Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the feasibility of creating a declarative user interface language suitable for rapid prototyping of mobile and Web apps. Moreover, this paper presents a new framework for creating responsive user interfaces using JavaScript.
Design/methodology/approach
Very little existing research has been done in JavaScript-specific declarative user interface (UI) languages for mobile Web apps. This paper introduces a new framework, along with several case studies that create modern responsive designs programmatically.
Findings
The fully implemented prototype verifies the feasibility of a JavaScript-based declarative user interface library. This paper demonstrates that existing solutions are unwieldy and cumbersome to dynamically create and adjust nodes within a visual syntax of program code.
Originality/value
This paper presents the Guix.js platform, a declarative UI library for rapid development of Web-based mobile interfaces in JavaScript.

Abstract
Purpose
This study proposes to adopt joint application design (JAD) in the requirement gathering process on developing a knowledge management system (KMS) using Fernandez methodology. It is proposed that Fernandez methodology produces only a list of KMS features and the requirement of the feature is still unclear. This study aims to produce KMS that meets the needs and expectations of users based on features of Fernandez's methodology.
Design/methodology/approach
This study was conducted using a combination methodology that combines Fernandez methodology to identify the feature needs of the organization and JAD to identify user requirements of KMS. The system prototype is evaluated by measuring user satisfaction using the Post Study System Usability Questionnaire.
Findings
The results of this study indicate that with the adoption of JAD it is possible to get the requirement in accordance with the expectations of the user. In addition, this study also shows that the level of user satisfaction with the prototype developed with the requirement is high at 84% of the maximum score.
Research limitations/implications
This study was used only in the education context, especially teaching assistant problems at the Faculty of Computer Science, University of Indonesia. For this reason, further research is needed for different contexts so that the implementation of this combination of methods can be generalized more broadly.
Practical implications
This paper provides practical implications for the development of KMS by identifying user requirements using JAD.
Originality/value
This paper provides a combination method to generate KMS that meets user requirements.

Purpose
Fish quarantine is a measure to prevent the entry and spread of quarantine fish pests and diseases abroad and from one area to another within Indonesia's territory. Based on these backgrounds, this study aims to identify the knowledge, knowledge management (KM) processes and knowledge management system (KMS) priority needs for quarantine fish and other fishery products measures (QMFFP) and then develop a classification model and web-based decision support system (DSS) for QMFFP decisions.
Design/methodology/approach
This research methodology uses combination approaches, namely, contingency factor analysis (CFA), the cross-industry standard process for data mining (CRISP-DM) and knowledge management system development life cycle (KMSDLC). The CFA for KM solution design is performed by identifying KM processes and KMS priorities. The CRISP-DM for decision classification model is done by using a decision tree algorithm. The KMSDLC is used to develop a web-based DSS.
Findings
The highest priority requirements of KM technology for QMFFP are data mining and DSS with predictive features. The main finding of this study is to show that web-based DSS (functions and outputs) can support and accelerate QMFFP decisions by regulations and field practice needs. The DSS was developed using the CTree algorithm model, which has six main attributes and eight rules.
Originality/value
This study proposes a novel comprehensive framework for developing DSS (combination of CFA, CRISP-DM and KMSDLC), a novel classification model resulting from comparing two decision tree algorithms and a novel web-based DSS for QMFFP.

This chapter explores the use of three different approaches to capturing other perspectives in lesson study: lesson artefacts, pupil voice and pupil participatory approaches. Lesson artefacts and pupil voice appear to be the more common, whereas pupil participatory approaches are more recent initiatives in a lesson study context. Observation of pupils provides one perspective, but is limited because, among other things, it does not include the pupils’ perspectives. These approaches, especially when used together in triangulation, can provide a broader and potentially deeper understanding of pupil learning.

Abstract
Purpose
Many features constitute an adaptive system such as user model, interface specification, business functionalities and service implementation. Context awareness is an important facet of service oriented application creation dealing with the gathering, use and representation of context information. Generally, user interfaces and services communities work separately on the adaptation process and do not converge. The aim of this work is to manage the system’s functionalities and the user interface that delivers data to the relevant consumer early since the design phase until the code generation.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors discuss how a unified method based on a model-driven architecture for adaptive user interface and pervasive service creation eases the work of designers and developers, limits incompatibility issues and supports dynamic generation of systems adapted to different contexts of use.
Findings
The proposed approach is able to support a semi-automatic ubiquitous application generation with service, behavior, presentation and content adaptation.
Originality/value
In this paper, the authors tackle context-awareness at two levels: system functionalities and user interface generation. The authors also tackle adaptation at the specification and implementation levels.

