Abstract

The phenomenon of fabric deformation can be observed not only keeping in mind the type of material, the raw material, geometric and constructive parameters, but also the conditions which which material is exposed under action of tensile force (the size of force, time, velocity of acting and so on). Investigates the influence of the tensile force size on total deformation as well as the deformation components: elastic, viscoelastic and plastic. Reports an experiment conducted on clothing wool fabrics (18 different samples) which were exposed to various tensile forces (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 per cent of breaking force) during 15 minutes. After this time limit had expired, their relaxation in a period of 24 hours was examined. From the diagrams of fabric relaxation (126 diagrams), determines deformation components and presents a summary using diagrams. On the basis of imposed analysis claims it can be stated that elastic deformation component predominates while no plastic deformation exists at lower values of tensile force.

Abstract

Purpose

The elastic deformation of crankshaft bearing surface will be caused when acted by oil film pressure, which will affect the lubrication performance of crankshaft bearing. The model of the single bearing housing was usually used in the calculation of the elastic deformation of bearing surface. In actual internal combustion engine, the main bearing housing is combined together with engine block; deformation of the main bearing surface will be affected by deformation of the engine block. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of deformation of the whole engine block on the hydrodynamic lubrication performance of main bearings.

Design/methodology/approach

The loads of main bearings were calculated by the whole crankshaft beam‐element finite element method. The lubrication of crankshaft bearings was analyzed by dynamic method. The elastic deformations of bearing surface under oil film pressure were calculated by compliance matrix method. The compliance matrix was established by finite element analysis.

Findings

It may be not necessary to consider the effect of elastic deformation of bearing surface under film pressure in the lubrication analyses of main bearings for internal combustion engine when the very high calculating accuracy is not required.

Originality/value

The elastohydrodynamic lubrications of crankshaft bearings considering the deformation of engine block were analyzed for the main bearings of an engine. Till now, whether or not the complicated model of the whole cylinder block should be considered to calculate the elastic deformation of main bearing surface in the lubrication analyses of crankshaft main bearings has not been done.

Abstract

In this paper, values of deformation components (elastic, viscoelastic, plastic) of clothing wool fabrics by measuring the crease recovery angle in various directions to the warp direction (0°‐warp, 30°, 45°, 60°, and 90°‐weft) were determined. The size as well as the change of deformation component from warp to weft direction was presented through polar diagrams. On the basis of the results of investigation it is possible to conclude that all investigated fabrics (plain, 2/2 twill, cross twill), regardless of the biaxiality concerning quickly reversible (elastic) deformation, tend toward isotropy in total reversible deformation (elastic + viscoelastic). Concerning the plastic deformation value, mentioned investigated fabrics also express tendency toward isotropy.

This paper aims to study the deformation mechanism of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) oil seal under a wide temperature range cycle.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study the deformation mechanism of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) oil seal under a wide temperature range cycle.

Design/methodology/approach

This study categorizes the oil seal operation into three states: assembly, heating-up and cooling. The deformation equation for the oil seal is developed for each state, considering the continuity between them. The investigation of the oil seal’s deformation trends and mechanisms is performed using the ANSYS Workbench.

Findings

The assembling process results in a radial shrinkage of the skeleton, causing the centroid to move toward the axis. During heating-up, the outer diameter of the skeleton slightly expands, whereas the inner diameter sharply contracts toward the axis, leading to a further reduction in the centroid’s distance from the axis. Upon cooling, both the inner and outer diameters continue to contract toward the axis, causing the centroid to persist in its movement toward the axis. Consequently, after undergoing a heating-up and cooling cycle ranging from 20°C to 180°C, the outer diameter of the PTFE oil seal reduces by 0.92 mm from its original deformation, ensuring minimal contact between the skeleton and housing. As a result of the reduced static friction torque at the skeleton, the oil seal rotates along the shaft.

Originality/value

The deformation mechanism of PTFE oil seals under a wide temperature range cycle was investigated, aiming to address the concerns related to the rotation along the shaft and leakage.

Abstract

Purpose

Nowadays, in building structures, dampers are connected to the building structure to reduce the damages caused by seismicity in addition to enhancing structural stability, and to connect dampers with the structure, joints are used. In this paper, three different configurations of double-lap joints were designed, developed and tested.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper aims to analyze three different categories of double-lap single-bolted joints that are used in connecting dampers with concrete and steel frame structures. These joints were designed and tested using computational, numerical and experimental methods. The studies were conducted to examine the reactions of the joints during loading conditions and to select the best joints for the structures that allow easy maintenance of the dampers and also withstand structural deformation when the damper is active during seismicity. Also, a computational analysis was performed on the designed joints integrated with the M25 concrete beam column junction. In this investigation, experimental study was carried out in addition to numerical and computational methods during cyclic load.

Findings

It was observed from the result that during deformation the double-base multiplate lap joint was suitable for buildings because the deformations on the joint base was negligible when compared with other joints. From the computational analysis, it was revealed that the three double joints while integrated with the beam column junction of M25 grade concrete structure, the damages induced by the double-base multiplate joint was negligible when compared with other two joints used in this study.

Originality/value

To prevent the collapse of the building during seismicity, dampers are used and further connecting the damper with the building structures, joints are used. In this paper, three double-lap joints in different design configuration were studied using computational, numerical and experimental techniques.

