Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a method to create 3-D finite element meshes automatically using the Delaunay tetrahedralization with the weighted node density technique. Using this method, the adaptive finite element analysis (FEA) was carried out for the calculation of the magnetic field of an eddy current verification model to clarify the usefulness of the method. Moreover, the error evaluation function for the adaptive FEA was also discussed.

Design/methodology/approach

The method to create the 3-D finite element meshes using the Delaunay tetrahedralization is realized by the weighted node density technique, and Zienkiewicz-Zhu’s error estimator is used as the error evaluation function of the adaptive FEA.

Findings

The magnetic flux density vectors on the node in the error evaluation function for the adaptive FEA should be calculated with the weighted average by the reciprocal of the volume of elements.

Originality/value

This paper describes the method to create 3-D finite element meshes and the comparison among calculation methods of the magnetic flux density vectors on the node for the error estimator.

Abstract

Purpose

The rigid spherical particle models proposed in the literature for modeling fracture in rock have some difficulties in reproducing both the observed macroscopic hard rock triaxial failure enveloped and compressive to tensile strength ratio. The purpose of this paper is to obtain a better agreement with the experimental behavior by presenting a 3D generalized rigid particle contact model based on a multiple contact point formulation, which allows moment transmission and includes in a straightforward manner the effect of friction at the contact level.

Design/methodology/approach

The explicit formulation of a generalized contact model is initially presented, then the proposed model is validated against known triaxial and Brazilian tests of Lac du Bonnet granite rock. The influence of moment transmission at the contact level, the number of contacts per particle and the contact friction coefficient are assessed.

Findings

The proposed contact model model, GCM‐3D, gives an excellent agreement with the Lac du Bonet granite rock, strength envelope and compressive to tensile strength ratio. It is shown that it is important to have a contact model that: defines inter‐particle interactions using a Delaunay edge criteria; includes in its formulation a contact friction coefficient; and incorporates moment transmission at the contact level.

Originality/value

The explicit formulation of a new generalized 3D contact model, GCM‐3D, is proposed. The most important features of the model, moment transmission through multiple point contacts, contact friction term contribution for the shear strength and contact activation criteria that lead to a best agreement with hard rock experimental values are introduced and discussed in an integrated manner for the first time. An important contribution for rock fracture modeling, the formulation here presented can be readily incorporated into commercial and open source software rigid particle models.

Abstract

Purpose

The class of models that can be represented by STL files is larger than the class of models that can be printed using additive manufacturing technologies. Stated differently, there exist well-formed STL files that cannot be printed. This paper aims to formalize such a gap and describe a fully automatic procedure to turn any such file into a printable model.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on well-established concepts from combinatorial topology, this paper provide an unambiguous description of all the mathematical entities involved in the modeling-printing pipeline. Specifically, this paper formally defines the conditions that an STL file must satisfy to be printable, and, based on these, an as-exact-as-possible repairing algorithm is designed.

Findings

It has been found that, to cope with all the possible triangle configurations, the algorithm must distinguish between triangles that bind solid parts and triangles that constitute zero-thickness sheets. Only the former set can be fixed without distortion.

Research limitations/implications

Owing to the specific approach used that tracks the so-called “outer hull,” models with inner cavities cannot be treated.

Practical implications

Thanks to this new method, the shift from a 3D model to a printed prototype is faster, easier and more reliable.

Social implications

The availability of this easily accessible model preparation tool has the potential to foster a wider diffusion of home-made 3D printing in non-professional communities.

Originality/value

Previous methods that are guaranteed to fix all the possible configurations provide only approximate solutions with an unnecessary distortion. Conversely, this procedure is as exact as possible, meaning that no visible distortion is introduced unless it is strictly imposed by limitations of the printing device. Thanks to such unprecedented flexibility and accuracy, this algorithm is expected to significantly simplify the modeling-printing process, in particular within the continuously emerging non-professional “maker” communities.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to advance the multiphysics analysis of helicopter rotors under icing conditions by coupling the iced rotor’s aerodynamics, analyzed by CFD, with the rotor’s structural characteristics, analyzed by CSD.

Design/methodology/approach

The current work introduces supercomputer-based computational approaches capable of assessing the impact of ice accretion on the aerodynamics, blade dynamics, vibrations and loading of a rotorcraft. The rigid and elastic motions of the blades are accounted for through a loose coupling of the flow solver to a multibody dynamics solver. The coupling framework allows for comprehensive aeroelastic simulations of iced rotors in hover and in forward flight.

Findings

The flow and structural modules were validated on a full helicopter configuration in forward flight using the ROBIN experimental model. The tip structural deflections were in very close agreement with the experimental measurements.

Research limitations/implications

The results of the CFD analyses are limited by the available experimental results they can be compared to. In dry air CFD, three-dimensional (3D) experiments occur first and CFD is then compared to them; in icing, the opposite is true: 3D experiments (if they are ever done, as they are very expensive) chase CFD and sometimes never occur.

Practical implications

This paper presents an outline of how CFD and computational stress dynamics (CSD) analyses can be linked and provides a toolbox for deeper investigation of the complex flows over helicopters operating under difficult in-flight icing conditions.

Social implications

More and more helicopters are designed to be able to operate in hostile environments such as rescuing and saving lives over the oceans or mountains, conditions under which icing encounters cannot be avoided.

Originality/value

A loosely coupled CFD/CSD framework that accounts for the rotor blades structural response to aerodynamic loading and ice accretion in hover and forward flight has been presented. This versatile and cost-effective framework provides a more accurate estimation of the helicopter rotor performance and its degradation due to icing encounters during the early design stages than traditional CFD tools.
