Discusses team‐building initiatives undertaken in an operational sphere which aimed both to enhance the awareness of individuals of their own psychological profile and their impact on others, and to develop them in an organizational milieu by examining their motivational factors in the context of role clarification, personal responsibility and team performance. Two management consultants were used, operating in different but congruous areas, supporting the senior managers on a corporate venture progressing the principles of the total quality management concept. The commitment was successful in terms of individual growth, greater team cohesiveness and operational achievement.

Today an estimated 500,000 personal computers have been purchased by Americans who use them at home and in a variety of small business applications. (Note: We define a personal computer as a small, relatively inexpensive, microprocessor‐based device which can be taken out of its box, plugged in and begin working immediately, as opposed to large computers which must be permanently installed, and/or require professional programming. We exclude microprocessor‐based devices whose only function is limited to the playback of packaged games.) Many market research services believe that personal computer sales will continue to grow rapidly, perhaps as fast as a 50 percent annual growth rate for the next several years. The impact of this new interactive information technology coming into the possession of perhaps millions of people can only be guessed at at this early juncture. To us, as librarians, one of the more perceivable results of the growing wave of interest in personal computers has been the proliferation of literature addressed to the personal computer user.

The following bibliography focuses mainly on programs which can run on IBM microcomputers and compatibles under the operating system PC DOS/MS DOS, and which can be used in online information and documentation work. They fall into the following categories:

Microcomputers are rapidly becoming commonplace in libraries today and will become even more so as prices fall and capabilities increase. Microcomputers can provide a wide range of services, from being an integral part of a circulation system to serving as terminals to access online databases and information utilities such as the Source or CompuServe. Software can be purchased or developed to assist in online literature searching (record keeping or standardization of database commands). Database packages, or even word processing programs, can be used to help compile local newspaper indexes or other local information files. Statistical packages can be used to analyze library usage. Even the laborious task of writing reports or letters can be greatly aided by word processing programs. Even though the availability of software is a determining factor in choosing a microcomputer, this paper will concentrate on meeting the hardware needs of individual libraries.

It's been three years since my previous survey in RSR. Superb reference books in pop music have been appearing so frequently that I've been having trouble keeping up. Let's hope “next year's” survey will only be 12 months in the making and not 36.

Global competition and advances in technology have enhanced the growing trend of virtual teams in order to execute business strategies. Thus, understanding the competencies needed for virtual leadership effectiveness is essential and vital to organisational success. The purpose of this paper is to identify and analyse the required competencies for virtual team leadership and its effectiveness in an organisation.

The study adopted case study methodology to undertake an exploratory study of a manufacturing organisation. Using a questionnaire that was designed following a focussed literature review to identify the specific virtual leadership competencies, structured interviews were conducted face-to-face with 14 respondents from two major virtual team groups. The interviews were designed to elucidate the opinions and perceptions of virtual team members with respect to selected characteristics of their virtual team leaders (VTLs). The responses obtained were analysed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis.

The study identified the competencies required for effective leadership in virtual teams in order to achieve the organisational project success. The performance of the two VTLs in the organisation was then assessed in the light of these identified competencies. The study also identified transformational leaders as important to be considered when selecting VTLs because they are known to achieve high-performing team. However, the study found that considering the virtual leadership competencies, the two VTLs were found to have not, on the whole, performed well because they are lacking in some of the leadership competencies required for effective leadership in a virtual team and this has led to their organisation not achieving the required success in virtual teams.

The study has implications for organisations’ virtual team project leaders. The identification of specific leadership competencies for virtual team leadership will enable organisations to be more informed when looking for effective leaders in their virtual teams in order to achieve high-performing virtual teams, which will lead to organisational growth and success. The study is expected to enhance the success rate of any typical organisation using virtual teams.

The study would be highly beneficial to both the potential and current stakeholder organisations considering virtual teams to execute business strategies. This study has also added to the body of knowledge by further exploring the leadership competencies needed for virtual teams.

Readmission to hospital can be distressing, costly for the National Health Service (NHS) and legally it should be a last resort as it entails restriction of liberty. This study aims to develop an understanding of factors leading to readmission for a cohort of service users under the care of a community forensic mental health team (CFMHT) in England to consider how support could be improved to reduce incidence of future readmissions.

Thematic analysis was used to examine case recording relating to 13 service users who were readmitted to hospital within a specified time period. The same service users were invited to complete questionnaires regarding their views of what contributed to the readmission to cross-reference with themes identified.

The analysis of case notes produced eight sub-themes. These were sorted into three overarching themes, illustrating the challenges that service users face upon discharge from hospital, the sense they make of these challenges and the impact upon relational patterns, in particular with the CFMHT. Researchers highlight that the multiple challenges can increase service users’ sense of being under threat which can lead to distrust of professionals.

Practical suggestions arising from the study were fed back to the subject team and are listed at the end of the paper.

Findings from this study parallel those previously reported. This study contributes an inter-relational aspect of the factors and the central role of meaning-making in the path of recovery and building a life in the community.
