Abstract

Purpose

Research on the significance of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and value creation is nascent as compared to CSR and financial performance. The concept of value is also evolving because of changing business environments, globalization and the expanded idea of CSR. Nowadays, managers expect a more quick, pragmatic approach to satisfy valid stakeholder claims while simultaneously creating competitive advantage through reputation and investor value. The paper aims to examine the impact of CSR on the market and sustainable value creation through CSR expenditure in India and the moderating role of pressure-sensitive institutional investors (PSII).

Design/methodology/approach

The study used panel data regression methodology on a sample of 1,845 non-financial Indian firms from 2015 to 2021.

Findings

CSR creates market and sustainable value for non-financial Indian firms in line with stakeholder theory. The authors find a positive moderating role of governance represented by PSII on CSR and market value creation but not on sustainable value.

Research limitations/implications

The study is based on secondary data. CSR, despite being a regulatory obligation, provided long-term benefits that increased their sustainable growth rate. The results highlight the importance given by financial markets to CSR activities. Other types of institutional investors can also be examined in future research. CSR can be embedded in the core operations of the firm, which can help in fostering a culture of sustainability and responsible business practices that benefit firms and society as a whole. Tax incentives can be provided to firms investing in CSR.

Practical implications

CSR provides long-term benefits to the firm, which enhances the goodwill and integrity of the firm in the market. The results reveal that besides capital market investors, firms are subject to the scrutiny of consumers, communities and the government as expectations rise and information spreads faster, which can have repercussions. CSR helps in meeting such expectations and the perceived value of the firms. Managers and chief executive officers (CEOs) can pay attention to the type of institutional investors like PSII, which can be formed as a part of the firm’s CSR strategy.

Social implications

The positive impact of CSR on sustainable value expresses a long-term management orientation based on the improvement of stakeholder relations and the associated environmental impacts referring to cohesion and consensus, market opportunities and strengthened reputation and image. A sustainable company involves a conscious and continuing effort in the equilibrium between contrasting stakeholders’ expectations in an attempt to optimize value creation. Tax exemption can be provided for CSR activities.

Originality/value

The authors contribute to the scant literature on CSR and value creation, especially sustainable value, as most of the prior studies are not empirical on sustainable value in the Indian context. Managers and CEOs can pay attention to the types of institutional investors like PSII, which can be formed as a part of the firm’s strategy.

Abstract

Purpose

Structural mentoring barriers are policies, practices and cultural norms that collectively disadvantage marginalized groups and perpetuate disparities in mentoring. This study aims to better understand structural mentoring barriers at the postdoctoral training stage, which has a direct impact on faculty diversity and national efforts to retain underrepresented groups in research careers.

Design/methodology/approach

A diverse sample of postdoctoral scholars (“postdocs”) from across the USA were asked to participate in focus groups to discuss their training experiences. The authors conducted five 90-min focus groups with 32 biomedical postdocs, including 20 (63%) women and 15 (47%) individuals from underrepresented racial/ethnic groups (URG).

Findings

A social-ecological framework was used to categorize both the upstream and downstream manifestations of structural mentoring barriers, as well as mentoring barriers, overall. Notable structural barriers included: academic politics and scientific hierarchy; inequalities resulting from mentor prestige; the (over) reliance on one mentor; the lack of formal training for academic and non-academic careers; and the lack of institutional diversity and institutional mentor training. To overcome these barriers, postdocs strongly encouraged developing a network or team of mentors and recommended institutional interventions that create more comprehensive professional development, mentorship and belonging.

Originality/value

For postdoctoral scientists, structural mentoring barriers can permeate down to institutional, interpersonal and individual levels, impeding a successful transition to an independent research career. This work provides strong evidence for promoting mentorship networks and cultivating a “mentoring milieu” that fosters a supportive community and a strong culture of mentorship at all levels.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to assess the relationships between cultural travel motivation, two dimensions of authenticity and satisfaction of domestic tourists visiting Sirince in Turkey. Given the structure of the model, authenticity is two latent variables, indirectly affecting satisfaction.

Design/methodology/approach

The research takes a predictive and explanatory approach rather than theory confirmation. Partial least squares (PLS) algorithm was used to assess the multiple mediation. The data were collected from 391 domestic visitors through a self-administered questionnaire.

Findings

The research highlights that two dimensions of authenticity have a statistically mediating influences on the relationship between cultural travel motivation and satisfaction. Furthermore, while cultural travel motivation is the most important predictor of satisfaction, object-based authenticity has emerged as an antecedent variable that deserves to be given the highest importance. Finally, first time visitors and repeaters did not differ across all relationships in the model.

Research limitations/implications

The fact that the data were collected only from Sirince can be considered as geographical limitations of the study. Another limitation is that due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the data were obtained only from domestic tourists visiting Sirince.

Practical implications

The study on the multiple mediating roles of authenticity in the relationship between motivation factor alongside satisfaction revealed a variety of application opportunities, particularly for destinations attempting to position themselves as authentic. Accordingly, authenticity concept gains significance in tourism industry more often because unique experiences at the visited destinations can satisfy the individuals in search of their self-identity.

Social implications

Furthermore, transformation of authentic places into tourism destinations develops cultural values in line with expectations of tourists. However, this transforms domestic cultural factors into commercial products by eroding their significance in the eye of local residents. This invites artificiality by drifting apart from originality of cultural elements. Each element serves as part of authenticity is indeed away from authentic experience even though it is regarded as an authentic experience from tourists’ perspective because it diverts from its reality. Establishing balance between tourists’ travel motivations and their expectation from authentic destination is substantially important to satisfy their sensational and sentimental expectations. In addition to the ones mentioned above, managers should take an active role in promotion and focus on sponsorship activities to highlight the authenticity of Sirince; begin reconstruction works by considering the original architecture specific to the region; and pay attention to the compatibility of the new architectural texture with the destination character. As stated in the study of Genc and Gulertekin Genc (2021), special attention should be paid to the harmony between the architectural texture and the destination feature. Finally, considering that authenticity has a mediating role between cultural travel motivation and satisfaction, authentic values should be highlighted in promotional videos.

Originality/value

There has been very little research into the role of the dimensions of authenticity in mediating the relationship between cultural motivation and satisfaction. Unlike previous studies on authenticity and tourism, this research attempted to examine the relationship between cultural travel motivation and satisfaction by involving two dimensions of authenticity into the model.

Abstract

Purpose

Building on resource dependence theory and the dynamic institution-based view, this paper examines the influence of government affiliations on firm product innovation in a dynamic institutional environment.

Design/methodology/approach

Using unique panel data of Chinese manufacturing firms covering a period of 12 years (1998–2009) with 2,564,547 firm-year observations, this study chooses the panel Tobit model with random effects to explore the influence of government affiliations on firm product innovation, followed by an analysis to test the moderation effects of dynamic institutional environments.

Findings

The study findings suggest that Chinese firms with higher-level government affiliations have a relatively high product innovation performance. It finds that this innovation stimulating effect is contingent on the dynamic nature of the institutional environment. To be specific, a high speed of institutional transition may depress the positive innovation effects of government affiliations, while a more synchronized transition speed of institutional components may enhance the positive innovation effects of firms' government affiliations.

Originality/value

This study adds to a better understanding of the drivers of product innovation in Chinese firms that are situated in environments that are characterized by institutional change, using and contributing to resource dependence theory and the dynamic institution-based view.
