With the rise of the generalist manager, and the demise of the productivity specialist, there has been a decline in the use of “standard” productivity tools and a move towards the application of “management systems”. This paper argues that the range of available productivity tools means that there is almost certainly a tool available for every productivity improvement situation. However, the paper points out that the deployment of such tools must be within a structured framework that manages the overall change process implicit in productivity improvement.

In the USA a nationwide grid of metropolitan areas with populations beyond the million mark has emerged. The strength of the national economy appears to be exhibited through those large agglomerations and the linkages that they have developed amongst themselves, other components of the national economy and in some instances elements external to that economy. Metropolitan areas in the size class referred to, and some not quite so large, are expanding their boundaries or spheres of influence in ways that signal changes for the urban areas in question and indeed for the national economy. The current discussion reviews and synthesizes recent thinking concerning urban peripheries and adjacent areas with an eye to understanding their role in a changing economic infrastructure. In keeping with advances in transportation and communications and the emergence of service industries, developments on the metropolitan peripheries are assisting with the ongoing functional linkages of their metropolitan hosts to the national economy and beyond, and thus are contributing to their continuing viability.

The article attempts to reassess the world economy with an eye to understanding what is automatic about it and thus beyond the control of national economies. Towards that end, Schumpeterian analysis is applied in an effort to illustrate how changes occur and how such changes affect discrete units or subsets of international capitalism. The discussion suggests that firms with leadership roles in national economies may bring those economies down with them if they lose their position in the world economy. It also suggests that the international economy may provide firms with a more flexible climate which in turn may prolong their effective lives. The major policy implication for governments is that such institutions may no longer have it within their preserves to control economic activities spawned in the international arena.

A framework for evaluating public opinion towards franchising is proposed and empirically tested in an emerging market, India. Franchising in an emerging market was selected as the context because – (1) future growth is likely to come from newly emerging markets, (2) franchising is primarily seen as a foreign concept in emerging markets and has attracted its fair share of attention, both positive and negative. The results indicate that people evaluate franchising using four key factors – well being of small businesses, socio‐economic, socio‐cultural well being, and employment opportunity. This study further investigates the relationship between these factors and patronage behaviour. Some of these factors were associated with patronage behaviour and the associated residual feeling. Clearly, in order to succeed in emerging and developing markets, the franchising industry must pay heed to public opinion.