Abstract

Purpose

The assembly simulation in tolerance analysis is one of the most important steps for the tolerance design of mechanical products. However, most assembly simulation methods are based on the rigid body assumption, and those assembly simulation methods considering deformation have a poor efficiency. This paper aims to propose a novel efficient and precise tolerance analysis method based on stable contact to improve the efficiency and reliability of assembly deformation simulation.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed method comprehensively considers the initial rigid assembly state, the assembly deformation and the stability examination of assembly simulation to improve the reliability of tolerance analysis results. The assembly deformation of mating surfaces was first calculated based on the boundary element method with optimal initial assembly state, then the stability of assembly simulation results was assessed by the density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise algorithm to improve the reliability of tolerance analysis. Finally, combining the small displacement torsor theory, the tolerance scheme was statistically analyzed based on sufficient samples.

Findings

A case study of a guide rail model demonstrated the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed method.

Research limitations/implications

The present study only considered the form error when generating the skin model shape, and the waviness and the roughness of the matching surface were not considered.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the proposed method is original in the assembly simulation considering stable contact, which can effectively ensure the reliability of the assembly simulation while taking into account the computational efficiency.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the sealing performance of S-CO2 dry gas seals (DGSs) by considering the effects of pressure-induced deformation, thermal deformation and coupling deformation.

Design/methodology/approach

A hydrodynamic lubrication flow model of S-CO2 DGS was established, and the model was solved using the finite difference and finite element methods. The pressure-induced deformation and thermal deformation of the sealing ring, as well as the sealing performance under the effects of pressure-induced deformation, thermal deformation and coupling deformation, were obtained.

Findings

The deformation of the sealing ring is mainly thermal deformation. The influence of pressure-induced deformation on leakage and gas film stiffness is greater than that of thermal deformation and coupling deformation. However, thermal deformation has a greater impact on friction torque and minimum film thickness than pressure-induced deformation and coupling deformation. The influence of deformations on sealing performance is important.

Originality/value

The sealing performance of S-CO2 DGSs was analyzed considering the effect of pressure-induced deformation, thermal deformation and coupling deformation, which can provide a theoretical basis for S-CO2 DGS optimization design.

Abstract

Purpose

An accurate prediction of the deformation of retaining structures is critical for ensuring the stability and safety of braced deep excavations, while the high nonlinear and complex nature of the deformation makes the prediction challenging. This paper proposes an explainable boosted combining global and local feature multivariate regression (EB-GLFMR) model with high accuracy, robustness and interpretability to predict the deformation of retaining structures during braced deep excavations.

Design/methodology/approach

During the model development, the time series of deformation data is decomposed using a locally weighted scatterplot smoothing technique into trend and residual terms. The trend terms are analyzed through multiple adaptive spline regressions. The residual terms are reconstructed in phase space to extract both global and local features, which are then fed into a gradient-boosting model for prediction.

Findings

The proposed model outperforms other established approaches in terms of accuracy and robustness, as demonstrated through analyzing two cases of braced deep excavations.

Research limitations/implications

The model is designed for the prediction of the deformation of deep excavations with stepped, chaotic and fluctuating features. Further research needs to be conducted to expand the model applicability to other time series deformation data.

Practical implications

The model provides an efficient, robust and transparent approach to predict deformation during braced deep excavations. It serves as an effective decision support tool for engineers to ensure the stability and safety of deep excavations.

Originality/value

The model captures the global and local features of time series deformation of retaining structures and provides explicit expressions and feature importance for deformation trends and residuals, making it an efficient and transparent approach for deformation prediction.

Abstract

Purpose

The floating ring generates elastic deformation as the film pressure for high-speed floating ring bearings (FRBs). The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of ring elastic deformation on the performance of a hydrodynamic/hydrostatic FRB, including floating ring equilibrium and minimum film thickness.

Design/methodology/approach

The finite element method and finite difference method are used to solve thermohydrodynamic (THD) lubrication models, including the Reynolds equation, energy equation and temperature–viscosity equation. The deformation matrix method is applied to solve the elastic deformation equation, and then the deformation distribution, floating ring equilibrium and minimum film thickness are investigated. The maximum pressure is compared with the published article to verify the mathematical models.

Findings

The deformation value increases with the growth of shaft speed; owing to elastic deformation on the film reaction force and friction moment, the ring achieves equilibrium at a new position, and the inner eccentricity increases while the ring-shaft speed ratio declines. The minimum film thickness declines with the growth of inlet temperature, and the outer film tends to rupture considering elastic deformation at a higher temperature.

Originality/value

The floating ring elastic deformation is coupled with the THD lubrication equations to study ring deformation on the hydrodynamic/hydrostatic FRB lubrication mechanism. The elastic deformation of floating ring should be considered to improve analysis accuracy for FRBs.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the variation of temperature field, pressure field and deformation of hydrostatic thrust bearing under different working conditions, so as to provide a theoretical basis for improving accuracy and reliability.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, the double rectangular hydrostatic bearing of type Q1-224 was selected as the research object, and the simulation was carried out according to different working conditions, and the obtained data were summarized regularly.

Findings

It is found that the overall temperature of hydrostatic bearing increases with the increase of speed and load, and the increase in load will result in a larger pressure distribution which first increases and then decreases with the speed. The deformation trend of the deformation field is found, and it is found that the force deformation is larger than the thermal deformation at low rotational speed, and the thermal deformation is larger than the force deformation at high rotational speed.

Originality/value

In this study, the fluid-structure coupling method of conjugate heat transfer is applied to study the whole hydrostatic bearing. Most of the previous studies only studied the oil film and considered the influence of the convective heat transfer between the hydrostatic bearing and the air in heat transfer, which is rarely seen in the previous research literature.
