Abstract

Purpose

The interaction between hydraulic fracture (HF) and natural fracture (NF) in naturally fractured rocks is critical for hydraulic fracturing. This paper aims to focus on investigating the development of tensile and shear debonding zone on the NF caused by the stresses produced by HF, and the influence of NF’s debonding behavior on the interaction between HF and NF.

Design/methodology/approach

Theoretically, tensile and shear debonding modes of NF are considered, two dimensionless parameters are proposed to characterize the difficulty of tensile and shear failure of NF, respectively. Numerically, a finite element model combining the extended finite element method and cohesive zone method (CZM) is proposed to study NF’s debonding behavior and its influence on the interaction between HF and NF.

Findings

Both theoretical analysis and numerical simulation show the existence of two debonding modes. The numerical results also show that the HF can cross, offset or propagate along the NFs depending on the parameters’ value, resulting in different fracture network and stimulated reservoir volume. When they are large, the NF’s debonding area is small, HF tends to cross the NF and the fracture network is simple; when they are small, the NF’s debonding area is large, HF will propagate along the NF. In addition, HF is easier to propagate along with NF under tensile debonding mode while it is easier to pass through NF under shear debonding mode.

Originality/value

The theoretical and numerical considerations are taken into account in the influence of the debonding of NFs on the interaction between HFs and NFs and the influence on the formation of the fracture network.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to introduce a methodology aimed to detect debonding induced by low impacts energies in typical aeronautical structures. The methodology is based on high frequency sensors/actuators system simulation and the application of elliptical triangulation (ET) and probability ellipse (PE) methods as damage detector. Numerical and experimental results on small-scale stiffened panels made of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic material are discussed.

Design/methodology/approach

The damage detection methodology is based on high frequency sensors/actuators piezoceramics system enabling the ET and the PE methods. The approach is based on ultrasonic guided waves propagation measurement and simulation within the structure and perturbations induced by debonding or impact damage that affect the signal characteristics.

Findings

The work is focused on debonding detection via test and simulations and calculation of damage indexes (DIs). The ET and PE methodologies have demonstrated the link between the DIs and debonding enabling the identification of position and growth of the damage.

Originality/value

The debonding between two structural elements caused in manufacturing or in-service is very difficult to detect, especially when the components are in low accessibility areas. This criticality, together with the uncertainty of long-term adhesive performance and the inability to continuously assess the debonding condition, induces the aircrafts’ manufacturers to pursuit ultraconservative design approach, with in turn an increment in final weight of these parts. The aim of this research’s activity is to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology and the robustness of the structural health monitoring system to detect debonding in a typical aeronautical structural joint.

Abstract

Purpose

Near-surface mounted (NSM) fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) rod is extensively applied in reinforced concrete (RC) structures. The mechanical performances of NSM FRP-strengthened RC structures depend on the bond behavior between NSM reinforcement and concrete. This behavior is typically studied by performing pull-out tests; however, the failure behavior, which is crucial to the local debonding process, is not yet sufficiently understood.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, a three-dimensional meso-scale finite element method considering the cohesion and adhesion failures is presented to model the debonding failure process in pull-out tests of NSM FRP rod in concrete. The smeared crack model is used to capture the cohesion failures in the adhesive or concrete. The interfacial constitutive model is applied to simulate the adhesion failures on the FRP-adhesive and concrete-adhesive contact interfaces.

Findings

The present method is first validated by two simple examples and then applied to a practical NSM FRP system. This work studied in detail the debonding process, the bond failure types, the location of peak bond stress, the transmitting deformation in adhesive and the morphology of contact zone. The developed method provides a practical and convenient tool applicable for further investigations on the debonding mechanism for the NSM FRP rod in concrete.

