Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this empirical research was to investigate the individual effects of three dimensions of flexible human resource management (HRM) practices – skill flexibility, behavioral flexibility and human practice flexibility on firm performance and to what extent these relationships are strengthened/weakened when there was the moderation of empowering leadership in small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) of the Kingdom of Bahrain.
Design/methodology/approach
The data were collected from chief executive officers (CEOs) through a questionnaire survey method to test the hypothesized relationships. A final dataset of 315 valid responses was utilized for data analysis, and results were analyzed using the Smart partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) technique.
Findings
The findings revealed positive effects of skill flexibility, behavioral flexibility and human practice flexibility on firm performance. The moderating role of empowering leadership further strengthened the effects of employee skill flexibility and employee behavioral flexibility had on firm performance. However, empowering leadership did not pose any moderating effect on human practice flexibility and firm performance relationship.
Research limitations/implications
This paper offers implications for theories on HRM and leadership. It also provides valuable insights for organizations and leaders seeking to boost firm performance across SMEs.

This paper offers implications for theories on HRM and leadership and also contributes in the understanding of the modern managers.
Originality/value
This paper investigated the effects of flexible HRM practices on firm performance and the role of empowering leadership across SMEs in Bahrain. It also explored how the performance of SMEs can be improved using flexible HRM practices followed by the presence of empowering leadership.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to explore the literature of healthcare service quality for identifying and analyzing the healthcare service quality models and dimensions and to present future research insights pertaining to the applications of these models and dimensions.
Design/methodology/approach
A literature review of healthcare service quality has been performed on 59 relevant studies after applying inclusion and exclusion criteria. Google Scholar and Scopus are the primary sources to find the relevant documents. Search was limited to keywords of “service quality,” “healthcare,” “models” and “dimensions.”
Findings
The results revealed that different models and dimensions have been evolved and developed after SERVQUAL in healthcare service quality literature. There is still a need to develop new models, add new contextual dimensions and items in existing models on different aspects of healthcare services. There is also a need to incorporate the perspective of service providers as respondents. Moreover, healthcare service quality models can be devolved or narrowed down at department and individual levels.
Originality/value
This study presents valuable research insights for the researchers and practitioners in ways that healthcare service quality models and dimensions can be developed, modified and tested further in different research contexts and settings. Besides, the literature on healthcare services can be enhanced and enriched.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to examine the determinants of catastrophic household health expenditure in Nigeria, with particular focus on Out-of-Pocket (OOP) health expenditure. Payments for healthcare through OOP are the major means of channeling funds to healthcare providers in many developing countries including Nigeria. It has great consequence on household well-being, especially when it is difficult for household to meet up with spending on other necessity goods.
Design/methodology/approach
The demand for health theory provided the theoretical framework. The study used data from 2018/2019 Nigeria Living Standard Survey (NLSS) with catastrophic thresholds of 10 and 25%. A logistic regression model was used, while Pearson chi-squared test was used for models' goodness of fit.
Findings
Based on the obtained result using Pearson chi-squared, at 10% threshold of total non-food expenditure, the likelihood of experiencing catastrophic health expenditure increased with secondary education, for those without health insurance and for severely ill or injured by 1.48, 2.57 and 8.70, respectively. It fell for those who consulted patent medicine vendors/chemists for illness or injury by 0.63 compared to orthodox practitioners. Enhancement of post-secondary education and widening the coverage of the available social health insurance would minimise the financial burden on many households.
Originality/value
This paper fulfills the need to examine the determinants of catastrophic household health expenditure on two catastrophic thresholds and two forms of household expenditure.

Abstract
Purpose
This study examines the impact of inclusive leadership on two important work outcomes, i.e., employee performance and well-being. In order to better understand the above relationships, this study theorizes that employee psychological capital is a mediating mechanism and family motivation is a moderating mechanism.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors collected 370 responses in three different time waves with an interval of one week. All the constructs of the study were rated by employees except for the supervisor’s family motivation, which was rated by their supervisors. Given the predictive nature of the study, partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was used for data analysis.
Findings
The authors' findings confirm the mediating role of employee psychological capital in the relationship between inclusive leadership and employee performance and in the relationship between inclusive leadership and employee well-being. The moderating effects of supervisor family motivation in the relationship between inclusive leadership and employee performance were also significant; however, the authors did not find empirical support for the moderating effects of family motivation in the relationship between inclusive leadership and employee well-being.
Originality/value
Drawing on the conservation of resources (COR) theory, the present study extends the authors' understanding of the unique ways in which inclusive leadership improves employee performance and benefits their well-being.

