Abstract

Aspiring writers are always advised to be persistent in their work, to keep sending rejected manuscripts the rounds of publishers and editors until they are accepted and published. This is easy advice to give if not to follow, but the fact that it is well worth taking in all cases is borne out by the experience of a great many famous writers. The number of well‐known books which were originally refused by the publishers is as surprising as it is interesting. It might be said, in fact, that almost all authors have to endure seeing their books rejected before they achieve print and subsequent success.

Abstract

This paper proposes a revised analytical model for accounting professionals that can be used to evaluate the financial well being of innovative companies that rely on earnings management practices (EM) for their growth. Through an analysis of corporate governance, financial reporting standards, and ratio analysis this paper reaches the conclusion that Enron extended previously researched earnings management practices that could have been detected in early 2000. Results of the analysis indicate that by using price book, price earnings multiple, net margin percentage, and return on assets, and taking into consideration the so‐called risk management activities which seemed to disguise highly volatile speculative derivative‐based activities, Enron was headed for implosion at least one year before its collapse.

Abstract

Traces the history of the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA), which requires US lenders to meet the credit needs of their local customers, and presents a study of its effect on profitability. Looks at financial institutions which received revized CRA ratings between 1990 and 1995, analysing their characteristics before and after revision, and finds upgraded banks hold more loans and are likely to be either rapidly growing and/or reaching deeper into the pool of applicants. Goes on to show that interest on CRA‐related loans is lower than on others, i.e. profitability is reduced and risk increased. Concludes that although CRA activities may open new markets and build new skills for lenders, their costs are likely to exceed their benefits for most institutions.

Abstract

There is certainly an awareness in this country of the need for training in the retail sector. However, this is directed principally at the needs of the larger retailer (cf the articles on training in our May/June issue). David Kirby suggests that little attention is being given to the training needs of the small independent. In this article he outlines a training and advisory programme for village shopkeepers which took place in mid‐Wales, a programme funded in part by the EEC in response to the decline of the village shop in that area.