Originality/value

Purpose

Due to its inexpensive production costs, low stress concentration and maintenance-friendliness, the adhesive bonded pipe joint is frequently utilized for pipe connection. However, further theoretical analysis is needed to understand the debonding failure mechanism of such bonded pipe joints under axial tension.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, based on the bi-linear cohesive zone model, the integrated closed-form solutions were derived by considering the axial stiffness ratio and failure stage to determine the relative interfacial slip, interfacial shear stress and relationship of tension–displacement in the bonded pipe joint.

Findings

Additionally, solutions for the critical bonded length and the ultimate load capacity were put forth. Besides, the numerical study was conducted to verify the theoretical solutions regarding the load–displacement relationship. The interfacial shear stress distribution at different failure stages was presented to understand the interfacial shear stress transmission and debonding process. The effect of bonded length on the ultimate load and ductility of pipe joints was also discussed.

Originality/value

The findings in this study can give a reference for the design of bonded pipe joints in their actual engineering applications.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the bond behaviour between fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) sheets and concrete elements, starting from available experimental evidences, through a calibrated and upgraded 3D mathematical‐numerical model.

Design/methodology/approach

The complex mechanism of debonding/peeling failure of FRP reinforcement is studied within the context of damage mechanics to appropriately catch transversal effects and developing a more realistic and comprehensive study of the delamination process. The FE ABAQUS© code has been supplemented with a numerical procedure accounting for Mazars's damage law inside the contact algorithm.

Findings

It has been shown that such an approach is able to catch the delamination evolution during loading processes as well.

Originality/value

A Drucker‐Prager constitutive law is adopted for concrete whereas FRP elements are assumed to behave in a linear‐elastic manner, possibly undertaking large strains/displacements. Surface‐to‐surface contact conditions have been applied between FRP and adjacent concrete, including the enhancement given by the strain‐softening law according to Mazars' damage model. The procedure has been introduced to describe the coupled behaviour between concrete, FRP and adhesive resulting in specific bonding‐debonding features under different load levels.

Abstract

Purpose

The maintenance of aircraft structure with lower cost is one of the prime concerns to regulatory authorities. The carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) patches are widely used to repair the cracked structure. The demands and application of CFRP compel its price to increase in the near future. A distinct perspective of repairing the cracked aluminum panel with the hybrid composite patch is presented in this paper. The purpose of this paper is to propose an alternative patch material in the form of a hybrid composite patch which can provide economical repair solution.

Design/methodology/approach

The patch hybridization is performed by preparing the hybrid composite from tows of carbon fiber and glass fiber. Rule of hybrid mixture and modified Halpin–Tsai’s equation are used to evaluate the elastic constant. The stress intensity factor and interfacial stresses are determined using finite element analysis. The debonding initiation load is evaluated after testing under mode-I loading condition.

Findings

The hybrid composite patch has rendered the adequate performance for reduction of stress intensity in the cracked panel and control of interfacial stresses in the adhesive layer. The repair efficiency and repair durability of the composite patch repair was ensured by incorporation of the hybrid composite patch.

Originality/value

The studies involving patch hybridization for the application of composite patch repair are presently lacking. The influence of the patch stiffness, methodology to prepare the hybrid composite patch and effects of hybridization on the performance of composite patch repair is presented in this paper.

Abstract

Purpose

Large structural objects, primarily concrete bridges, can be reinforced by gluing to their stretched surface tapes of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP). The condition for this technology to work requires the quality of the bonding of FRP and the concrete to be perfect. Possible defects may arise in the phase of construction but also as a result of long-term fatigue loads. These defects having different forms of voids and discontinuities in the bonding layer are difficult to detect by optical inspection. This paper aims to describe the development of a rapid and nondestructive method for quantitative assessment of the debonding between materials.

Design/methodology/approach

The applied technique belongs to the wide class of active infrared (IR) thermography, the principle of which is to heat (or cool) the investigated object, and determine the properties of interest from the recorded, by an IR camera, temperature field. The methodology implemented in this work is to uniformly heat for a few seconds, using a set of halogen lamps, the FRP surface attached to the concrete. The parameter of interest is the thermal resistance of the layer separating the polymer tape and the concrete. The presence of voids and debonding will result in large values of this resistance. Its value is retrieved by solving an inverse transient heat conduction problem. This is accomplished by minimizing, in the sense of least squares, the difference between the recorded and simulated temperatures. The latter is defined as a solution of a 1D transient heat conduction problem with the already mentioned thermal resistance treated as the only decision variable.