Abstract
Purpose
Unsafe behavior accounts for a major part of high accident rates in construction projects. The awareness of unsafe circumstances can help modify unsafe behaviors. To improve awareness in project teams, the present study proposes a framework for predicting safety performance before the implementation of projects.
Design/methodology/approach
The machine learning approach was adopted in this work. The proposed framework consists of two major phases: (1) data collection and (2) model development. The first phase involved several steps, including the identification of safety performance criteria, using a questionnaire to collect data, and converting the data into useful information. The second phase, on the other hand, included the use of the decision tree algorithm coupled with the k-Nearest Neighbors algorithm as the predictive tool along with the proposing modification strategies.
Findings
A total of nine safety performance criteria were identified. The results showed that safety employees, training, rule adherence and management commitment were key criteria for safety performance prediction. It was also found that the decision tree algorithm is capable of predicting safety performance.
Originality/value
The main novelty of the present study is developing an integrated model to propose strategies for the safety enhancement of projects in the case of incorrect predictions.

Purpose
The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of the psychosocial work environment on the turnover of civil service cadre officers in rural areas in Bangladesh.
Design/methodology/approach
Physical intimidation, mental health and well-being, organisational impediments, decision latitude, psychological job demands and social interaction were developed as variables to examine in relation to job satisfaction and turnover. This study gathers 406 responses from Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) cadre officers in rural areas to test the hypotheses.
Findings
The findings indicate that physical intimidation increases employee turnover, whereas psychosocial job demand decreases it. Physical intimidation reduces job satisfaction, whereas decision flexibility and social interaction enhance job satisfaction, hence reducing the turnover of civil service cadre officers in rural Bangladesh.
Originality/value
This research contributes to the creation of context-specific and targeted public sector support, particularly the interventions and policies addressing the work environment in rural areas.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the pioneering work of the 19th-century French author Jean-Gustave Courcelle-Seneuil in developing a scientific perspective on management, whose origin is commonly associated with the contributions of Frederick Taylor and Henri Fayol.
Design/methodology/approach
Through a historical analytical approach and doing a parallel analysis with the origins of the economic theory, fragments of two works by Jean-Gustave Courcelle-Seneuil (1813–1892) are analyzed: The Theoretical and Practical Treatise on Industrial, Commercial and Agricultural Enterprises: A Business Manual (1855) and Ergonomics, the second part of the book Theoretical and Practical Treatise on Political Economy (1858), in which the author devotes a chapter to relevant aspects of management, such as entrepreneurship, production, human resources, finance and accounting.
Findings
In addition to noting the pioneering character of these contributions, particularly the emphasis on entrepreneurship, Courcelle-Seneuil’s argument favors in the 19th century a scientific approach to management, contradicting the belief of businesspeople of the time, according to whom management was something practical, impossible to be studied analytically.
Research limitations/implications
This study indicates that looking to the past is essential to know what has already been produced in a particular field of knowledge. This return to the origins is fundamental to understanding how science evolves. Although management as a systematized field of expertise is usually dated to the beginning of the 20th century, there are reasons to expand on the influences that gave rise to this science, particularly regarding lesser-known but equally important contributions.
Originality/value
This study explores a lesser-known contribution to the origin of management theory and seeks to contribute to the study of the origin of the division of the fields of management science, its roots and its intersection with the economic science practiced in the half of the 19th century.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this research was to investigate how VR-mediated sports, as opposed to 2-D screens, affect the emotional and cognitive experiences of fans with the game and its sponsors.
Design/methodology/approach
The current study employed a single-factorial experimental design, in which participants were randomly assigned to either watch a soccer game through a VR headset or a 2-D screen. Physiological and self-reported measures were used to measure levels of presence, arousal, attention and memory.
Findings
Participants who watched sports through VR experienced a higher level of presence, greater psychophysiological arousal, and exhibited higher levels of attention toward the game. However, they showed lower recognition for in-stadium signage compared to those who watched the game on a 2-D screen.
Practical implications
The results suggest that sports teams can use VR to create a more immersive and engaging experience for fans. Additionally, in-stadium signage advertising may not be as effective in VR sport broadcasting contexts, and sports practitioners may want to explore alternative forms of advertising that are better suited for VR environments.
Originality/value
Methodologically, this study used a combination of self-reported and real-time physiological measures to capture dynamic and spontaneous changes in fans while watching games. Theoretically, this study utilized the Dynamic Human-Centered Communication System Theory to adopt a human-centered approach to understand how VR impacts the experience of sport game viewers.
