Relying on complex interdependencies between shoppers, retailers and owners, shopping centres are ideal for knowledge at management study. Retailers have been the forefront of data mining, but shopping centres have received little attention. Aspects of customer knowledge management for shopping centres are considered using analogies drawn from an exploratory questionnaire survey.

The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the prevention of the abuse of older people in residential and nursing homes, through the identification of “early indicators of concern”. Such indicators support practitioners in identifying services in which older people are at risk of abuse, neglect and ill treatment.

Semi-structured interviews were conducted with health and social care practitioners in two local authorities (in England and Scotland), who had visited services in which abuse or neglect had occurred. Practitioners were asked about the things that they had seen within the service which had caused them to become concerned.

Over 90 early indicators of concern were identified. These indicators were grouped within six themes which identify key manifestations of service cultures which may promote the abuse of older people.

Information and guidance has been developed to enable practitioners to recognise early indicators and identify services in which older people are at risk and in which actions are required to help prevent the onset of abuse.

A range of studies have highlighted the importance of organisational cultures in promoting the abuse of older people. The early indicators identified through this research represent visible signs of such poor service cultures which can be observed by practitioners, enabling them to recognise services in which older people are at greater risk.

It has taken a very long time in Britain for us to acknowledge the seriousness of youth unemployment. It is now nearly a decade since there were clear signs of its scale and structural significance. Yet there are still influential people blandly demanding “real jobs at real wages”, as if by some well‐meaning magic the problem could be wished away. Those who drew attention to the problem in the seventies were routinely criticized from left and from right alike as hysterical pessimists. From the right we were told that recession would fade and that economic recovery would absorb young people in an expanding labour market. On the left it was widely believed, and the belief absurdly persists, that under a sensible government the problem would be easily dealt with by a further straightforward extension of conventional education.

The purpose of this paper is to explore the importance and nature of relationships of trust in care settings. The paper addresses the central question of what is it about these kinds of relationships that is associated with harm and abuse?

The paper takes a discursive approach, based, implicitly, on an ecological framework of analysis.

The conclusion is that the relationships between staff and service users in residential care settings are characterised by non-mutual dependency, isolation and unequal decision-making powers. Therefore such relationships deserve special focus and attention in order to safeguard and protect the people concerned.

The paper implies that practitioners and policy makers should find ways to ensure that they listen more closely to people living in residential settings. Practitioners should ask more about the quality of relationships that people enjoy with the staff that support them.

The paper suggests that in order to safeguard people more effectively, practitioners and policy makers should reconsider the central focus of their energies and revisit issues such as isolation, in the lives of disabled and older people living in residential care.

The significance of truancy ‐ This chapter discusses truancy from school as a focusing device for analysing the consequences, educational, social and economic of the nationalisation of the education system. In the opening sections, an attempt is made to define truancy and to indicate the scale of the problem. In sections 5 and 6, an explanation of truancy is advanced in terms of the effects that a nationalised education industry has on curricular and economic decision‐making. In section 7, the problem of truancy is analysed on a comparative basis drawing on differences between education in liberal society and education in collectivist society. Finally, tentative suggestions are advanced with a view to the partial denationalisation of the education industry.

This study investigated the relationship between job satisfaction, job‐related stress and intention to leave among audit staff in public accounting firms. Effects of demographic factors on job satisfaction; and the relationship between the elements of two‐factor theory with job satisfaction and job‐related stress were also identified. Data for the study was collected through questionnaires. Statistical analysis such as chi‐square test, factor analysis, correlation analysis and multiple regressions were used. The results indicated that job satisfaction and job‐related stress were significantly related to intention to leave the job. Only demographic factors such as pay or salary, job position and highest education achieved were found to have effect on job satisfaction. Elements of motivators and elements of hygiene were related to job satisfaction and jobrelated stress respectively. The findings of this study may contribute to planning and implementing human resource management’s (HRM) retention strategies. Several suggestions for future research are also presented. If the antecedents of intention to leave can be identified, appropriate HRM practices may minimize dysfunctional turnover of high quality employees.

Government appointed and sponsored committees of every description—select, ad hoc, advisory, inquiry—such a prominent feature of the public scene since the last War, are understandable, even acceptable, reflect the urgency of the times in which we live. In the gathering gloom of more recent twilight years, they have flourished inordinately, especially in the socio‐political field, where most of their researches have been conducted. Usually embellished with the name of the figure‐head chairman, almost always expensively financed, they have one thing in common—an enormous output of words, telling us much of what we already know. So much of it seems dull, meaningless jargon, reflecting attitudes rather than sound, general principles.

Television became a possible medium for advertising in the late 1930s but its emergence as a major medium dates from 1947. Arguments about the likely effectiveness of television as a source of entertainment attracting large numbers of viewers were coloured by fears of responses to ill‐devised uses by advertisers of the presentation of products or services. The profitability of television selling was forshadowed in 1947.