Findings

A general method has been developed, which detects debonding of the FRP tapes from the concrete. The method is rapid and nondestructive. Owing to a special selection of the compared dimensionless measured and simulated temperatures, the method is not sensitive to the surface quality (roughness and emissivity). Measurements and calculation may be executed within seconds. The efficiency of the technique has been shown at a sample, where the defects have been artificially introduced in a controlled manner.

Originality/value

A quantitative assessment procedure which can be used to determine the extent of the debonding has been developed. The procedure uses inverse technique whose result is the unknown thermal resistance between the member and the FRP strip.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present knowledge in estimating yield surfaces of heterogeneous media by use of homogenization, especially where the macroscopic behaviour is driven by weak interfaces between phase constituents.

Design/methodology/approach

A computational homogenization procedure is used to determine the yield surface of a Representative Volume Element (RVE) that contains a fully debonded inclusion embedded within ideally plastic matrix, whereby the interface is modelled by a Coulomb type friction law.

Findings

The macroscopic behaviour of the RVE is shown to coincide an RVE with a hole for expanding loads, whereas for compressive loads, it was shown to approach an RVE with a fully bonded inclusion.

Originality/value

The present paper builds on Gurson’s work in estimating macroscopic yield surfaces of heterogeneous materials. The work is novel in the sense that there had been no previous publications discussing influence of weak interfaces on yield surfaces.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present the results of experimental and theoretical studies on the flexural capacity of reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened using externally bonded bi-directional glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) composites and different end anchorage systems.

Design/methodology/approach

A series of nine RC beams with a length of 1,600 mm and a cross-section of 200 mm depth and 100 mm width were prepared and externally strengthened in flexure with bi-directional GFRP composites. These strengthened beams were anchored with three different end anchorage systems namely closed GFRP wraps, GFRP U-wraps and mechanical anchors. All these beams were tested with four-point bending system up to failure. The experimental results are compared with the theoretical results obtained using the relevant design guidelines.

Findings

The experimental results demonstrate a significant increase in the flexural performance of the GFRP strengthened beams with regard to the ultimate load carrying capacity and stiffness. The results also show that GFRP strengthened beams without end anchorages experienced intermediate concrete debonding failure at the GFRP plate end, whereas all the GFRP strengthened beams with different end anchorage systems failed in rupture of GFRP with concrete crushing. The theoretical results revealed no significant difference among the relevant design guidelines with regard to the predicted ultimate moment capacities of the bi-directional GFRP strengthened RC beams. However, the results show that ACI Committee 440 Report (2008) design recommendation provides reasonably acceptable predictions for the ultimate moment capacities of the tested beams strengthened externally with bi-directional GFRP reinforcement followed by FIB Bulletin 14 (2001) and eventually by JSCE (1997).

Originality/value

The research work presented in this manuscript is authentic and could contribute to the understanding of the overall behaviour of RC beams strengthened with FRP and different end anchorage systems under flexural loading.

Abstract

Debonding, leading to the subsequent detachment of applied finishes to concrete buildings, is becoming a serious problem in many parts of the world. Checking building elevations by employing the technique of Infra‐red Thermography using a process developed by the writer can give advance warning of potential defects. This can enable early remedial action to be undertaken to repair a building surface before it becomes detached from the concrete substrate, possibly resulting in a hazard to passers‐by. The thermographic test method has been compared with other more traditionally used NDT methods including sounding, rebound hammer, and ultrasonic pulse velocity measurements. Although the thermographic equipment is initially more expensive, the surveying method can be shown to be faster and more accurate than any other technique currently available for this type of building evaluation.
