for different magnet fault types have been presented.

Originality/value

This new approach to detect demagnetization fault can serve as a step towards development of better fault‐detection algorithms and fault‐tolerant control schemes.

Abstract

The recent achievements in electronic control as well as the higher performance of advanced permanent magnets have brought about a change in the general strategy for design and development of new types of small electrical machines. A special application of permanent magnets (PM) is represented by hybrid stepping motors (HSM). The latter are a sort of combination of variable reluctance‐motors and permanent magnet‐motors. The influence of various PM inserts into the magnetic circuits of electromechanical converters on field and force distribution has been already investigated by the authors (1996). Promising results for HSM have been reported, especially when rare‐earth PMs are used. The main aim of PM inserting, when they are put into slots of slotted pole shoes with radial N‐S polarization, is to focus magnetic field lines in the corresponding teeth. As a result, the reluctance stepping torque can be increased depending on the material used. Now a further step is made by extending the analysis from the case of linear to that of non‐linear demagnetization curves of permanent magnets.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to further develop stator permanent magnet (PM) type memory machines by providing generalized design guidelines for double-stator memory machines (DSMMs) with hybrid PMs. This paper discusses the design experience of DSMMs and presents a comparative study of radial magnetization (RM) and circumferential magnetization (CM) types.

Design/methodology/approach

It begins with an introduction to RM and CM operating principles and magnetization mechanisms. Then, a comparative study is conducted for one of the RM-DSMM rotor pole pairs, inner and outer stator clamping angles and low coercive force PMs thickness. Finally, the two machines’ finite element simulation performance is compared. The validity of the proposed machine structure is demonstrated.

Findings

In this paper, the double-stator structure is extended to parallel hybrid PM memory machines, and two novel DSMMs with RM and CM configurations are proposed. Two types of DSMMs have PMs and magnetizing windings on the inner stator and armature windings on the outer stator. The main difference between the two is the arrangement of PMs on the inner stator.

Originality/value

Conventional stator PM memory machines have geometrical space conflicts between the PM and armature windings. The proposed double-stator structure can alleviate these conflicts and increase the torque density accordingly. In addition, this paper contributes to comparing the arrangement of hybrid PMs for DSMMs.

Abstract

Purpose

With the popularization of permanent magnet linear synchronous machines (PMLSMs) in recent years, the temperature rise has attracted increasingly attention since excessive heat generated in the windings could deteriorate the electromagnetic performance. In order to solve this problem, adopting water-cooled system is an effective method. The purpose of this paper is to investigate a 12-slot/11-pole (12S/11P) water-cooled double-sided PMLSM, which adopts the all teeth wound concentrated winding and shifted armature ends.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on 2D finite element analysis (FEA), the thermal performances, such as temperature distribution, the optimization of water flow rate and the influence of demagnetization, are investigated under the condition of continuous duty. Then the maximum current density and average thrust force are calculated for PMLSMs with or without water-cooled system. Finally, the detailed comparison is made between single-sided PMLSM and double-sided PMLSM.

Findings

With water-cooled system, the thermal performance of PMLSM can be improved, such as an efficient decrease of temperature rise, restriction of permanent magnet demagnetization and a dramatic increase of the maximum thrust force. It is found that the water flow rate has a significant impact on temperature rise, which can be optimized according to demands.

Originality/value

Electromagnetic and thermal coupled analysis is proposed in this paper. It can approximately predict thermal performance and save the manual iteration time at the same time. This method also can provide as a reference of thermal analysis for other PMLSMs.

This paper is devoted to the investigation of the potentialities of induction motor DTC strategies in position control applications.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper is devoted to the investigation of the potentialities of induction motor DTC strategies in position control applications.

Design/methodology/approach

A comparison study is carried out between two DTC strategies dedicated to position control applications such as robotic: the Takahashi DTC strategy where the induction motor is fed by a two‐level inverter and a new DTC strategy where the induction motor is fed by a three‐level inverter. Special attention is paid to the synthesis of the vector selection table of the second strategy in an attempt to guarantee a high dynamic with reduced ripple of the torque. The comparison study is achieved considering four performance criteria: phase current total harmonic distortion; inverter switching loss factor; quality factor; and inverter commutation frequency.

Findings

It has been found that the introduced DTC strategy offers higher performance than the Takahashi one. Of particular interest are: the reduction of both torque ripple and commutation frequency; the eradication of the demagnetization problem which is a vital requirement in position control applications; and the improvement of the power factor thanks to which a reduction of the inverter rating is gained.

Research limitations/implications

This work should be extended considering the validation of the obtained simulation results through experiments.

Originality/value

The paper proposes a new DTC strategy dedicated to position control applications. It allows the elimination of the demagnetization problem from which suffers the Takahashi DTC strategy at low speeds especially at zero speed in position control applications. It also offers a high power factor which opens up crucial cost benefits as far as the inverter rating is concerned.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to comparatively study the conventional, i.e. single magnet, and novel hybrid-magnet switched-flux permanent-magnet (HMSFPM) machines.

Design/methodology/approach

The HMSFPM machines utilize two magnet types, i.e. low-cost ferrites and NdFeB. Thus, a set of magnet ratios (?), defined as the quotient of the NdFeB volume to the total PM volume, is introduced. This allows any desired performance and cost trade-off to be designed. Series- and parallel-excited magnet configurations are investigated using 2-dimensional finite element analysis.

Findings

The torque of the HMSFPM machines is lower than the NdFeB SFPM machine but the flux-weakening performance is improved for similar machine efficiency. If the machine dimensions are unconstrained, the HMSFPM machines can have the same torque for reduced material costs and a moderate increase in machine dimensions. Ferrite SFPM machines have the lowest cost for the same torque but a significant increase in machine dimensions is required. Finally, the series-excited HMSFPM machine is the preferred over the parallel-excited HMSFPM machine because it has superior demagnetization withstand capability.

Research limitations/implications

Mechanical and winding eddy current losses are not considered in the efficiency map calculations.

Originality/value

The NdFeB SFPM, ferrite SFPM, series-excited HMSFPM, and the parallel-excited HMSFPM machines are compared for their electromagnetic performance, flux-weakening, PM demagnetization, efficiency, and material costs.