Abstract
Purpose
The present study aimed to present a structural model of the relationships between personality traits, metacognitive awareness, creativity and academic achievement in virtual students.
Design/methodology/approach
The statistical population of the study consisted of all students of the electronic Islamic Azad University in Tehran, where 240 of them were selected as sample group by random sampling method. Research instruments included the short form of the Creative Behavior Inventory (Linger), the Metacognitive Awareness Questionnaire (Schraw and Dennison) and NEO Personality Inventory (McCrae and Costa). Data were analyzed using LISERL software and the path analysis method.
Findings
The findings indicated a mediating role of metacognitive awareness and creativity in the relationship between extraversion, openness to experience and conscientiousness personality traits with academic performance. It was also found that metacognitive awareness has a direct, significant positive effect on creativity.
Originality/value
According to the results of the present study, the level of creativity in virtual students can be developed through training and strengthening meta-cognitive skills. The findings also suggest that meta-cognition and creativity are traits that can have intrinsic and personality roots.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to describe the technical features, underlying concepts and implementation details of a novel Building Information Modeling (BIM)-integrated, graph-based platform developed to support BIM for facilities management through a usability driven visual representation of the construction operations building information exchange (COBie) spreadsheet data.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper is based on the iterative steps of design thinking and agile software development methodology. The conceptual development of the VisualCOBie platform is based on Gestalt’s principles of visual perception to facilitate usability and comprehension of the COBie data.
Findings
The paper demonstrates that Gestalt’s principles of visual perception provide a suitable conceptual as well as implementable basis for improving the usability and comprehension of COBie spreadsheets. The implemented BIM-integrated, graph-based VisualCOBie platform supports visual navigation and dynamic search, reducing the cognitive load of large spreadsheets that are common in facilities management software.
Research limitations/implications
The usability, visual search and dependencies-based search of VisualCOBie can potentially transform how we implement and use facilities and information management systems in construction, where large spreadsheets are frequently used in conjunction with BIM and other tools. VisualCOBie also provides usability-based step towards BIM for facilities management.
Originality/value
The VisualCOBie approach provides a novel user interface and information management platform. This paper may also foster a potential paradigm shift in our approach to the representation and use of information exchange standards such as COBie, which are required to facilitate the research and practice on BIM for facilities management.

This paper introduces XML user‐interface language (XUL) and its use in Mozilla/Firefox extensions. It also describes OPAX, a prototype XUL OPAC user interface based on the Mozilla Amazon Browser.
Design/methodology/approach
Extensions offer a clear illustration of the strength of open‐source software.
Findings
XUL could have a major impact on the functionality, ease of development and interoperability of user interfaces for a range of library systems.
Practical implications
There is a distinct move towards declarative, markup‐driven user interfaces. It is not yet clear whether XUL will emerge as the leader in this field, although its leverage of common standards and its long and excellent track record make this the ideal scenario.
Originality/value
For anyone not yet convinced that the move from IE to a Mozilla browser can only improve their productivity, extensions should decide the issue.

Context correctness and fault handling are very important to the quality of service in context‐aware applications. However, they are often ignored by researchers and application developers. This paper aims to present a model for context‐aware applications.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper proposes a transaction model for context‐aware applications, in order to provide a uniform infrastructure for service quality management.
Findings
The paper finds that, in this model, context‐aware applications are organized as a number of logic units and each unit may have a compensation module, which will be executed when errors or exceptions occur during the execution of those applications in order to minimize the bad infection. This model supports nested scopes and the number of levels of subtransactions is unlimited.
Practical implications
The paper also presents an implementation of this transaction model, which is specialized for context‐aware use.
Originality/value
This paper utilized a novel transaction model to manage the quality of context‐aware applications. The authors have not seen similar work on this topic.

Purpose
The paper aims to study realization requirements for the flexible enactment of artifact-centric business processes in a dynamic, collaborative environment and to develop a workflow execution framework that can effectively address those requirements.
Design/methodology/approach
This study proposed a framework and contract-based, event-driven architecture design and implementation that can directly realize collaborative artifact-centric business processes in service-oriented architecture (SOA) without any model conversion.
Findings
The results show that the approach is feasible in presenting several key benefits over the use of existing workflow systems to run artifact-centric processes.
Originality/value
Most of the existing approaches require an artifact-centric model to be transformed into executable workflow languages to run on existing workflow management systems. This study argues that the model conversion can incur losses of information and affect traceability and monitoring ability of workflows, especially in an SOA where a workflow can span across multiple inter-business entities.
